Batik is a traditional Indonesian method of dying fabrics using wax applied with a canting as shown in the picture. Once the design is drawn out onto the cloth it is then ready to be waxed. Wax is applied to the cloth over the areas of the design that the artisan wishes to remain the original color of the cloth. Normally this is white or cream. Traditional batik designs utilize patterns handed down over the generations. The oldest color that was used in traditional batik making was blue. The color was made from the leaves of the Indigo plant. The leaves were mixed with molasses sugar and lime and left to stand overnight. The waxed fabric is immersed in the dye bath of the first color. The fabric is then put into a cold water bath to harden the wax. When the desired color has been achieved and the fabric has dried, wax is reapplied over the areas that the artisan wishes to maintain the first dye color or another color at a later stage in the dying process. One lady doing this process told me it would take her a month to finish the cloth.

This quilt top hung unfinished for something close to a year before I found the courage to quilt it on my machine at home. It has an overall square- cornered stipple (I'm sure there is a better name for it). What a sense of accomplishment to have finished! (I may just have rewarded myself for this month's finishes with some sale fabric this week.) On to more quilt tops!

This will likely be donated through my mother-in-law's quilt guild to maybe find a home with another coordinating quilt I made last year and donated there since she is the one the who sent all the fabric my way.

Here's the sashing and cornerstone plan. I like the contrast between the jazzy batik stars and the sedate and traditional sashing and cornerstones. I was tempted to do the one central square in each nine patch cornerstone with a different batik from the stars, but then, they would have been neither sedate nor traditional, so I contained myself :)

Batik work starts here. A worker dips a stamp into hot beeswax, then repeatedly presses this stamp on a clean piece of cotton.

Batik sarongs hang side by side in the markets. These are very Indonesian patterns. I don't like them but people do love the busy look.

Nikka wears the top half of our Batik-inspired two-piece, with beaded detailing at the shoulders with a unique gold pattern against a cool blue. Can be worn open, tucked in or wrapped around and tied -- the possibilities are endless!

This was done during a Batik Watercolor Class. We melted wax and drew on thin rice paper followed with watercolor. After several layers and the paper covered in wax it was gently wrinkled and the last darkest watercolor layer was painted into the cracks. Then the wax was removed with a hot iron and newspaper. Very fun project.
