The sister base to Port Lockroy aka. "Base A"

Installing this thing was a bit scary. We had to drill holes for the water supply lines and then set the cabinet over the pipes. We were a bit concerned that the pipes wouldn't fit, but everything worked out in the end.

"THE GOLDEN AGE OF FLIGHT TEST"

BY MIKE MACHAT

It was not that long ago that the skies above the Mojave Desert were filled with exotic, futuristic-looking research aircraft known as the "X-Planes". These one of a kind experimental craft probed the unknown regimes from supersonic flight on into space and gave us the modern winged marvels we fly today. More importantly, most of these rare aircraft were only flown at Edwards AFB.

To preserve the rich legacy of Edwards, the Flight Test Historical Foundation commissioned aviation artist Mike Machat to design and produce a historical mural paying tribute to this aeronautical heritage.

The ten-foot-high by twenty-foot-long artwork depicts "The Golden Age of Flight Test" showing all the great X-Planes, motherships, and chase aircraft flown at Edwards AFB from 1947 through 1977.

More than a year in development, the mural features a primary formation of 15 great aircraft in flight, with many other aircraft and historical events depicted in the background. Below the formation is a desert panorama showing Main Base, North and South Bases, Rosamond and Rogers Dry Lakes, “Rocket Ridge”, and surrounding terrain as it appeared during the early 1960's. Production of the full-sized artwork took more than 600 hours over a three-month period and was completed in January of 2000.

Legendary research, launch and chase aircraft featured in the mural are, from left to right, as follows:

Bell X-1 launched by the Boeing B-29, chased by an FP-80A

Douglas D558-Il launched by the Boeing B-29 chased by an F-86A

Bell X-2 launched by the Boeing B-50, chased by an F-86A

NAA X-15 launched by the Boeing B-52, chased by an F-100F

Rockwell Shuttle launched by the Boeing 747, chased by a T-38
