Off to London on Monday to work with LAS at the Olympics. I'll be crewed up with a LAS guy/gal and will be working in various venues at the trackside so look out for me!!
So it was last ride out with Jill on Tiger today. Down into town to have a look at Tramlines Music festival (www.tramlines.org.uk/) then a nice blast around the Peak District and home again.. Shame I can't take Jill & Tiger with me..!...
Ok, I know that a bit of flesh is on show here but this is about as risky as I’m going to get with the challenges/requests I am set!!!!
Also, I’m posting this as my week 2 because as from next week I will be back at work and won’t have much time. I suspect the usual ‘snap-shot’ type photo will be making a regular appearance for my SP project. (I am getting my excuses in now) ;-)

Monday 2nd
A bit of housework while Roger looked at his emails. Then we set off to look around the medieval village. It had many ancient buildings, some showing their timber frame but many plastered over. The museum was the oldest and very beautiful in a Tuscan style though parts dated back to 1100's. We sat in the square and had a very good pizza and beer. Photographic town with a lot of restoration going on but seemingly untouched by tourism. Certainly there were not the tourist shops, bars and restaurants you might expect. However we did meet a few English who had found it!
After lunch we shopped in the local supermarket and then drove 14 km to Penne. What a pleasant surprise this was! First sightings were of the medieval castle ruins which were perched high on the tip of a rocky pinnacle. We climbed through the undeveloped village and paid our €5 to go up to the castle. It was very hot but not too onerous a climb. The size of it was a surprise and you had no idea that you were perched on a pinnacle apart from the 360º views. There were some signs of restoration, or maybe just stabilisation, but nothing very serious. A beautiful drive back along the Gorges d' Aveyron and a good rest when we returned. After supper we wandered along the road alongside the river for about a km.
Bit of a clunky technology that's on the way out, but it has its uses. We tend to use them for booking media and signing NDA's. They can come in handy during postal strikes too.

The entrance to the Tamar Manure Navigation - a short canal which enabled vessels to bypass the weir at Weir Head.
Entrance lock at the southern entrance to the Tamar Manure Navigation; remains of entrance lock at the northern end. Dated PR 1798, although said to have been built in 1808. Granite ashlar walls to the lock, with one pair of wooden lock gates with iron winding gear for the sluices.
Plan: The lock basin is about 25 metres long, with the gated at the southern end ; at the northern end of the canal, granite ashlar walls remain. The granite ashlar walls are splayed back at each end of the lock basin ; the lock gates are partially collapsed. Granite mooring post at south end. Iron winding gear remaining for sluices. At the northern end of the canal, the granite ashlar walls
remain, no gates.
The canal was built for the Tamar Coal Manure and General Mercantile Company; diverted and shortened by the Duke of Bedford in early C20. The canal continued to be used to supply coal to Gunnislake Gas Works until 1914. The Company was liquidated in 1942.

Looking every bit the new kid on the block on its newly-laid section of concrete sleeper track class 484 EMU 484 004 approaches the southern extremity of the Island Line route network at Shanklin. Although the single-line track is newly laid and packed with the mainland-style grey ballast there is still lots of the former rounded shingle as previously used for track ballast to be seen here and there along the Island Line's route.

With a bit of a delay, but still very nice. The picture actually was taken on March, 8 2009 but stitched on December, 12 - as I said, bit of a delay. It was very cold in Boston that day so we had to go from coffee shop to coffee shop to warm up and take pictures in between...
