The border checkpoint Alpha near Helmstedt was the largest and most important border crossing on the Inner German border during the division of Germany. Due to its geographical location, the shortest land route between West Germany and West Berlin, most transit traffic to and from West Berlin was handled by this crossing. Most travel routes from West Germany to East Germany and Poland also used this crossing. The border crossing existed from 1945 to 1990
ITV Border's Sandy McCracken arrived at the cottage with cameraman Paul yesterday to film a short piece for the ITV programme "Border Life". The sun shone brightly and the Cruck Cottage looked fantastic following the recent repairs carried out to the thatched roof and having been freshly lime washed by our army of community volunteers.
Once again local residents came along to help us make this another "special" occasion, becoming the audience for the day. Interviews were given by Michael, Willie and Bill Lawson providing an insight into the Cruck Cottages past, present and future - they were excellent.
Our thanks to all those who once again gave their time to help us - it is, as always, greatly appreciated!
Very low light and long exposures were used for this series. A collection of 20 bottles, 16 pieces of fabric and a sheet of glass were used in this set-up. Low light the back and side (windows) were enhanced by a fill light aimed into the next room on the right. The borders were created with "seamless workshop" from www.redfieldplugins.com.

This rainbow greets weary travelers as they cross into China from Mongolia. Unfortunately this was the only photograph I was able to take at the time. I was suddenly gripped by a fever and it required a great deal of effort to be in a standing position. Unfortunately for me, we were forced to disembark at the Chinese border town to go through passport control. While in line everything went dark in front of my eyes and I barely managed to drop my backpack and other baggage before collapsing in line. Lucky for me I was helped by a Frenchman I met in Mongolia. He held me up until they stamped my passport and stayed with me until I got better. Surprisingly they did not quarantine me, although I was the only person on the entire train with an American passport.

Broughton was on the Symington to Peebles branch of the Caledonian Railway. It was the junction for the short lived Talla reservoir branch. The station closed to passengers on 5 June 1950 but it remained open for goods. The line to the west closed to Peebles on 7th June 1954 but the station remained open to serve the abattoir until 4th April 1966 when the line to Symington closed completely. The company who own the station site have erected a semaphore signal to remind of its former use.

Specially selected passengers have taken a trip on the Borders to Edinburgh railway a day ahead of the opening of the new Scottish Borders rail line to the general public.
The owners of a Golden Ticket traveled on three trains leaving Tweedbank, Galashiels and Stow, each carrying 160 passengers.
Others making the trip were nominated by the public or won competitions.
The 30 miles of new track between Tweedbank in the Borders and Edinburgh opens to the public on Sunday.

On September 9, 2010, Congresswoman Giffords met with National Guard troops who have volunteered to patrol the Arizona-Mexico border.
Giffords, who long has called for the deployment of Guard troops to Arizona, visited with soldiers training in Tucson and then saw them fulfill their mission on the border in Nogales. She was the first elected official from Arizona to meet with the newly deployed troops.
During her visit, she met with the assistant adjutant general-air of the Arizona National Guard and several hundred Guardsmen who are being trained at a Tucson facility for their border security mission, which is named Operation Copper Cactus.
If you're a good observer, you might notice something in his eyes. This guy had plans, big plans. And I didn't like them.
As it turned out, he decided that this particular monday was perfect to make an owner's life miserable. During the first 30 minutes of our daily walk he chased down three bicycles and a dozen or so dogs.
But I had my revenge: he spent the rest of the walk on the leash. He hated it. He hated every second of it. Watching other dogs play, run and swim, it was pure hell. Being a Border Collie, he understood perfectly why he lost his freedom. The rest of the day he behaved like never before.
Armed with a fleet of Ford F-150 SVT Raptors, two rough and ready rigs that can go over anything, and a Dodge Power Wagon as the leader, they will see to it that nothing illegal happens across or near the border.

Southeast Asian Women in the Diaspora: Troubling Borders in Literature and Art is an exhibition and conference featuring the writings and artwork of Southeast Asian women in the diaspora, highlighting women of Cambodian, Laotian, Filipino and Vietnamese descent and by women who identify as the often stateless Mien, Hmong, and Cham. In the aftermath of the cold war, many of these women now reside in the United States, Canada, Europe, Australia, and other parts of the world. As an incredibly diverse group, their voices make visible the ruptures caused by colonization, war, globalization, and militarization.
