Ruins of a classic bastle house, unique to the border region and Northumberland
A bastle house was a fortified farmhouse built to defend the family and their animals from raids by the reivers.
It is simple in design. The ground floor was for the animals and the first floor for people. There would typically be no latrines and just a fireplace at one end. Access to the first floor was usually through a ladder and trapdoor within the byre below. Bastle houses were often built within sight of each other, basically to help provide early warning of raids.
Its name of Nine Dargue signifies the amount of land that could be tilled in nine days,
The second annual Border Convergence, organized by the School of the Americas Watch, was held in Nogales, AZ, and Nogales, Sonora, on Nov. 10-12. A vigil was held Friday night outside the for-profit federal detention center near Eloy, AZ. On Saturday, there was a procession to "The Wall" in Nogales, with participants on both side of the barrier. Same on Sunday, with a mass of remembrance for the dead and a puppet show on the AZ side. On 4 February, Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao inaugurated the first Integrated Border Post (IBP) at Batugade, Bobonaro District. President Ramos-Horta, Minister of Finance Pires, Minister for Tourism and Industry Alves, the Indonesian Ambassador to Timor-Leste, and UNMIT SRSG Haq and UN Police Commissioner Carrilho attended, amongst others. The facility supports the legitimate cross border movement of people and goods for tourism, commercial and community links. The IBP consists of several border control agencies, including immigration, customs, quarantine, border police, agriculture, foreign affairs and transport.
