Vere Filius Dei erat iste. (Mt. 27:54)

Beginnings is a series at Riverview on the Old Testament spanning five weeks.

The original design called for many trees/roots, then we talked about sunflowers, then a single tree, then saw Andrew Hunt's Blue Ridge Origin set and decided we should ask to use the idea.

So, over the course of almost a week we constructed this set. There is a steel stud wall across the full length of the back wall (about 54 feet) with 3mil plastic and polymuslin cloth covering it. Attached to the back of the wall are 25 LED lights and the cross (also made from steel studs covered with plastic and material) is attached at the architectural truss and to the back of the wall.

The gray area and lettering is all projected on our white wall.

The 'dirt pile' is actually a structure of wood and chicken-wire with landscaping fabric covering it and 10 cubic feet of peat moss spread over the structure. The leaves are 1.5in Styrofoam that was cut with a jig-saw, painted and then holes were drilled in the ends to put bent PVC pipe into. The PVC was bent then spray-painted.

It may not sound like all that much but it was a long build.

This isn't the first film picture I took, but it is the first I saw when Wyatt sent me the files for the rolls we just got developed.

I don't know if it's because of that or because of the picture itself, but this is my favorite.

Sadly, the two photos I was looking forward to the most turned out black. poo poo poo. Wyatt is going to school me in exposure timing. And I will try them again with the next roll.

Wish me luck!

A random still life.

I like my new diary though, and I'm starting to write down things that happened. The pen signifies new beginnings in my new job, and the sweets are because from today, I vowed to cut down on sugar. That didn't quite work.

Today I called Phil at lunch and that was the start of a new beginning too. Things are looking up all round really :)

There was another assessment party. Something to do with a dishwasher, I forget, but we were stood down quite quickly.

We inspected the evaporator anodes and I got dirty. And I helped take a purifier apart for the first time on board. The first of many...

Perhaps not as apparent in this photo, but the ambient temperature is chilly and the smells of Fall are abundant.

In 1948, Emerson created its first basketball team, known then as the "Purple Panthers". The first team had all of the necessary elements: a coach, uniforms, a court, and of course, a "lively group of cheer leaders"! The team began competing with other Boston-area schools, and in 1951, the college also added a women's basketball team to the lineup. Go Purple Panthers!

Beginning of October 2014 I visited the Ukrainian capital Kiev for 4 days. As an enthusiastic aviation I had to visit the National Aviation Museum of Ukraine. Here you can see one of the largest collections of Soviet transport and military aircraft. I also visited, among others, the following highlights of Kiev: Independence Square (Maidan), Kiev Pechersk Lavra (Cave Monastery), St Sophia's Cathedral, St. Michael's Golden-Domed Monastery, St Volodymyr's Cathedral, Motherland Statue and War memorials with the Museum to the Great Patriotic War (WWII), Golden Gate of Kiev, Andrew's Descent with St Andrew's Church, the House with Chimeras, Kiev National Academic Theatre of Drama and Comedy. The weather in Kiev was very pleasant early October for a city break. Mostly sunny with temperatures around 15 degrees in the afternoon.

Busy day today, first off to Bristol for my son's Tae Kwon Do Black Belt exam and then later this afternoon off to the cinema to watch the new Spiderman movie. Catch up with you all later!

This is where it all began, in the solar system. A speck of dust, then two, three, and a swirling motion from the atmosphere. Today, we are here.

Diver scallop with potato-bacon risotto, winter greens, and toasted garlic. (à la carte $10)

Notes: The potato risotto was interesting - a brunoise of potato in a creamy risotto-like mixture. I'm not sure why he called it a risotto - did the chef cook the brunoise potatoe like a risotto: adding broth and stirring slowly until the starche leached out of the potatoe to form a thick porridge? Not sure. It was nice and smokey from the bacon. It was over-salted....

... as were the scallops, where just this side of over-cooked for me. They were wonderfully pan-seared and carmelized, but the insides had gone just tad tough for my liking... but they were still acceptable.

The winter vegetables were a disaster. They could have used another hour in a braise - they were tough and stringy - I had a hard time chewing it - ended up swalling it in a huge unchewed wad. Yuck!!

Beginning Fall: I dug out one og my older cameras - just because I didn't want to carry a lot. So I came across that 60mm APSC lens, that I don't use a lot. Today that seemed to be a good choice, I got some nice shots although it was a walk with my partner, and she does not like to wait an hour until I have finished my composition ... ;-) I'm sure many photographers know that.
