Because it is so common, the Robin is often overlooked as a photo subject. Today, I made it a challenge to get a few shots (not easy since it is winter here, and most have headed south).
I wanted to go and see the ocean. I took severals photos as if it was for my daily picture, except that I've took photos with a medium format, a film camera, and a DSLR.
Because of a hard working time coming I should reduce my flickr surfing habit for the next weeks. I'm not leaving, I should continue to post some pictures, but I would not enjoy your pictures so often as I'm used to. For that I'm really sorry.

Grazie! :-))

Because of its unique geographical location, Fenghuang never suffered from the destruction of wars or natural disasters in hundreds of years. From the Miao people uprising in 1795 to the Getun uprising in 1937, there happened dozens of wars, none of which affected the town. Even during the war of resistance against Japanese invasion, Fenghuang town had not been occupied by Japanese invaders or suffered air bombing.
In the year of 1949, Fenghuang was peacefully liberated. In the following 50 years, Fenghuang was spared of large-scale economical construction that happened in other districts. As the people of the ancient town cherished this especially valuable heritage bestowed by its profound cultural gifts, the local government has conducted a strict control over all the construction activities and thus successfully preserving the authenticity and integrity of the ancient town.

Almost beginning my fourth and (probably) last year at Carleton. It's gone by so quickly, and although I'm excited by all that I'm doing in the coming year, the end of this chapter of my life feels very near. So for everything that has happened so far and everything that is yet to come: Thanks, Carleton.
because:
a. I'm going to (yes another, we do like making costumes a lot) themed costume party revolving around circus people.
b. I need something to laugh about at the moment so I don't cry.
c. I look an awful lot like my dad in this photo mostly because I have his giant faaaaarhead and am wearing a tremendous beard that looks not unlike his. Happy Father's Day Dadoo!
d. I bought this top at urban outfitters more than a year ago and thought I should really wear it.
e. Just rewatching Fur: An Imaginary Portrait of Diane Arbus and loving it even more.
Because this is now the Roads Chapter in our colourful adventure, I have to emphasize on how the road on that picture starts on the lower right corner of the picture, crosses all the way to the lower left corner of the picture, before following the valley and making a U-turn, climbing the mountain slope, only to come back virtually where we started, only a bit higher.

This is my take on a 1992 Jeep YJ Wrangler Sahara. With so many LEGO versions of this iconic vehicle out there, I wanted to make mine stand out with a more distinct and original look.
The idea for the inverted paint scheme came from GTA Online, where car liveries aren’t exact replicas but rather playful references to their real-life counterparts. The front design was inspired by a build from custom_creations_lego on Instagram.
Hope you like my build—and remember, they purr in herds!
P.S. Don’t worry, the gun is loaded with tranquilizers, not real bullets!
just because its the song playing as i upload this lol.

Bought these for $3. Also, the family having the yardsale was struggling pretty bad. Probably because they were buying this crap instead of saving money for harder times.

BACKSTORY: Got up around 7:15AM, made it out driving by 7:51 AM and went out until around 1:30PM for a total of 5 hours, 39 minutes. Spent $73.00 plus ~$7.98 gas for 41 miles of driving (15.1 mpg @ $2.94/G), for a total cost of $80.98. We drove to 64 yard sales, stopping at 22 (34%) of them. We made 49 purchases (50 items) for a total estimated value of $743.64, leading to a profit/savings of $662.66. So in essence, we multiplied our $80.98 investment by 9.18X. (Also, if you think about it, the profit counts for even more when you consider that we have to earn $~755 on the job, pre-tax, in order to take home the $662 in cash that we saved. How long does $662 of disposable income take to earn, vs the 5.65 hrs we spent here?) Anyway, this works out to a *post-tax* "wage" of $117.29/hr as a couple or $58.64/hr per person.

Note: I chose this as my "photo of the day" for Oct 31, 2015."
I made the choice because of factors that had little to do with the photo itself - the subject here is indeed a beautiful young woman, and I think she looks great in the photo, but that wasn't the point...
First: it's relatively rare, for me, that I can take a photo of someone who isn't moving, or smiling stupidly, or somehow changing their expression because they know the camera is aimed at them. The woman here was sound asleep, sitting across from me in the Acela train, so she had no idea I was aiming my innocent-looking camera phone at her. (Indeed, I doubt that she would have noticed even if she was awake, but that's another story...)
There is an often-repeated adage in the photography biz (from Robert Capa, I think) that "if your pictures aren't good enough, then you're not close enough." And in most of the photography classes that I take, the instructor tells everyone (especially me, it seems) to put away our telephoto lens, use a normal-length (50mm) or wide-angle lens (28mm or 35mm) lens, and get closer to the subject we're photographing. Okay, so maybe I should pay more attention to that advice ... though I am not yet convinced that the results would be worth the effort, if the subject was actually awake.
As for the photo itself: it's obviously "soft," which is a polite way of saying that it's not really "tack sharp." Maybe that's because the iPhone shoots everything at an aperture of f/2.2 so you get a certain amount of blurring with the shallow DoF, whereas you probably wouldn't notice it with an aperture of f/8, or even f/5.6.
But it also means, as a practical matter, that you have to be much more careful about focusing the camera precisely on the subject that you're photographing ... which I often forget to do. I generally rely on the auto-focus feature of whatever camera I happen to be using, and it generally does a pretty good job. With the the iPhone, you can touch the screen lightly to get the camera to focus on whatever part of the image you're concerned with ... but if you then move the camera/phone, the focusing will change. I've read up on this a little more carefully now, and realize that I have to "press hard" on the relevant portion of the displayed image, in order to tell the camera that I want to "lock" the focus (and the exposure) on a specific part of the displayed image.
What I've been doing, in most cases, is simply holding down the shutter-button for several seconds, in order to get a continuous "burst" of shots, from which the iPhone camera-mechanism will automatically choose the one (or ones) that it thinks are sharpest. That doesn't necessarily mean that it chooses the best image, but at least it should get rid of most of the blurry ones. I thought that was particularly relevant in this case, because we were on a moving train that was rocking, jiggling, and bumping in unpredictable ways ... so I couldn't be sure of getting a "steady" shot, no matter how hard I tried.
Of course, what I could have done -- and probably should have done, since the subject here was sound asleep for about half an hour -- was to put my iPhone away, and retrieve one of my other cameras, which would have allowed me to change the aperture to something like f/8.
Maybe next time ...

As I reported in a separate Flickr album a couple months ago, most of my business trips have involved air travel from New York City; I’ve seen the insides of more airports and more airplanes than I care to remember.
But most of my trips along the eastern corridor of the U.S. have involved trains, and I find them to be a very relaxing and enjoyable contrast. These trips almost always start with a subway ride to Penn Station, rather than a taxi ride to JFK or LGA or EWR; and they are followed by a relatively pleasant journey along the East Coast on an Amtrak Acela train that has a much greater chance of departing and arriving on time than most of my airplane journeys.
I took a recent trip to Philadelphia in August 2015 and then another one (for a different client) in October 2015. In both cases, my journey began with a subway ride from 96th Street to Penn Station; and then a train trip from the Amtrak terminal in NYC’s Penn Station to the architecturally interesting Amtrak station in Philadelphia, before reaching my client’s office for a day-long meeting. At the end of the day, the journey reversed itself, and I was back home shortly after dinner.
I took a few photos and videos along the way; the ones I’ve uploaded here are representative of the trip...
Maybe because I grew up nearby a large industrial area ... or maybe because I have had several jobs in the harbour or on a business or industrial site, but I love to roam in such areas.
Sometimes it seems to be so silent like nothing much is happening .. occasionally a car or truck, otherwise you see little.
But knowing that inside all these halls, sheds and offices is so much activity going on, even though it's hardly visible from the outside; that makes it an exciting area to me.
So yesterday I walked on such a terrain in our town. I went through the gate of this big tire company.
The tires itself were also large, sometimes just as big as me.
I thought it was beautiful.
The boy on that cart found out, sooner than me, that the gate had already been closed and had to 'free' me.
Or had to chase me away

I decided to ask my next stranger to be part of my project because I'd accumulated quite a few portraits of him as I'd been strolling around taking pictures of the trains. This pic was taken when he was between the engine and the carriage coupling them up. His bright blue eyes seem to shine out at me;) Meet Mick.
Mick, like Rueben, has been a steam train enthusiast most of his life. He went along to an open day at Sheffield Park in 1960 and he joined in 1961 for the princely sum of 5 shillings. Mick explained that all volunteers start by working on the station and those who want to progress to other roles are encouraged to do so. Mick went on to join the Carriage and Wagon Department in 1964 where they repair and repaint the carriages. I thought that was in the shed by the side of the rails but Mick told me they didn't have a shed in those days, they worked in the open. From there he went to the Loco workshop in maintenance and then to the Footplate and the Operating side. He started to train as a driver in 1981, passed his final test in 1988 and he's been a driver since then.
I asked Mick how his wife felt about the amount of time he spent on the trains and he surprised me when he told me his wife is also a driver and has been driving the steam trains for about 20 years. And his son has been a driver for about 9 years. He also has a daughter, but she has never taken up driving although she did do a stint in the buffet carriage.
I always thought volunteer steam train drivers just drove at the one location but Mick told me all about the driving holidays they go on across the UK and abroad. Mick and his wife have been to Poland every year for the last 8 years. It is a steam train drivers holiday and they spend their time driving the trains across Poland. They also go to Norfolk every year on a two week steam train holiday. It all sounded great fun.
Finally Mick told me that the family live in the original railway cottages at Horsted Keynes. They bought the cottage for £1,850 in 1970!
Thank you for being part of my series Mick. I could have talked to you for hours but you had a train to drive:)

Because Vietnam has been in the news lately....
The name Ha Long (下龍 Xialong) means "descending dragon".
Before 19th century, the name Ha Long Bay had not been recorded in the old books of the country. It has been called An Bang, Luc Thuy, Van Don ... In the late 19th century, the name Ha Long Bay appeared on the Maritime Map of France. The French-language Hai Phong News reported "Dragon appears on Ha Long Bay".
According to local legend, when Vietnam had just started to develop into a country, they had to fight against invaders. To assist the Vietnamese in defending their country, the gods sent a family of dragons as protectors. This family of dragons began spitting out jewels and jade. These jewels turned into the islands and islets dotting the bay, linking together to form a great wall against the invaders. Under magics, numerous rock mountains abruptly appeared on the sea, ahead of invaders' ships; the forward ships struck the rocks and each other. After winning the battle, the dragons were interested in peaceful sightseeing of the Earth, and then decided to live in this bay. The place where the mother dragon descended was named Ha Long, the place where the dragon's children attended upon their mother was called Bai Tu Long island (Bai: attend upon, Tu: children, Long: dragon), and the place where the dragon's children wriggled their tails violently was called Bach Long Vy island (Bach: white-color of the foam made when Dragon's children wriggled, Long: dragon, Vy: tail), present day Tra Co peninsula, Mong Cai. Because I am late posting this I could combine it with week 14's theme of painting with light: shot in the dark and lit with a torch
Because the models themselves are not too stable, I had to make stands for them. Unlike original game, however, I have grouped them in fives, so I had more place on the stand itself to play with details.
One has a ruined bunker, second - lava pool with some Ork stew cooking above it, and third - an unfortunate marine.
Just because I was playing around with back-light and this scarf, seeing what I could come up with.
My life is screaming along at 100 mph as we approach the end of the school year. No different, I suppose, than everyone else's.
...because I want to tell a story about a wonderful world around me.

Because they warm up more quickly than the normally coloured variety, the melanistic adder is much harder to spot basking out in the open like this, but the chill easterly wind meant that this one was forced to bask for longer and with more of its body exposed than usual.
