St Barnabas branch library, Leicester. This is the side elevation on St Barnabas Road; the main entrance is around the corner in French Road. I can't help feeling that the architects, Symington, Prince & Pike, must have been influenced by Asplund's much larger Stockholm public library of 1928 (see here, for example). Both include a central cylinder that rises above a rectangular base, although at Leicester the styling is more moderne, possibly reflecting its later date of 1937. The exquisitely detailed Dudokian brickwork at St Barnabas is a joy to behold. She has a younger sister in south Leicester at Southfields (1939), completed to a similar design, but where the drum motif is extended to the peripheral sections of the building too.

I think it is lost on most Americans that the first time a B-52 was used in actually live combat was in Vietnam and it was the only time a B-52 was lost to enemy fire.

Fifteen B-52s were lost during the 1972 Linebacker II Christmas bombings and three of those B-52s originated from the 97th Bombardment Wing assigned to Blytheville Air Force Base; B 52G 58-0201 "Charcoal 1" went down on the 18th, B 52G 58-0198 "Olive 1" and B 52G 58-0169 "Tan 3" were shot down on the 21st. Airmen from the 97th Bombardment Wing lost their lives and their photos appear on the lonely memorial at their abandoned base in Blytheville; Lt Col Keith R Heggen was in "Olive1", (now buried at Arlington Nat'l Cemetery) Lt Col Donald L Rissi, 1st LT Robert J Thomas and Msgt Walter L Ferguson were in "Charcoal 1" Major Bobby A Kirby, Capt Randall J Craddock, Capt George B Lockhart, Capt Ronald D Perry and 1st Lt Charles E Darr were in "Tan 3". These three 97th BW aircraft were stationed and flown out of Anderson AFB, Guam, as part of the 72nd Strategic Wing (Provisional).

I added some trees to my moc and i also added a zipline that goes from the roof of the base to a tree. Its pretty cool and the zipline idea was inspired by michaelmgf. Also my base should be done very soon. :)

The Minuteman Missile II was built by Boeing and deployed during the Cold War spanning over 30 years. The 351st Strategic Missile Wing based at Whiteman Air Force Base controlled 150 Minuteman intercontinental ballistic missiles buried in silos across central Missouri starting in 1963. The START-1 Treaty (Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty) called for the reduction of the number of nuclear weapons worldwide. The reduction resulted in the phase out and destruction of missiles and silos that were controlled by the 351st. By 1997 all silos commanded by the 351st Strategic Missile Wing had been imploded.

On an overcast Sunday afternoon Claudia and I headed out to the Marin Headlands for the Headland Center for the Arts Summer Open House (always fun.) After touring the studios and a tasty lunch in the HCA galley we headed out to take some photographs. We elected to visit Batteries Smith-Guthrie and O’Rorke, Endicott-era gun emplacements on the coastal ridge at the southern end of Rodeo Beach. Battery Smith-Guthrie once boasted four six-inch, rapid-fire guns on barbette mounts while Battery O’Rorke had four three-inch guns. Both defended minefields north of the Golden Gate. Winds were light for this time of year at around 10-12 MPH. The Sutton Flowform 30 proved adequate for my new Canon EOS-M cradle.

I have photographed these batteries before and given the dull overcast I did not expect much new out of this session. The highlight for me was a series of very low level KAP shots (< 6 feet high) taken at Battery O’Rorke just after I launched the cradle following a few adjustments. Like many of the other Endicott-period batteries, Battery O’Rorke is slowly returning to the earth. In this low level series your can see the blast apron slightly separating from its adjacent concrete paving with a neat line of opportunistic grass accenting the gap. I have read in old c. 1890’s reports the mention of “granolithing,” a form of concrete pour that mixes cement with crushed granite aggregate. These photographs have me wondering if the smoother surface is granolith.

It is pleasant spending time around Batteries Smith-Guthrie and O’Rorke. They command sweeping views of the northern approach to the Golden Gate – an asset for Sunday picnics as well as harbor defense. The kite flying was fun and the session yielded some useable photographs. Altogether an afternoon well spent.
