Rhiw Fachno (Machno Quarry) is the old Slate Quarry at the head of the Machno Valley in Rural Conwy. Since my Mother moved to the village of Cwm Penmacho 18 years ago I have loved this place.
The quarry ceased working in the 1960s and since then the once busy village has become largely characterised by holiday homes.

Tough Mudder held at Boughton House Kettering, Northamptonshire. Boughton House is home to thousands of acres of the UK’s thickest woodlands and natural water obstacles making the 12-mile course a real challenge. All competitors who crosses the finish line were given a refreshing glass of Ginger Grouse the 2014 Official Pint Partner to Tough Mudder.

Because Frederick Haymaker’s second wife, Rachel Davis died in childbirth in 1809, Frederick sent Rachel’s baby, James Davis, to Meadville to be raised by Rachel’s parents.
James was raised probably in Meadville, PA by his maternal grandparents for the first ten years of his life, and received only a limited education. At ten years of age he returned to live with his father, who had married again, and was living at Brady’s Run, Beaver County, PA. At the age of 14, he moved with his father back to Franklin Twp, OH and worked for his father in the woolen mill.
James D. served as a Justice of the Peace for several terms. At the age of 21, he engaged for two years in the manufacture of wooden pails in Franklin Mills; the next two years he had charge of a hotel at Fairport, on Lake Erie; then returning to Franklin he engaged in farming.
Somebody sent me an e-mail the other day asking me if I've become a "slacker" as I don't seem to bird as often anymore. Well, I've always been a "slacker", but that's got nothing to do with it. To be honest, I'm kind of sick of the stupidity and small-minded ego driven bullshit that seems to go hand in hand with birding. That doesn't mean that I've stopped birding, but rather that I no longer participate as much in the public aspects of birding. I'm still out there. I just don't discuss it publicly as much as I used to.
The other thing is, the last couple of years I have spent months at a time away from home working. So when I'm home, I'd rather spend time with my family than discuss whether or not John Q's most recent sightings are bogus or not. As a matter of fact, I'd rather drink bleach and vote republican than have that discussion again, but that's beside the point........
Because NICTD can't own property in Illinois, Metra actually owns this South Shore Line's parking lot. I think it also gets all the revenues the parking lot generates. This isn't nearly as unfair as it sounds - after all, Metra does help fund the South Shore Line, so at least some of those revenues go back to NICTD.
Because the cable guy was coming so early the next day, we came back to the house after the opera to sleep. Just a note: air mattress + hardwood floors + pushed against the wall = squeaks EVERY TIME someone moves.

I hesitate to add this because of its flaws, but we don't see northern lights in Pennsylvania very often. I guess I am just excited that we got to view the event tonight! This is a 79 second exposure, with me manually holding the shutter down and jabbering at the same time, thus the camera shake.
So here I am, 12:18am taking a picture because I got so carried away with homework and perusing around the Net and sort of forgot to take my picture. Nothing spectacular, but it was sort of an accident (the washing out of my face completely). I just hate noise a lot so I made the exposure bias +1.
Then it came to me that it was actually a nice mistake I made by washing out all my pigment. Of course, today was Inaguration Day and Barack Obama was finally sworn in as the 44th President. But today wasn't necessarily all about MLK's dream being fulfilled or African-Americans have finally triumphed over the oppressor. It was about the coming of a New Age. New administration and a New World Order. No more Red States or Blue States, but the United States. I know this is starting to get lame, but I'm almost there.
I remember reading in Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison and how the main character was struggling with an identity crisis. The picture today is I suppose to encompass that meaning by stressing the fact that the call for colorlessness (or white), is to call for the loss of identity. Sure, we shouldn't only rely on the pigment of our skin to help us identity ourselves as people, but its one of the things that make us individuals. I've realized that being African is a really cool thing nowadays. I mean, I've always acknowledged my ethnic background, but only within the past 2 years have I actually admitted to people that my parents were immigrants from the Continent. And I think I've become more of a human when I started to claim my African heritage. I don't know, just an epiphany.
Anyhow, me and my best friend are planning to backpack through Europe this summer with a couple of our friends. At first, we wanted to travel the Silk Road, but realized our parents, even though they grew up in 3rd World environments, refuse to let us explore impoverished and underdeveloped sites. Oh well. Our trip consists of going through:

2. Belgium
3. Switzerland
4. France
5. Italy
6. Greece
We have a whole plan set up to raise money, organize ourselves, and get discounts on International Student ID cards. We're going into Princeton to get them done tomorrow. Btw, our parents don't know we're doing this...yet. We're working on a PowerPoint Presentation to show them how well organized and level-headed we all are.
ps. So the update with my gauges - I bought 12s and 10s at the mall yesterday (and new vans). I had the 12s in for like...a day. I put the 10s in and they didn't hurt at all. I'm not gonna go up everyday, because that's crazy. But I think I'm gonna buy 2 at a time every week when my mom gives me money and go from there. I kind of want to go up to a 0. lol. Okay, 1. But I can see myself gauging my ears up to a 2 by mid-march. really. maybe I'm going too fast - someone let me know lol.

Because of where we sat, most of the time the only view I had of Jude was blocked by her microphone... This is the only good shot of her...
The car radio broke. That's when Jude Vadala started singing. First she bought an autoharp, then a piano, then a guitar, a mandolin, another guitar and then a fiddle, all of which hang on her kitchen wall. Except the piano. It's in her living room. Jude has been a tenacious member of the Guelph, Ontario music scene for the past 30 years. Her musical adventures have taken her across Canada and the U.S. with the critically acclaimed group The Bird Sisters where she honed her skills as a songwriter and recording artist.
She has produced five albums (Flo, Different Stories, She and She and She, Angel Songs) and has worked on over 50 musical projects with artists such as Tannis Slimmon, James Gordon, Harri Palm, Jah Youssouf and Lewis Melville, Katherine Wheatley and Scott Merritt.
She is currently a member of a ChristmasSong trio with well-known singer-songwriters Tannis Slimmon and Katherine Wheatley.
Jude is now an in demand music teacher. As well she does workshops in harmony and songwriting and, with Katherine Wheatley has developed a songwriting and CD making program for young students called YouthSongs. After taking a very long break from recording, Jude will be releasing her sixth album called Deeper in the fall of 2009..
Because a fire in the city centre could spread quickly, several fire engines are automatically called if an alarm goes off. This bike is used so that someone can quickly get to the scene, check if it is a real fire or a false alarm (someone burning the toast perhaps) and contact the fire engines to send them back if they are not needed.

Fashion design is the art of the application of design and aesthetics or natural beauty to clothing and accessories. Fashion design is influenced by cultural and social latitudes, and has varied over time and place. Fashion designers work in a number of ways in designing clothing and accessories such as bracelets and necklace, because of the time required to bring a garment onto the market, must at times anticipate changing consumer tastes.
Fashion designers attempt to design clothes which are functional as well as aesthetically pleasing. They must consider who is likely to wear a garment and the situations in which it will be worn. They have a wide range and combinations of materials to work with and a wide range of colors, patterns and styles to choose from. Though most clothing worn for everyday wear falls within a narrow range of conventional styles, unusual garments are usually sought for special occasions such as evening wear or party dresses.
Some clothes are made specifically for an individual, as in the case of haute couture or bespoke tailoring. Today, most clothing is designed for the mass market, especially casual and every-day wear.
Structure[edit]
Fashion designers can work in a number of many ways. Fashion designers may work full-time for one fashion as 'in-house designers' which owns the designs. They may work alone or as part of a team. Freelance designers work for themselves, selling their designs to fashion houses, directly to shops, or to clothing manufacturers. The garments bear the buyer's label. Some fashion designers set up their own labels, under which their designs are marketed. Some fashion designers are self-employed and design for individual clients. Other high-fashion designers cater to specialty stores or high-fashion department stores. These designers create original garments, as well as those that follow established fashion trends. Most fashion designers, however, work for apparel manufacturers, creating designs of men’s, women’s, and children’s fashions for the mass market. Large designer brands which have a 'name' as their brand such as Abercrombie & Fitch, Justice, or Juicy are likely to be designed by a team of individual designers under the direction of a designer director.
Designing a garment[edit]
Fashion designers work in different ways. Some sketch their ideas on paper, while others drape fabric on a dress form. When a designer is completely satisfied with the fit of the toile (or muslin), he or she will consult a professional pattern maker who then makes the finished, working version of the pattern out of card or via a computerized system. The pattern maker's job is very precise and painstaking. The fit of the finished garment depends on their accuracy. Finally, a sample garment is made up and tested on a model to make sure it is an operational outfit.
Fashion design is generally considered to have started in the 19th century with Charles Frederick Worth who was the first designer to have his label sewn into the garments that he created. Before the former draper set up his maison couture (fashion house) in Paris, clothing design and creation was handled by largely anonymous seamstresses, and high fashion descended from that worn at royal courts. Worth's success was such that he was able to dictate to his customers what they should wear, instead of following their lead as earlier dressmakers had done. The term couturier was in fact first created in order to describe him. While all articles of clothing from any time period are studied by academics as costume design, only clothing created after 1858 are considered as fashion design.
It was during this period that many design houses began to hire artists to sketch or paint designs for garments. The images were shown to clients, which was much cheaper than producing an actual sample garment in the workroom. If the client liked their design, they ordered it and the resulting garment made money for the house. Thus, the tradition of designers sketching out garment designs instead of presenting completed garments on models to customers began as an economy.
The garments produced by clothing manufacturers fall into three main categories, although these may be split up into additional, more specific categories
Haute couture[edit]

Until the 1950s, fashion clothing was predominately designed and manufactured on a made-to-measure or haute couture basis (French for high-sewing), with each garment being created for a specific client. A couture garment is made to order for an individual customer, and is usually made from high-quality, expensive fabric, sewn with extreme attention to detail and finish, often using time-consuming, hand-executed techniques. Look and fit take priority over the cost of materials and the time it takes to make.[1][2] Due to the high cost of each garment, haute couture makes little direct profit for the fashion houses, but is important for prestige and publicity.[3]
Ready-to-wear (pret-a-porter)[edit]

Ready-to-wear clothes are a cross between haute couture and mass market. They are not made for individual customers, but great care is taken in the choice and cut of the fabric. Clothes are made in small quantities to guarantee exclusivity, so they are rather expensive. Ready-to-wear collections are usually presented by fashion houses each season during a period known as Fashion Week. This takes place on a city-wide basis and occurs twice a year. The main seasons of Fashion Week include, spring/summer, fall/winter, resort, swim, and bridal.
Mass market[edit]

Currently the fashion industry relies more on mass market sales. The mass market caters for a wide range of customers, producing ready-to-wear garments using trends set by the famous names in fashion. They often wait around a season to make sure a style is going to catch on before producing their own versions of the original look. In order to save money and time, they use cheaper fabrics and simpler production techniques which can easily be done by machine. The end product can therefore be sold much more cheaply.[4][5][6]
There is a type of design called "kutch" design originated from the German word "kitschig" meaning "ugly" or "not aesthetically pleasing." Kitsch can also refer to "wearing or displaying something that is therefore no longer in fashion."[7] Often, high-waisted trousers, associated with the 1980s, are considered a "kitsch" fashion statement.[8]

Median annual wages for salaried fashion designers were $61,160 in May 2008. The middle 50 percent earned between $42,150 and $87,120.[9] The lowest 10 percent earned less than $32,150, and the highest 10 percent earned more than $124,780. Median annual earnings were $52,860 (£28,340) in apparel, piece goods, and notions - the industry employing the largest numbers of fashion designers.[10]

** Method used **
1. Take an amazing image. [DON'T KNOW HOW AMAZING THIS IS!]
2. use the eyedropper to sample the color you want to color the image with. This may be from another image, the swatches flyout, or really anywhere.
3. Add an empty layer to your image.
4.in photo shop ( or elements) press alt-backspace to fill the layer with the foreground color you sampled. (MAc, option-delete)
5.change the layer blending mode (where it says "normal") to "color"
6. If the duotone isn't quite right, you can use the eyedropper tool to grab a new color. just press alt-backspace (option-delete) to install the new color.
NOTE: The trick is to choose a color that complements your image.
What I did differently is made the color layer opaque about 65% after blending because there was a hint of red in the old building that I wanted to pick up. I guess this doesn't really make it a TRUE duotone but I really like how this photo turned out... I'll try the real duotone on another picture... that doesn't have my favorite color red in it:)
