these are the string blocks i will piece together and quilt for a pillow top (for a throw pillow).
i've layed them out on a piece of white foam-core in order to shuffle them around til I find an arrangement I like before I sew the 4 blocks together.

i find that sewing/quilting is almost theraputic for me when I'm feeling antsy and house-bound. it gives me an outlet to be creative, create functional art and decorate my house all at the same time.

My friend Su in front of several batik paintings for sale.
At the National Craft Complex (Kompleks Budaya Kraf) in Kuala Lumpur you can paint your own batik. I had never painted batik before, but I very much enjoyed it.
Batik is a traditional craft in Malaysia. My Malaysian friend learned it in school. Wax is applied to the cloth as the outline of the design. Then fabric dye is used and you paint within the design.
The price to paint your own was 15 ringgit, plus 3 rm if you wanted to have the wax removed (and 2 extra days) and 5 ringgit if you wanted to have it put in a mat.

A friend decided that she was going to try quilting, and bought a bunch of fabric and tools to get started. Eventually she figured out that she wasn't really that interested and handed everything over to me. I'm not a batik fan, and I prefer a brighter palette. What better than to make a gift for her instead.
I used a pattern that my friend had bought at Rumpled Quilt Skins, a 'Grade 1' design by Joan Wing. It was too simple for me, and originally only used 4 fabrics. I adapted it for the fabric I had, and changed some parts. This includes the gold squares in the border, and using 2 fabrics (plus the background) instead 1 in each block.
I'll give this to her the next time that our paths cross. Though with COVID still restricting travel, I have no idea when that will be.
A red sarong in the clothes line. It’s all waterlogged after the heavy rain. Batik has been both an art and a craft for centuries and its commonly used with clothing in Sri Lanka.It's almost impossible to repeat the same design.

Box pouch, made from assorted batiks. While I generally don't like batiks, I really like the design on this one. I love the geometric pattern, along with the streaks of teal, yellow, orange and pink. I used a navy blue zipper that goes well with the navy blue base of the fabric.
I was lucky to find this patch of garden at a park that nicely matches the bag's colour scheme. We have about a month before the flowers will start to fade.
On this box pouch I experimented with the dimensions. I didn't precut the sides, but instead cut them out after I did the end seams. It lets me be more flexible about the final dimensions, without having to do all the math beforehand.

Its particularity is well known up to outside of Java.
As we recognize, Batik is Indonesia particular cloth which represent everything, history, fashion, women, and Indonesia itself.
Some regency, even some island have their own motive on Batik with its philosophy inside. Trenggalek also has particular motive of Batik with the same charm like any other motive from other area.
