X-ray of a hand phantom and an ipod nano. Because we used the technique factors (average x-ray photon energy, number of photons) for a hand x-ray, the ipod is a little underexposed.

A poster for the short film coffee or Tea? For this poster the client wanted me to show the film had a fairy tale feel but that it was not an average tale. I thought the old school frog prince crossed out would be a fun way to show this off. Sadly the frog is not my picture.

The Paparazzi Bots is a series of five autonomous robots each standing at the height of the average human. Comprised of multiple microprocessors, cameras, sensors, code and robotic actuators on a custom-built rolling platform, they move at the speed of a walking human, avoiding walls and obstacles while using sensors to move toward humans. They seek one thing, which is to capture photos of people and to make these images available to the press and the world wide web as a statement of culture's obsession with the “celebrity image” and especially our own images. The flash autonomously goes off, capturing people’s photos and elevating them to “celebrity” in a kind of momentary anointing by the robots. The robots also become celebrities through their association to the “famous people” at the exhibition that are captured by the Paparazzi Bots.

Each autonomous robot can make the decision to take the photos of particular people, while ignoring other humans in the exhibition, based on things such as, whether or not the viewers are smiling or the shape of their smile. When the robots identify a person or group they will automatically adjust their focus and use a series of bright flashes to record that moment.

Surveillance technologies straddle a delicate balance that we have in contemporary culture, where we are all photographed without our knowledge by cell phones, hidden cameras and sometimes “celebritized”. This is a kind of modern baptism with the camera flash and the spectacle of being the focus of the camera becoming a kind of techno anointing.

This work explores ideas surrounding the shifting territories of self and machine and how machines can manipulate the other (us) in a grand co-evolutionary dance of emerging robot-human relations.

The recent emergence of social networks and their ability to connect people through software prompts via the world wide web is a prime example of the co-evolution of humans and their intelligent machines. The fact that the software prompts exploit our social needs for connectivity and social space is so easily exploited in this new critical juncture in our emerging machine human relations.

This camera can track your head and be set to take a photo if you smile mildly, medium-smile or pull-a-muscle smile. When set to smile mode, they do seem to prefer even smiles rather than crooked smiles so here the machine is making determinations about issues of "beauty". I have considered holding a robot beauty contest as an addition to this work.

Average Guys Exceptional Hair Tour, Chicago, Il, Fall 2010

The average annual rainfall over the HKH region (5 basins studied here) is approximately 880 mm, with variability of just 5% between years and high spatial variability. The highest rainfall amounts, accounting for more than 70% of the annual total, are received during the summer months with July being the wettest month. The pre-monsoon season receives approximately 16% of the annual total, with only 5% of annual precipitation falling in winter. December and January receive the least precipitation. On average, there are over 215 rainy days per year. There is considerable variation in the distribution of precipitation across the HKH region. Generally, precipitation is lower in the west than in the east, and lower in the north than in the south. The Tibetan plateau and the southern plains of the Indus basin are much dryer than the southeast. Over the past decades, increased monsoon precipitation has been observed over the high mountain belt of the Himalayas, particularly in the east. The greatest decrease in monsoon rainfall has been observed in the south in the Ganges and Indus basins. Seasonal changes are also being observed: winters are getting wetter over most of the central and southern portions of the five basins, and winter precipitation is decreasing over the northern areas of the five basins. While the number of extreme rainfall events appears to be decreasing, the intensity of each event (amount of rainfall) appears to be increasing, especially towards the western parts of the HKH. In summary, over the last few decades and across the region there has been no discernible trend (increase or decrease) in the amount of rainfall, although there has been considerable year-to-year variability.

Mike Petrucelli of The SouthBend Tribune did a little write-up on Average Betty! Mentioned alongside Cook's Illustrated and Epicurious, Mr. Petrucelli says, "One I always get a kick out of is called Average Betty. It's a little corny, but she always shows you how to easily whip up something tasty. And really, any food podcast that can take "Hot For Teacher" or The Hoff and relate them to food (luckily not in the same podcast), is worth a look. "

From Wikipedia: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_dipper

"The American dipper, also known as a water ouzel, is a stocky dark grey bird with a head sometimes tinged with brown, and white feathers on the eyelids that cause the eyes to flash white as the bird blinks. It is 16.5 cm long and weighs on average 46 g. It has long legs, and bobs its whole body up and down during pauses as it feeds on the bottom of fast-moving, rocky streams. It inhabits the mountainous regions of Central America and western North America from Panama to Alaska.

This species, like other dippers, is equipped with an extra eyelid called a "nictitating membrane" that allows it to see underwater, and scales that close its nostrils when submerged. Dippers also produce more oil than most birds, which may help keep them warmer when seeking food underwater."

And from Cornell's Lab of Ornithology:

"American Dippers can wade, swim, and dive either from the water or from the air, and can move rocks on the stream-bottom to get at food. They are mainly monogamous. Though some pairs stay together in winter, the dipper is generally a solitary bird; after the chicks’ fledging, parents often divide their brood and their territory and part ways."

The San Luis Reservoir very low in water, thanks to an ongoing drought and well below average rainfall this passed winter and spring. After many years passing by this reservoir along highway 152, this was probably the lowest/driest I've seen it! (Wednesday afternoon, August 7, 2013)

The massive San Luis Reservoir was to turn into a mud puddle by this August on the San Joaquin Valley's west side, maybe a historic low. The mud puddle would be a symbol of frustration in the nation's biggest farm water district, Westlands Water District, which depends on this unique California reservoir. For 1.8 million Santa Clara County residents who get water from here, the shortage threatens both water quality and supply. Its only source of water is the troubled Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta, where water pumping was restricted in winter to protect dying fish. There was a lot less water sent to San Luis this year. The 2 million acre-foot San Luis Reservoir was about 40% of average for mid-June. Each 326,000-gallon acre-foot is becoming more precious every day. San Luis has been dropping like a rock since April. Located in the dry, grassy hills west of Los Banos, San Luis is the country's largest reservoir without a natural stream to feed it. River water from the delta is sent about 70 miles through canals to form this artificial lake used by both the federal and state water projects. For motorists on Highway 152, the route between the San Joaquin Valley and the coast, it is a major landmark, including the reservoir on one side of the roadway and O'Neill Forebay on the other. The reservoir had long been considered a chance to slow west Valley agriculture's chronic overdrafting of the underground water, which continues today and increases in dry years, such as this one. But farm water leaders say this year's problem is more than a dry winter. The reservoir might be at a record low in August (which was this month…).

Event Details for: Price Crosses 50-Day Moving Average

Tells Me: The price is generally in an established trend (bullish or bearish) for the time horizon represented by the moving average period (21, 50 or 200 bars). Moving averages are used to smooth out the volatility or "noise" in the price series, to make it easier to discover the underlying trend. By plotting the average price over the last several bars, the line is less "jerky" than plotting the actual prices. A bullish event is generated when the price crosses above the moving average, and in this state, the price is likely in an established uptrend. The opposite is true when the price crosses below the moving average, triggered a bearish event.

Luino ( Lüìn in Varese dialect ), called Luvino until 1889, is an Italian municipality of 14,185 inhabitants in the province of Varese in Lombardy . The city, which overlooks the eastern shore of Lake Maggiore or Verbano, also nicknamed "Costa Fiorita", is best known for hosting a well-known market every Wednesday, which involves the entire city center and is a tourist attraction.

It is an important center for tourism and the economy of the upper Varese area. It borders Switzerland to the east , via the Fornasette pass.

Physical geography

Territory

The territory of the municipality is approximately 220 meters above sea level . It is about 23 km from Varese , the capital of the province of the same name to which the municipality belongs.

Climate

The climate of Luino, like that of the entire northern basin of Lake Maggiore , is extremely rainy. The average annual rainfall is between 1800 and 2500 mm in the municipal area. These precipitation values are approximately double those recorded in the city of Milan and triple the averages of the other locations in the Po Valley . Solar radiation is one of the lowest in Italy, with an average of just 4736 MJ/m 2 .

History

Formerly an ancient medieval village of Roman origin, (3rd century necropolises have been found where the railway station is now located, which in the past had great importance: before the birth of the Como-Chiasso axis, it was, in fact, an obligatory passage for the Gotthard ). Luino is mentioned for the first time in official documentation dating back to 1169 with the name of Luvino , which derives from the proper name Luvinum and remained until the royal decree of 27 January 1889, No. 5932, made the current name official .

It is a town located a few kilometers from the Swiss border, on the pre-Alpine slopes surrounding Lake Maggiore . Ernest Hemingway writes in A Farewell to Arms :

«I saw a wedge-shaped gap in the mountains on the other bank and thought it must be Luino»

During the Middle Ages it was the subject of contention between powerful Milanese and Como families, yet still managed to defend its freedom and municipal autonomy. It was occupied in 1512 by the Swiss, but was then reconquered again by the Sforza in 1515. Charles V assigned it the market right in 1541 , alternating with that of Maccagno which until then had enjoyed exclusivity; the concession was confirmed in 1786 and saw Luino winning over Laveno who aspired to obtain the same prerogative. The market is currently held, and has been for many years, on Wednesday of each week. In 1821 the City Council was elected for the first time .

In 1848 the Piedmontese patriots landed here to make the town rise up against foreign occupation and Garibaldi fought against the Austrians in Luina. In 1867, the city dedicated its first Italian monument to the Nice general, when he was, among other things, still alive.

In 1882 the international railway line was inaugurated which connected Luino to Bellinzona , capital of the Canton of Ticino . The local station therefore became an international transit point, especially for goods coming down from Central Europe , through the San Gottardo railway tunnel , to head to the port of Genoa . The improvement of connections (although never fully implemented in the face of the many projects formulated) promoted, in the second half of the nineteenth century, a lively and prolific industrialization in the Luinese area.

Symbols

The coat of arms and the banner were granted by decree of the President of the Republic of 27 April 1970.

Luino is an archaeological area. In fact, finds from the Bronze Age have been found here.

Cinema

Luino is the city where Alberto Lattuada filmed Come and have coffee... with us , and Marco Vicario filmed some scenes from The Astrakhan Coat , films based on two novels by Piero Chiara , a writer born in Luino.

In the summer of 2013 Luino was the main location of the film Il pretore directed by Giulio Base. The cast includes Francesco Pannofino , Sarah Maestri (from Luina), Eliana Miglio (also from Luino), Mattia Zaccaro Garau , Max Cavallari and Debora Caprioglio . The magistrate's office, in particular, was set up in the Town Hall. A peculiarity of the film was the massive involvement of the citizens: many people from Luino were in fact recruited as extras in the film released in 2014. The first screening of the film was made in Rome on 2 April 2014 while the following day the film was screened for first time at the Cinema Sociale of Luino with the presence of the cast and director.

Cross-border

The proximity to the Italian-Swiss border means that Luino is strongly affected by cross-border travel, that is, by the presence of Italian workers who travel to Switzerland every day for work.

Industry

Between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th, Luino was a highly industrialized city, especially in the textile sector, facilitated by the great availability of water. There were many entrepreneurs, both Italian and Swiss, who chose to found factories and factories in the Luino area.

Towards the end of the 20th century the industry entered a crisis: the industrial areas were mostly abandoned and their redevelopment process began in the third millennium.

Finance

The industrial success was also at the basis of the birth, in 1883 , of the Banca Popolare di Luino (which became Banca Popolare di Luino e di Varese in 1941 ), which became one of the most powerful and branched credit institutions in north-western Lombardy. "La Luino", as it was also known, was taken over by Banca Popolare Commercio e Industria in 1996 and in 2003 it ceased to exist as an autonomous entity; the sign definitively disappeared in 2007 to make room for UBI Banca .

Services

As regards the sector of public and private services, Luino is the main point of reference for the surrounding valleys (station, banks, hospital, municipality, revenue agency, etc.)

Tourism

The lakeside location makes Luino a popular tourist destination, with particularly strong flows from Switzerland and the German-speaking area in general. Given the limited capacity of accommodation facilities, tourism is essentially entrusted to the spontaneous market of second homes.

Infrastructure and transport

Roads

The main road routes of Luino are the state road 394 of Verbano Orientale , the state road 344 towards Porto Ceresio-Luino and the provincial road 69 of Santa Caterina.

Railways

The Luino station , located on the Novara–Pino line , functions as a border stop between Italy and Switzerland : on its grounds the voltage change of the overhead contact line takes place (from the Italian 3 kV DC to the Swiss 15 kV AC) and is equipped with customs offices . Regional connections operated by Trenord operate there as part of the service contract stipulated with the Lombardy Region , as well as international suburban trains operated by TILO on Italian-Swiss routes.

The Colmegna station also falls within the municipal territory , serving the hamlet of the same name .

In the past Luino represented the northwestern terminus of the narrow gauge railways for Ponte Tresa and Varese , which stopped at the stations of Luino Lago , located near the pier, and Luino Scalo .

Lake transport

The Luino pier connects many locations with boats from the Navigazione Lago Maggiore company, including on the Piedmont side of Lake Maggiore. Direct connections are more frequent in the period March-October, and lead to the towns of Cannero Riviera , Cannobio , Locarno and Stresa .

Urban mobility

The city has a system of urban, interurban and international buses with neighboring Switzerland. Urban and interurban bus services are managed by the company Autolinee Varesine Srl on behalf of the CTPI (Consorzio Trasporti Pubblici dell'Insubria)

Administration

Luino obtained the title of city in 1969, following a decree from the President of the Republic. From 1928 to 1948, Germignaga was also part of the territory of the municipality, following the municipal territorial restructuring carried out in the fascist period , as already in the Napoleonic era from 1809 to 1815. In 1955 Luino absorbed the hamlet of Colmegna (which in the eighteenth century constituted the municipality of Colmegna with Casneda) from the municipality of Maccagno and in 1928 the autonomous municipalities of Brezzo di Bedero (which later regained its autonomy) and Voldomino (already annexed in the Napoleonic era). As regards the political orientation of the municipal administration, in the so-called First Italian Republic Luino was essentially governed by centrist councils [14] , whose last exponent was the liberal Pietro Astini, in office between 1993 and 1995 and subsequently lapsed of the resignation of the majority of municipal councilors. The so-called Second Republic , which de facto began with the 1996 elections , saw various civic lists alternate in the municipality, more or less all characterized by rather clear links with political parties: a mandate with a centre-left council was followed in 2000 by the beginning of the hegemony of the centre-right , with the mayors Gianercole Mentasti and Andrea Pellicini re-elected for two consecutive terms each [15] . The center-left then managed to regain the municipality in 2020 , when Enrico Bianchi's civic list overtook the candidates of the outgoing administration, who overall had the majority in the vote count, but were penalized for having presented themselves (following internal struggles) divided into two formations

Ankarana National Reserve, near Antsiranana, northern Madagascar.

Ankarana Special Reserve is a protected area in northern Madagascar created in 1956. It is a small, partially vegetated plateau composed of 150-million-year-old middle Jurassic limestone. With an average annual rainfall of about 2,000 millimetres (79 in), the underlying rocks have been eroded to produce caves and feed subterranean rivers - a karst topography. The rugged relief and the dense vegetation have helped protect the region from human intrusion and exploitation.

The sportive lemurs are the medium-sized primates that make up the family Lepilemuridae. The family consists of only one extant genus, Lepilemur. They are closely related to the other lemurs and exclusively live on the island of Madagascar. For a time, this family was named Megaladapidae, but the current name was given precedence since the extinct genus Megaladapis was removed from the family.

Sportive lemurs are strictly nocturnal and predominantly arboreal, moving among the trees with long jumps powered by their strong hind legs. On the ground, they hop similarly to the kangaroo. During the day they hide in leafy covering or tree hollows. Sportive lemurs are mostly solitary and defend their territory against same sex intruders. The territories of males and females can overlap.

They are mainly herbivores and their diet consists predominantly of leaves.

Birthing happens between September and December after a gestation of 120 to 150 days, and is usually of a single young which is often reared in a nest in a tree hollow. At about four months the juveniles are weaned but remain with their mother up to an age of one year. At about 18 months they are fully mature, and live to be about eight years old.

The Ankarana sportive lemur (Lepilemur ankaranensis), or Ankarana weasel lemur, is a sportive lemur endemic to Madagascar. It is one of the smaller sportive lemurs. The Ankarana sportive lemur is found in northern Madagascar, living in dry lowland forests in Ankarana, Andrafiamena and Analamerana, and in moist montane forest of Montagne d'Ambre.

Average White Band - 22 July 2012 - The Queen's Hall, Edinburgh

If this doesn't depict a summers' evening, then I don't know what does.

Biggest limitation of the camera on smartphones is their lack of exposure controls and optical zoom. Some apps allow you to eek some creative control out of the smartphone cameras, but in the end the plastic lenses and tiny sensors still don't match up to even the cheapest dedicated compact point and shoot cameras.

Example: iPhone has a 1/3.2 " sensor which is considerably smaller than your average entry level point and shoot with a sensor size of 1/2.3" such as that of the Canon Elph series.

Snapped with iPhone 4 and cropped in for tighter composition.

She's just as smart and beautiful in real life... and no, Jill doesn't work at a museum...
