The average length of their marriages was nearly 50 years, so I thought that they could answer authoritatively my question about the key to marital success. Their answers, however, diverged along gender lines. While the wives stressed the importance of conversation, the husbands’ emphasis on “keeping quiet” can best be summarized by this answer: “Whenever we start an argument I just give in.”

After the success of the DC-3, Douglas Aircraft began looking into a four-engined airliner with true transcontinental range—as successful as the DC-3 was, it still had to make an average of five stops between New York and Los Angeles. Douglas wanted an aircraft that would need at most one stop, if that. United Airlines was interested in such an aircraft, and Douglas built the DC-4E to United’s requirements: this was a 42-seat airliner with a triple-tail unit and a wide fuselage for passenger comfort.
While the DC-4E had promise, it was also technically complicated, and both United and the other launch customer, Eastern Airlines, rejected it after its first flight in June 1938. Douglas then designed a simpler, slightly smaller and more streamlined aircraft, with a single tail and longer nose. This new version, simply designated DC-4, met the airlines’ requirements, but before it could enter revenue service, the attack on Pearl Harbor brought the United States into the war, and the DC-4 production line was immediately converted to building aircraft for the US Army Air Force as the C-54 Skymaster.
While not as widespread, as produced, or as versatile as the C-47 Skytrain, the C-54 had longer range and could carry more passengers. Some were used as purely cargo aircraft, but most served as passenger transports: it was the only USAAF cargo aircraft that could fly nonstop over the Atlantic to England. 1170 were built during the war.
After the end of the war, Douglas built a further 72 DC-4s before switching to the larger and more advanced DC-6; it was unnecessary to build more, as the USAAF released half of the C-54 fleet as surplus. Like the C-47, these were rapidly bought by airlines, namely Pan American, who inaugurated transatlantic service in January 1946. Enough remained in the newly independent US Air Force to become the primary transport aircraft, alongside the C-47, for the balance of the 1940s and well into the 1950s.
The Skymaster’s defining moment came in 1948 when Josef Stalin, the dictator of the Soviet Union, had the city of West Berlin blockaded by land. Rather than back down, President Truman was determined to supply West Berlin from the air—something that had proven difficult for even the well-equipped Allies to do with much smaller military units in World War II, much less with a city of nearly a million people that needed a minimum of 500 tons of supplies a day. The C-47 could only haul about three tons apiece, but the C-54 could transport nearly ten tons.
Nearly every C-54 in USAF service, along with the similar R5Ds operated by the US Navy, were sent to Germany to supply Berlin, operating from June 1948 to April 1949. Specialized training for the mission was established at Great Falls AFB, Montana, where crews would experience similar weather to that experienced in Germany and would have plenty of open airspace to practice in—the air corridors of western Europe were far too crowded with transports for training. Once the course was completed, crews were sent to Rhein-Main airbase in Germany to begin Airlift duties, flying what crews called “the ladder” of three C-54 flights followed by a single C-47 flight to Berlin-Templehof airfield, with a turnaround time of less than half an hour on the ground, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, in all weather. So important was the C-54 to the Airlift that the medal awarded for the mission consisted of a tiny gold Skymaster pin. When the Berlin Airlift ended, a thousand tons of supplies were being flown into Berlin, more than the city had received by land before the blockade began. The Berlin Airlift was the first success scored by the United States in the nascent Cold War, and bound the American aircrews tightly with a grateful German population, easing postwar tension.
Following the Berlin Airlift, the C-54 remained in service, though it was replaced in the transport role by the C-119 Flying Boxcar and the C-130 Hercules. C-54s were used extensively to fly personnel to the Korean War, and were still used both as executive transports and search-and-air rescue coordination aircraft during Vietnam. The last aircraft were withdrawn in 1974. 27 other air forces also used C-54s at one time or another. Today, about 40 C-54s are left, with half that number flyable; 14 are flown by Buffalo Airways of Canada, supplying research stations and mining camps in the Northwest Territories. A few have been converted to firefighting aircraft.
N55CW has gone by many numbers in its long career. Built as C-54D 42-72568 for the USAAF in 1942, it was transferred to the US Navy before delivery and became a R5D-3, Bureau Number 56506; it was put into service near the end of World War II. It would serve with several Navy transport units and was redesignated a C-54Q in 1962. Retired in 1970, 56506 went to MASDC, but was quickly acquired by a company in Lewiston, Idaho. However, it doesn't seem to have flown for awhile until 1981, when Conifair of Canada bought the aircraft and converted it to a bug sprayer by adding spray booms to the wings.
56506, now C-GBPA, flew with Conifair until 1997, when the company went bankrupt; it was then acquired by Buffalo Airways, who used the aircraft both as a bug sprayer and a transport. In 2011, Buffalo sold the aircraft (or it was repossessed), and it became N55CW. It was stored in Florida for a decade, until finally the C-54 was either bought or donated to the Western Sky Aviation Warbird Museum in St. George, Utah in 2022.
Unfortunately for me, the museum was closed when we stopped by in 2025, so I couldn't get many pictures; I had been there in 2021, before they had acquired 56506/N55CW. (A shame, too--the museum has an all-black deHavilland Vampire that I really wanted to get!) Luckily, the C-54 was parked close to the fence, so I was able to at least get a somewhat decent picture of the aircraft. 56506/N55CW is being restored to Berlin Airlift colors: it already has a USAF roundel and the beginnings of the Airlift C-54s' lightning bolt on the fuselage. The spraybars have been removed (Buffalo did that before it was sold off), but still has some of the green paint from its Buffalo days. I'm sorry that the museum was closed, but that just means I'll have to come back soon.

Maturing to an average length between 19 and 36 centimetres (7.5 and 14 in), with a maximum weight and height of approximately 1.7 kilograms (3.7 lb) and 76 centimetres (30 in) respectively in B. giganteus, giant isopods are a good example of deep-sea gigantism (cf. giant squid); most other isopods range in size from 1 to 5 centimetres (0.39 to 2.0 in). Their morphology resembles that of their terrestrial cousin, the woodlouse: their bodies are dorso-ventrally compressed, protected by a rigid, calcareous exoskeleton composed of overlapping segments. Like the woodlouse, they also possess the ability to curl up into a "ball", where only the tough shell is exposed. This provides protection. The first shell segment is fused to the head; the most posterior segments are often fused as well, forming a "caudal shield" over the shortened abdomen (pleon). The large eyes are compound with nearly 4,000 facets, sessile and spaced far apart on the head. There are two pairs of antennae.
The uniramous thoracic legs or pereiopods are arranged in seven pairs, the first of which are modified into maxillipeds to manipulate and bring food to the four sets of jaws. The abdomen has five segments called pleonites each with a pair of biramous pleopods; these are modified into natatory legs and rami, flat respiratory structures acting as gills. The isopods are a pale lilac in colour.

The average elevation of the province is 580 metres (1,900 ft). The north of the province is part of the so-called Golden Triangle, where the borders of Thailand, Laos and Burma converge, an area which prior to the rise of agricultural production of coffee, pineapple, coconuts, and banana plantations, was unsafe because of drug smuggling across the borders. The Mekong River forms the boundary with Laos, the Mae Sai and Ruak River with Burma. Through the town of Chiang Rai itself, flows the "Mae Kok" Kok River and south of it the Lao River, a tributary of the Kok.
Every day I head out the door near sundown and let the vastness of this flat terrain paint an uncluttered, majestic picture in the sky. I have NEVER caught another photographer making use of this area..are photos like this a cliche?

Ankarana National Reserve, near Antsiranana, northern Madagascar.
Ankarana Special Reserve is a protected area in northern Madagascar created in 1956. It is a small, partially vegetated plateau composed of 150-million-year-old middle Jurassic limestone. With an average annual rainfall of about 2,000 millimetres (79 in), the underlying rocks have been eroded to produce caves and feed subterranean rivers - a karst topography. The rugged relief and the dense vegetation have helped protect the region from human intrusion and exploitation.
Beginning in the 1960s, expatriate Frenchman Jean Duflos undertook a huge amount of exploration of the cave systems and subterranean rivers of the massif, much of it on his own or with visiting speleologists. Around 100 kilometres (62 miles) of cave passages within the massif have been mapped. La Grotte d'Andrafiabe, one of the most accessible caves, comprises at least 8 kilometres (5 miles) of horizontal passages. Indeed, the massif contains the longest cave systems in Madagascar, and probably in the whole of Africa.
This large underground network of caves and rivers is a home to 14 species of bats, as well as giant eels, endemic blind shrimps and crocodiles. Rock spires and dropping water contribute to the atmosphere.
The cave walls were covered in spiders - very big spiders - some with really strange webs and dangling cocoons.
Centuries ago in the course of the war between local Ankarana tribe and Merina tribe kings used to hide in the caves and some possibly died there. Locals strongly believe that their spirits still hover somewhere in the caves so loud noises are banned. Even menstruating women are not permitted to enter, according to the local fady or taboo. Our guide turned off his torch for a few minutes to allow us to feel the spirits ... it was a very powerful moment. We were also aware that there could be creatures that we could not see.

The Red-backed Fairywren (Malurus melanocephalus) is a species of passerine bird in the Maluridae family
Veldkenmerken.
The smallest member of the genus Malurus, the Red-backed Fairywren measures 11.5 cm (4½ in) and weighs between 5–10 g (0.18–0.35 oz), averaging around 8 g (0.21 oz). The 6 cm (2½ in) long tail is black in the breeding male, and brown in eclipse males, females and juvenile birds. Averaging 8.6 mm (0.3 in), the bill is relatively long, narrow and pointed and wider at the base. Wider than it is deep, the bill is similar in shape to those of other birds that feed by probing for or picking insects off their environs.
Like other fairywrens, the Red-backed Fairywren is notable for its marked sexual dimorphism; the male adopts full breeding plumage by the fourth year, later than all other fairywrens apart from its relative the White-winged Fairywren. The male in breeding plumage has a black head and body with striking red back and brown wings. At other times it has a brown upper body and white underparts. Some, mainly younger, males do remain in eclipse plumage while breeding. The female looks remarkably similar with a buff brown body and a yellowish spot under the eye. The female of this species differs from those of other fairy wren species in that it lacks a blue tint in the tail. Geographically, it follows Gloger's rule; female birds have whiter bellies and paler brown upperparts inland in sunnier climates. Juveniles of both sexes look very similar to females.
Geluid.
The typical song used by the Red-backed Fairywren to advertise its territory is similar to that of other fairy wrens, namely a reel made up of an introductory note followed by repeated short segments of song, starting weak and soft and ending high and shrill with several syllables. The call is mostly made by the male during mating season.Birds will communicate with one another while foraging with a soft ssst, barely audible further than 10–15 m (30–50 ft) away. The alarm call is a high-pitched zit.
Voorkomen.
The Red-backed Fairywren is endemic to Australia and can be seen along rivers and the coast from Cape Keraudren in northern Western Australia through the Kimberleys, Arnhem Land and the Gulf Country and into Cape York, with the Selwyn Range and upper reaches of the Flinders River as a southern limit. It is also found on the nearby offshore islands Groote Eylandt, Sir Edmund Pellew, Fraser, Melville and Bathurst Islands. It then occurs all the way down the east coast east of the Great Dividing Range to the Hunter River in New South Wales, preferring wet, grassy tropical or sub-tropical areas, with tall grasses such as bladygrass (Imperata cylindrica), species of Sorghum, and Eulalia. It is not a true migrant, although it may be locally nomadic due to the changes in vegetation, and may leave its territory after the breeding season. The species will retreat to fire-resistant cover at times of fire.
The Red-backed Fairywren avoids arid habitats, and is replaced to the south of its range by the White-winged Fairywren.
Gedrag
The Red-backed Fairywren is diurnal, and becomes active at dawn and again, in bursts, throughout the day. When not foraging, birds often shelter together. They roost side-by-side in dense cover as well and engage in mutual preening. The usual form of locomotion is hopping, with both feet leaving the ground and landing simultaneously. However, a bird may run when performing the rodent-run display. Its balance is assisted by a relatively long tail, which is usually held upright and is rarely still. The short, rounded wings provide good initial lift and are useful for short flights, though not for extended jaunts. Birds generally fly in a series of undulations for a maximum of 20 or 30 m (60–100 ft)
In dry tall grasslands in monsoonal areas, the change in vegetation may be so great due to either fires or wet season growth that birds may be more nomadic and change territories more than other fairywrens. They form more stable territories elsewhere, such as in coastal areas. Cooperative breeding is less common with this species than with other fairywrens; helper birds have been sporadically reported, but the Red-backed Fairywren has been little studied.
Both the male and female adult Red-backed Fairywren may utilise the rodent-run display to distract predators from nests with young birds. The head, neck and tail are lowered, the wings are held out and the feathers are fluffed as the bird runs rapidly and voices a continuous alarm call.
Voedsel.
Like other fairywrens, the Red-backed Fairywren is predominantly insectivorous; they eat a wide variety of insects, including beetles such as weevils, leaf-, jewel-, flea- and ground-beetles, bugs, grasshoppers, moths, wasps and cicadas. Insect larvae and eggs are eaten as well as spiders. Seeds and other plant material make up only a very small proportion of its diet. It can be found hunting for insects in leaf litter, shrubbery and on the edges of bodies of water, mostly in the morning and late afternoon. Adults of both sexes as well as helper birds feed the young.

A 4 shot average group shot at approx. 100 yards using a CZ 452 small barrel rifle with bulk (525 pack) federal 22LR 36grain ammo and a bushnell 10x tactical elite scope. Temps were approx. 45ºF with small gusts of wind off and on. Shot off a table using a bipod.

Chris Birdsell isn’t your average pub landlord. Along with running the Varsity pub in Harborne, Chris is chairman of the local “pub watch” which alerts police to incidents on the High Street, he’s on the committee for the Harborne Traders Association, Harborne Village Centre Partnership and on the committee for Harborne Carnival. He’ll know who to put you in touch with, and regularly opens up the pub for community events.
Harborne Village Centre Manager, Bob Flack, nominated Chris in the active citizen category for the Birmingham Local Hearts award, because he recognised the innovation he has for local projects and the ability to drive projects to their end. Chris recently started a local artists evening – allowing those in the community to showcase their work. He said he always has people coming into the pub asking for help, and often he will find ways to help the people help themselves – opening the pub in the evening for them to hold fundraising events and meetings, and putting them in touch with the right people.
Chris has been described as the eyes and ears of the community, and said his motivation has to be the people. Here’s his story.
