The Park has several old dead trees, which continue to serve the ecosystem as perches, feeding places, and nesting areas. They are also favorite photo subjects. Brazos Bend State Park in SE Texas. 1/2020
When the sun looks like the moon. Foggy November morning at Brazos Bend State Park in SE Texas - 11/2022.
I got an early start (completely dark out) and enjoyed daybreak while I waited for enough light to even think about using a telephoto lens. Taken the morning of October 4, 2015 at Brazos Bend State Park in SE Texas
The large alligator posed for the picture, but where is the photographer? As a member of PETA , the alligator thought he recognized a distant cousin on the bag.

It's my two year flickrversary tomorrow. This was my first flickr photo back in 2005...only slightly reworked so not to repost the same photo. Thanks to everyone for making it a great two years!
It's a treat to have these birds nesting in the Park this spring.

I guess they partied too long the night before as most of them were sleeping. My first capture of this species and my apologies for their heads being on backward. I’ll try to do better the next time.
Fulvous Whistling Duck at rest just north of 40 Acre Lake at Brazos Bend State Park.
Also want to add a bit of a disclaimer about the blue water. That blue water that you see is merely a reflection of the sky off of some water that is DEFINITELY not clear. This area is not too far from Houston but has experienced a severe drought for the past few years and there was almost no water last year. A bit more water this year but still about 4 to 5 feet low. Let’s hope that it recovers soon.

This bird gave me a few nice sessions in June before the hurricane closed the park. Hopefully I will be able to get back into the park in a few weeks. Brazos Bend State Park in SE Texas - 6/2024
I saw a ton of green herons during my last outing. It's definitely summer in SE
Texas. Brazos Bend State. 6/2017
I've found this bird hunting the same general area during morning park visits for the past 3-4 month. Last week, I found the bird in pretty light, and quite close. I made some tight portraits with my longest lens, but in closeup, the branches are very distracting (at least to me). I do kind of like this wider view, despite the bg. I was out hiking around Brazos Bend State Park when I happened on this scene. It appears that this alligator is checking out the restaurant menu before brunch haha You can see the ducks watching him warily. Nature at it's best : )
Dawn is my favorite time of day, with dusk coming in a close second. This image was made this morning at Brazos Bend State Park in SE Texas. I think the single bright point is Venus.
We made a reconnaissance trip to Brazos Bend yesterday to look for nesting owls, hawks, grebes etc. Conditions weren't what I like for bird photography, but the white sky was just what I needed for this image. I shot this in color, fully intending to convert to B&W. Brazos Bend State Park in SE Texas 1-2020
