El batik es un método de diseño sobre telas, ya sea algodón, seda, manta o lino, en el que se se uriliza cera para reservar las secciones de tela que no se pretenden teñir
El dibujo reservado con cera sobre un tejido blanco permanece blanco después de pintar o de teñir.
Una vez realizado el dibujo en cera, se tiñe de un color. Después de esta primera capa de color, pueden volver a aplicar cera. Asà vuelven a reservar dibujos antes de aplicar el segundo color. Este segundo color se mezclará con el primer color, por ejemplo si el primer color era amarillo y el segundo azul, el resultado será verde.
Este proceso de aplicación de cera y tinte es repetido varias veces hasta conseguir los efectos deseados.
El proceso de fabricación de un "batik" es una combinación de conocimientos técnicos, sentimiento y sensibilidad personal. Su elaboración puede llevar dÃas, semanas e inclusos meses. Lo habitual es que el maestro haga el dibujo en la tela y sean sus ayudantes los que realicen el trabajo del batik, bajo su supervisión.
Al final se elimina la cera.
El batik es un arte cuyo origen se pierde en la antigüedad, . Hasta 1920 se creÃa que su origen era el sur de la India y que luego fue llevado a Indonesia por colonizadores indios. Un grupo minorÃtario sostuvo que eran aún más remotos, que se originaban en Egipto o en la Antigua Persia. Sin embargo, después de la Primera Guerra mundial algunos estudiosos en la materia apoyaron la teorÃa de que el batik era en realidad un arte nativo indonesio extremadamente antiguo en casà nada afectado por influencia externas. Este punto de vista ha obtenido en épocas recientes amplia aceptación
La isla de Java en Indonesia es famosa por sus batiks. El batik indonesio fue inscrito en 2009 sobre la Lista representativa del Patrimonio Cultural Inmaterial de la Humanidad de la Unesco.

batik today. This is what I came up to wear. Buying a very cheap
patchwork batik in Solo, that is made from batik leftovers. It's
environment friendly and still looks gorgeous.
