Some of the market stalls have taken to baking their produce on site. This allows their customer to buy fresh from the oven

Today I have for you – Pagoda. Yes, yes, you are right – Pagoda. It is made of eggplants.

A pagoda is a tiered tower with multiple eaves, built in traditions originating in historic East Asia or with respect to those traditions, common to Nepal, India, China, Japan, Korea, Vietnam,...

I was following the pack

All swallowed in their coats

With scarves of red tied 'round their throats

To keep their little heads

From fallin' in the snow

And I turned 'round and there you go

And, Michael, you would fall

And turn the white snow red as strawberries

In the summertime...

ODC-Pots & Pans

These are but a small number of the baking/cooking pots and pans that I own.

While no technological masterpiece, this old egg beater is an obsolete dinosaur by today's standards - these days cakes are mostly made using electric mixers or food processors. But this old egg beater has served me well, having mixed cakes week in, week out when my family was growing up.

I could have taken a shot of the egg beater doing nothing, but thought I should whip up a 'throw it all in together and mix' type cake. The recipe called for the eggs to be beaten with some caster sugar till thick and creamy and then add the rest of the ingredients and combine. Now it's cooked, I suppose I'm going to have to eat it so my efforts aren't wasted.

Wage just realized that he should not have asked domos to help with the baking...

It comes in numerous forms, it is the simplest yet the most important ingredient of almost any baking recipe and of course of this which feeds the world: bread!

What would the world be without flour?

Week 50 / 52 is baking / food. A little late posting but shot this last night. One of my favourite snacks, "Cheese things" can't wait for them to cool off so I can dig in.

Together with other smaller items, Kim's baking day produced a chicken and mushroom pie plus a version of cinnamon rolls using left over mince pie makings from Xmas.

Probably my second last bake in Jan 2022 before I had tested positive. Focaccia with rosemary & sea salt. Biga preferment (~50% hydration), total hydration ~70%. Mine came out a bit too chewy due to overbaking. A modified recipe taken from Carol Tennet book I lent from my neighbour, but followed folding techniques in youtu.be/bq2Kins2ANg

In a Boudin Bakery sourdough bread bowl

They'll go. They and so many other things will go. We just can't keep all the things that remind us of our mother. It just becomes clutter. They're old and rusty and very well used. She baked, my mother. It was one of her top ways of showing love. If you showed up at her house she would feed you and visit with you and love you and then when you were ready to go she would send you home with some baking. And her bread was amazing. Sometime in summer I was over there for lunch and we had a simple meal of toasted tomato sandwiches. At one point during the meal she made a comment that this was the last loaf of bread she had in the freezer. At that time we already knew that things weren't looking good. I didn't want to put any significance on those bites of sandwich. I wanted to enjoy them just as I had all the other bread she'd made. It was hard but I managed to accomplish it. And the thing is, this is likely only half of the bread pans. When she baked her dough was... well, think old stye wash tub size. Her filled bread pans would completely cover our dining room table as they rose.

Off they go. The best I can do is hold on to the memories and take a photo.
