If you'd like to see these and around 100 species of butterfly in some of the most beautiful and wildlife rich areas of Greece, why not join us there next June for our Balkan Butterflies tour? 10% of profits from this tour will be donated to Butterfly Conservation. I'll be leading it and can promise you the week will be a naturalist and photographers dream. As well as the butterflies we'll also see numerous dragonflies, birds, reptiles and plants. Plus, we're dropping in to see Delphi, the ancient site of the Oracle.

UNEMPLOYMENT DAY ONE II
sunny but cold. it is
March first. I walk two blocks for break-
fast. on the corner of Grand and Damen
a young black guy calls me sir. he is confused
and bewildered. can I help him find the
parole office. it is cold
and he is insufficiently dressed. there
is a desperation about him. go over to the
currency exchange
I suggest. they may be able to help you
find the parole office. I show him
where the currency exchange is and then
I say good luck and continue
walking to the restaurant. the young guy
does not move. he stands on
the corner. he seems very confused
and lost. in the restaurant
I order coffee and pancakes. the news-
paper is about the same: war
and the threat of war. some guy
is arrested for soliciting kids
on the internet. a columnist advises me
how to invest money I don't have. the wait-
ress has an eastern European accent
and is friendly. would I like another cup
of coffee? yes. she pours it
and I begin to drink it. ideas for poems
crowd out more mundane thoughts
like where to get another job.
the paroled guy is not on the corner
when I walk back to the house. his predicament
becomes inspiration for a poem. sometimes
I am shameless in the act of poetry. no regrets.
never look back. I am amused
by my own histrionics. a poem begins
to birth itself inside of my head. this time
however I cannot fathom an ending
for the poem. all hands on deck.
man overboard. so much
for craft and the ever-present
ironic closure.

For years, my writers' group has met every other week at Borders, but tonight we had our last meeting there. Borders has filed for bankruptcy and is closing 200 stores. This is one of them.
If I thought this came as a sad surprise to me, it's got nothing on how the announcement affected the nice lady who makes my mocha every other week...that is, who made it.
My group can find another place to meet. I only hope she can find a job as easily. :(
