A monochrome version of the southbound Cumbrian Mountain Express on 18th February 2012, departing from Carlisle and approaching London Road Junction. Stanier Black 5s 44932 and 45305 leave a smoke screen over the southern suburbs of the Border City, somehow adding to the period, if not downright scruffy, industrial feel of the area. I have digitally removed a modern speed restriction sign which does not add anything to the image. The charter was thoughtfully renamed as the 'George Hinchcliffe Special' and fittingly carried a headboard in his memory.

The highest point of the road up Widdale also forms the old border between the erstwhile Ridings of Yorkshire. This ceased to be the border after the reorganisation in 1974 but still is a parish boundary.

This was as far as we were allowed, the western shore of river Thanlyin. About 30km further east is the border to Thailand. The land east of the river is not controlled by the government, but by armed Kayah parties. Their income has partly been smuggling of timber, and much if not all of their forest is today destroyed.
