Open house held at storied base

By Dave Palmer

LOS ALAMITOS, Calif. – The ‘Wings, Wheels and Rotors Expo’ is a one-day event that draws more than 30,000 spectators to the historic Los Alamitos Army Airfield. This year’s show was held Oct. 23.

As the only remaining military airfield in the greater Los Angeles area, the base plays a major role in regional exercises and real-world emergencies and is home to California's Southern Region Office of Emergency Services.

“What we want to do is develop a closer association with local and state officials,” said District Commander Col. Mark Toy. “When we get our new Rapid Response Vehicle we are going to house it here and we will be able to further develop these relationships. One of our mission sets is emergency operations.”

The show featured classic cars, military aircraft, emergency vehicles and first responders.

“We have the chance to educate a lot of families on water safety and disaster preparedness, as well as explain to the general public what the role of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is,” said Anne Hutton, chief of the district’s Emergency Management Office. “A lot of the military organizations aren’t sure either, because we have such a large civilian workforce.”

Event co-sponsor the California National Guard chose the event to announce the winners of their “Best Warrior” competition. Nine citizen-soldiers competed earlier this month at Camp San Luis Obispo, Calif. Events included a confidence course, land navigation, written essays and combatives, or hand-to-hand combat.

Spc. John Cunningham was named the top Soldier and Staff Sgt. Demetrius McCowan, the top non-commissioned officer.

McCowan and Cunningham move on to regional competition against winners from Arizona, New Mexico, Hawaii and Utah. The regional winners will then compete against National Guard, Reserve and active duty Soldiers in the U.S. Army’s Best Warrior Competition.

“I think I’ve saluted more here in the last hour than I have in my last year in command,” said Toy. “It’s nice to be with Soldiers; that’s what a lot of us in uniform truly love. Although my last year here working with Department of the Army Civilians, who are just as dedicated, is great.”

Who doesn't know what I'm talking about

Who's never left home, who's never struck out

To find a dream and a life of their own

A place in the clouds, a foundation of stone

Many precede and many will follow

A young girl's dream no longer hollow

It takes the shape of a place out west

But what it holds for her, she hasn't yet guessed

[Chorus:]

She needs wide open spaces

Room to make her big mistakes

She needs new faces

She knows the high stakes

She traveled this road as a child

Wide eyed and grinning, she never tired

But now she won't be coming back with the rest

If these are life's lessons, she'll take this test

[Repeat Chorus]

She knows the high stakes

As her folks drive away, her dad yells, "Check the oil!"

Mom stares out the window and says, "I'm leaving my girl"

She said, "It didn't seem like that long ago"

When she stood there and let her own folks know

[Repeat Chorus]

She knows the highest stakes

She knows the highest stakes

She knows the highest stakes

She knows the highest stakes

Squid Labs's booth was being run by Eric Wilhelm, and I think his wife, who I think was named Kristy, or Chrissy, or something similar. No? Correct me!

Squid Labs formed Instructables, a site for do-it-yourselfers to post how they've done things, in step-by-step pictures with notes. I recently used the site to how-to my magnetic acrylic Rubik's Cube.

I asked them if they were the Instructables folks, and they seemed happy someone knew about it, and didn't just want their phone laser etched (they were doing that free based on your own designs), and he asked if I'd posted anything. When I told him I was the magnetic Rubik's guy, they both got really excited, and they gave me a free tshirt from the table there in the foreground. He told me there were occasional workshops and open-houses, and if I was in the area, I should stop in. I totally want to do that, especially after watching MAKE's podcast of a tour of their labs.

They're looking forward to my next post, so now I have extra incentive to create another thing. Thanks, Squid Labs!
