Troubling Borders | Southeast Asian Women in the Diaspora

June 30 - October 07, 2012

Closing Reception & Readings: October 6, 6:00 PM - 9:00 PM

Closing Conference: October 7, 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM

Southeast Asian Women in the Diaspora: Troubling Borders in Literature and Art is an exhibition and conference featuring the writings and artwork of Southeast Asian women in the diaspora, highlighting women of Cambodian, Laotian, Filipino and Vietnamese descent and by women who identify as the often stateless Mien, Hmong, and Cham. In the aftermath of the cold war, many of these women now reside in the United States, Canada, Europe, Australia, and other parts of the world. As an incredibly diverse group, their voices make visible the ruptures caused by colonization, war, globalization, and militarization.

3-Day Montreal, Quebec Tour from New YorkTour Code: 172-2397

August 22nd 23rd and 24th 2014

About this day of the trip:

New York - Montreal (373 miles)

In the morning passengers will be picked up from New York City and New Jersey. Today, we will drive north of the border to the capital of French Canada, Montreal, QC. Here, we will visit the Olympic Stadium and Tower, Mount Royal, and St. Josephs Oratory before checking into the hotel for the night.

Montreal, QC Montreal, Quebec is the second-largest city in Canada, and the center of French Canadian culture. Called "Canada's Cultural Capital," Montreal offers much to see and do, whether you are looking to explore history or the arts.

Olympic Stadium and Tower The Olympic Stadium in Montreal, also called "The Big O" partially in reference to its donut-like shape, was originally to be constructed for the 1976 Summer Olympics. Tourists can visit one of three observation decks in the leaning tower.

Mount Royal This hill in Montreal, Quebec is the namesake of the entire city and an important cultural, environmental, and historical landmark. The top of the so-called mountain is Mount Royal Park, one of the area's largest forested areas.

St. Josephs Oratory The current 10,000-person structure was built in 1917, and it has been Canada's largest church ever since. The basilica is also considered a national shrine, a title which signifies a place of special religious, cultural, and historical importance.

This was taken during Charlie's "photo shoot" for the shot that landed on the local buses. This is my personal favorite because he looks so dang happy!

The sign for Border Jerk. They had awesome jerk chicken. They also had some jerk pork, we should have tried that too.

Sometimes I start drawing around the edge of a space and decorate it with flowers and leaves and vines and flourishes. I love to do it. It feels nice. It brings me joy.

Just with the last bit of day light, we drove into Nepalganj Road. The last train into Nepalganj road was over an hour away and we walked to the end of railway and across the geographical border between India and Nepal. Pic by Raghu Jayaraman

NOTES -

Patricia Meadows, art curator, is supervising the closing of "Borders" exhibit by artist Steinunn Thorarinsdottir. Coincidentally, my daughter has a Meadows Art Fellowship to attend graduate school at Southern Methodist University. Dallas, Texas.

this branch of Borders is no longer ;-( (you can see why from the number of customers on a weekend afternoon)

This is my cousin at the ocean in SOUTHERN California. Those sticks coming out of the water create the border between the US and Mexico. It was so weird to see everything on this trip. This is from my youth group's mission trip to Tijuana this last summer.
