Hong Kong Transport - Taxis

The Hong Kong Taxi Culture

There are 18,163 Taxis (Red, Green & Blue) registered in Hong Kong (Source - The Transport Department, Hong Kong Government) and the industry is very heavily regulated.

☛ 15,250 Red Taxis or Urban Taxis

☛ 2,838 Green Taxis or New Territories Taxis

☛ 75 Blue Taxis or Lantau Taxis

Payment for a ride is still mainly in CASH in HK$, cashless payment ie credit cards, debit cards and Octopus cards, phone apps and such are finally being accepted for Taxi payment.

Approximately 72% of Taxis are licenced for 4 passengers and 28% are licenced for 5 passengers and within a few years 5 passenger Taxis will be probably be phased out, Hong Kong people love Uber as many of the cars are what we call the 7 seaters, big and quite luxurious Toyota‛s and Nissan‛s that comfortably hold 6 passengers ideal for groups and families | for the record Uber currently operates illegally in Hong Kong since 2014 and have tacit approval from the Government.

A major review and overhaul of the Taxi Industry is currently in progress which may see Uber becoming legal as well as other ride hailing services.

The current cost of a Red (Urban) Taxi Licence fluctuates between HK$3,500,000 | US$449,000 and HK$4,500,000 | US$577,000 with an average of roughly HK$4,100,000 | US$526,000 over a 12 month period. This figure can fluctuate as people speculate on these! At one stage not too long ago the price hit HK$7,020,000 or US$900,000 and then Uber arrived in Hong Kong. Do the math US$615,000 x 18,163 licences - you can understand why the owners of Taxis do not want any competition from the likes of Uber and other ride hailing companies.

Current Taxis are mainly Toyota, Nissan or Ford, mainly LPG or Hybrids, full EV vehicles are now being introduced again and are gaining in popularity.

Bundi is a city with 101,000 inhabitants (2011) in the Hadoti region of Rajasthan state in northwest India. It is of particular architectural note for its ornate forts, palaces, and stepwell reservoirs known as baoris. It is the administrative headquarters of Bundi District.

GEOGRAPHY

The town of Bundi is situated 35 km from Kota and 210 km from Jaipur. It is located at 25.44°N 75.64°E and an average elevation of 268 metres. The city lies near a narrow gorge, and is surrounded on three sides by hills of the Aravalli Range. A substantial wall with four gateways encircles the city. The town of Indragarh and nearby places are famous for the renowned temples of Bijasan Mata and Kamleshwar. The Indargarh step well is considered as one of the most attractive places in the Bundi district, especially during the rainy season.

HISTORY

In ancient times, the area around Bundi was apparently inhabited by various local tribes. Bundi and the eponymous princely state are said to derive their names from a former Meena tribe man called Bunda Meena. Bundi was previously called “Bunda-Ka-Nal", Nal meaning “narrow ways”. Later the region was governed by Rao Deva Hada, who took over Bundi from Jaita Meena in 1342, and established a princely state Bundi, renaming the surrounding area called Hadoti, the land of great Hada Rajputs.

ATTRACTIONS

The Taragarh Fort, or 'Star Fort' is the most impressive of the city's structures. It was constructed in AD 1354 upon the top of steep hillside overlooking the city. The largest of its battlements is the 16th century bastion known as the Bhim Burj, on which was once mounted a particularly large cannon called Garbh Gunjam, or 'Thunder from the Womb'. The fort is a popular tourist viewpoint of the city below. The fort contains three tanks which never dry up. The technique with which they were built has been long since lost but the tanks survive as a testament to the advanced methods of construction and engineering in medieval India.

The Bundi Palace is situated on the hillside adjacent to the Taragarh Fort and is notable for its lavish traditional murals and frescoes. The Chitrashala (picture gallery) of the palace is open to the general public.

The largest of Bundi's baoris or stepwells is the intricately carved Raniji ki Baori. Some 46 m deep, it was built in 1699 by Rani Nathavatji. The steps built into the sides of the water-well made water accessible even when at a very low level. The baori is one of the largest examples of its kind in Rajasthan.

The Nawal Sagar is a large square-shaped artificial lake in the centre of Bundi containing many small islets. A temple dedicated to Varuna, the vedic god of water, stands half-submerged in the middle of the lake. the lake feeds the numerous bavdis in the old city by creating an artificial water table.

The Nagar Sagar twin step wells are identical step wells crafted in pristine masonry on either side of the main spine of Bundi town. The kunds (pools) are currently full of waste from the ancient vegetable market in the vicinity.

The Dabhai Kund also known as the jail kund, is the largest of the kunds in Bundi. Though slightly overgrown, it is well worth a visit for the spectacular carvings on the numerous steps leading down to the water level.

THE STEPWELLS

There are over 50 stepwells in Bundi, of which only a handful have been maintained. They used to be the only source of water for the town until a piped water system was introduced. After that these stepwells were abandoned and the monuments fell into disrepair. Most of the former stepwells inside the town have become garbage dumps, and are slipping out of the public consciousness.

Gullfoss (English: Golden Falls) is a waterfall located in the canyon of Hvítá river in southwest Iceland.

Gullfoss is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the country. The wide Hvítá rushes southward. About a kilometer above the falls it turns sharply to the left and flows down into a wide curved three-step "staircase" and then abruptly plunges in two stages (11 m and 21 m) into a crevice 32 m (105 ft) deep. The crevice, about 20 m (60 ft) wide, and 2.5 km in length, is at right angles to the flow of the river. The average amount of water running over this waterfall is 140 m³/s in the summertime and 80 m³/s in the wintertime. The highest flood measured was 2000 m³/s.

SPECS average speed camera systems utilises a video system with Automatic Number Plate Reading (ANPR) digital technology. These cameras are each fitted with infra red illuminators, fitted on gantries above the road, so they can work day or night.

Each speed camera records a date and time stamp. Then, by ANPR, the computer can work out your average speed between the cameras with photographic evidence that you were speeding between the cameras.

These speed cameras also record your number plate and issue you a speeding ticket if you were speeding along the average speed controlled stretch of road.

Mostly loathed by drivers they can be seen mostly on Dual Carriageways or Motorways - or Nottinghamshire who use them extensively.

They are seen as 'policing on the cheap' as no human intervention is needed. The downside for the motorist is that they are unaware that they has broken the speed limit until a fine arrives through the post some days or weeks later.

Of course, the camera doesnt know who was driving so the owner of the car gets the ticket.

The ocean sunfish, Mola mola, or common mola, is the heaviest known bony fish in the world. It has an average adult weight of 1 tonne (2,200 lbs). The species is native to tropical and temperate waters around the globe. It resembles a fish head without a tail, and its main body is flattened laterally. Sunfish can be as tall as they are long when their dorsal and ventral fins are extended.

Sunfish live on a diet that consists mainly of jellyfish. Because this diet is nutritionally poor, they consume large amounts in order to develop and maintain their great bulk. Females of the species can produce more eggs than any other known vertebrate. Sunfish fry resemble miniature pufferfish, with large pectoral fins, a tail fin and body spines uncharacteristic of adult sunfish.

Adult sunfish are vulnerable to few natural predators, but sea lions, orcas and sharks will consume them. Among humans, sunfish are considered a delicacy in some parts of the world, including Japan, the Korean peninsula and Taiwan, but sale of their flesh is banned in the European Union. Sunfish are frequently, though accidentally, caught in gillnets, and are also vulnerable to harm or death from encounters with floating trash, such as plastic bags.

A member of the order Tetraodontiformes, which also includes pufferfish, porcupinefish and filefish, the sunfish shares many traits common to members of this order. It was originally classified as Tetraodon mola under the pufferfish genus, but it has since been given its own genus, Mola, with two species under it. The ocean sunfish, Mola mola, is the type species of the genus.

Plane and simple.

Carpobrotus acinaciformis (L.) L. Bo., syn.: Mesembryanthemum acinaciformis

Family: Aizoaceae Martinov

EN: Ice Plant, Hottentotsfig, Elands Sourfig, Sally-my-handsome, DE: Hottentottenfeige, Hottentot Fig

Slo: zmajev zob, mačji krempelj, CR: sabljasti karpobrot

Date: April 26. 2006

Lat.: 44.37505 Long.: 14.78157

Code: Bot_0117/2006_DSC0243

Habitat: Semiruderal place, abandoned garden, flat terrain, calcareous, stony ground; open, sunny, dry location; elevation 20 m (65 feet); average annual precipitation around 900 mm; average temperature 13-15 °C; Mediterranean phytogeographical region.

Substratum: soil.

Location: Croatia, Zadar region, Zadar Archipelago, Olib Island, southeast outskirts of the village of Olib.

Comment (related to the Flickr album Carpobrotus acinaciformis): Carpobrotus acinaciformis is a sprawling succulent with large, eye-catching, up to 15 cm diameter, pink-purple flowers. Its leaves are thick, filled with water-storage tissue, and shaped like a saber. In cross-section, they are sharply triangular. It is native to South Africa. The species has been introduced to all five continents, where it now exists as an invasive or naturalized plant, including large parts of southern Europe and the UK. The plant prefers warm conditions but is somewhat resistant to frost. It can survive minimum temperatures down to about -1 or -2 °C. Nevertheless, it remains primarily limited to the Mediterranean basin and the UK in Europe.

This rapidly growing species is a harmful invasive plant capable of wiping out all native vegetation in large areas, sometimes nearly destroying entire islands. However, it remains popular in horticulture due to its attractive blooms and ability to prevent soil erosion. South African Aizoaceae have been grown in Europe for decorative purposes since the early seventeenth century. They are low-maintenance and easy to grow because of their high drought tolerance and ability to thrive in nutrient-poor soils. The only essential requirement for their growth is ample sunlight.

Taxonomically, these plants are challenging. Aside from several other species in this genus in South Africa, Carpobrotus acinaciformis (L.) L. Bo. and Carpobrotus edulis (L.) N.E.Br. subsp. edulis are the most common taxa found in Europe today. Both have similar environmental needs and often grow together. However, telling the two species apart remains difficult. Different authors use different taxonomies and defining traits in their keys. According to Campoy et al. 2018 (Ref.: 8), Carpobrotus edulis has yellow flowers (though var. rubescens has purple-red flowers), leaves are slightly curved, grass-green with a roughly equilateral triangular cross-section, stamens are yellow, and the ovary has 9 to 11 locules according to Ref. 8, and 10 to 14 locules according to Ref. 6. Carpobrotus acinaciformis has rose-purple flowers, leaves are glaucous (covered with a waxy bloom giving them a bluish hue), with an isosceles triangular cross-section, and are scimitar-shaped (sword-like with a curved blade). Stamens are purple, and the ovary has 12 to 16 locules (Ref. 8).

The plants in this post have rose-purple petals, grass-green leaves (with a slight bluish tint when young), and light orange-purple stamens. The leaf shape appears to be somewhere between Carpobrotus edulis and Carpobrotus acinaciformis. Some leaves are lightly curved, while others are distinctly sword-like, and their cross-sections range between isosceles and equilateral triangles. The number of loculi is around 12 or 13. This matches Carpobrotus acinaciformis according to Ref. 8, but also fits Carpobrotus edulis (L.) N.E.Br. ssp. edulis var. rubescens according to Ref. 6. Therefore, naming these plants in my photos is challenging. After consulting my botanical friends from Croatia, we decided to name them Carpobrotus acinaciformis. This also aligns with the checklist for Olib Island published in 2016 by Milović et al. 2016 (Ref. 7). It is also possible that these are hybrids of both taxa, which have been reported from South Africa and Europe (Ref. 8). Carpobrotus edulis has not yet been found on Olib Island, but the Flora Croatica Database (FCD) (Ref. 9) states it exists on the nearby island of Silba, just a few kilometers away. Hybrid swarms between Carpobrotus edulis and Carpobrotus acinaciformis are also known. For example, they have been extensively studied in France (Ref. 5).

Be that as it may, the taxonomic identity of both Carpobrotus species in Europe and the Mediterranean has long been debated without a generally accepted conclusion, and there are several taxonomic uncertainties in the genus (Ref.: 9).

Female Western Green Lizard (Lacerta bilineata). reaches an average length (excluding tail) of about 13 centimetres (5.1 in), with a maximum of 40 centimetres (16 in), including tail. The tail may reach up to twice the body length. The average weight is about 35 grams. The body is bright green. The head is bigger in males than in females, and the males often show a blue throat. Juveniles are almost brown, with a yellowish belly and two to four pale, longitudinal lines along the flanks. Sub-adults also have these lines, together with several small brown spots on their backs. These lizards are territorial animals. They feed on arthropods, mainly large insects. They attain sexual maturity at around two years, when they are about 8 cm long (excluding tail). The males fight each other, especially during the mating period, when they are very aggressive towards rivals. The mating ritual is precise, and starts with a bite to the base of the female's tail. The females lay 6 to 25 eggs in a humid and warm site, such as in a decomposing log. The average life span of this species is about 15 years. Photo by Nick Dobbs, Southborne 08-05-16. Bundi is a city with 104,457 101,000 inhabitants (2011) in the Hadoti region of Rajasthan state in northwest India.

DEMOGRAPHICS

In the 2001 Indian census, Bundi had a population of 88,312. Males constitute 53% of the population and females 47%. Bundi has an average literacy rate of 67%, higher than the national average of 59.5%; with male literacy of 75% and female literacy of 57%. 14% of the population is under 6 years of age. In the 2011 Indian census Bundi has a population of 104,457 people.

MUGHAL ERA

Rao Surjan (1554–85) given Ranthambore Fort to Akbar in 1533. He was subsequently rewarded by Akbar with additional territory which expanded his kingdom. Both he and his successors entered the service of the Mughals and became one of their closest allies. From this time the rulers of Bundi bore the title of "Rao Raja".

One of the most notable rulers was Rao Ratan Singh Hada (1607–31) who saw service during the reign of the Emperor Jahangir. When Mughal Prince Khurram rebelled against his father, and gained the support of 22 Rajput princes, Rattan Singh stayed loyal to Jahangir. He defeated Prince Khurram at the battle of Burhanpur during which two of his sons were badly wounded. As a reward for his service Jahangir gave Ratan Singh many honours. With his 14 year old son Madho Singh having proven himself during the suppression of the rebellion as a courageous warrior Ratan Singh carved out of Bundi in 1580 sufficient land to create for Madho Singh the independent principality of Kota. Part of Kota was later used to create the separate Jhalawar State in 1838. Despite the loss of land to the new kingdom Ratan Singh retained sufficient territory and revenues to begin construction of the Garh palace.

Rao Chhattra Sal (1632–58) built the temple of Keshavarao at Patan and Chattra Mahal at Bundi. He saw service with the Mughal forces in the Deccan and was trusted by Dara Shikoh with governorship of Delhi, a rare privilege for a Rajput. He remained loyal to Shah Jahan and Dara Shikoh during the rebellion of Aurangzeb despite many temptations and died fighting at the head of his troops at the battle of Samurgarh in 1658 along with his youngest son Bharat Singh. Rao Bhao Singh (1658–78) the eldest son of Chhattar Sal succeeded his father to the throne of Bundi. When after the defeat of Dara Shikoh and his imprisonment of Shah Jahan, Aurangzeb became the Mughul emperor he dispatched troop under the command of Atmaram Gaur and Barh Singh Bundela to conquer Bundi. When they failed Aurangzeb made peace with Bhao Singh. Bhao Singh became sufficiently reconciled to Aurangzeb that he fought for him against Shivaji and at one time served as governor of Aurangabad. When his own son died during his lifetime he adopted Kishan Singh, the son of his brother Bhim Singh. When Kishan Singh too died early his 15 year old son Anirudh Singh (1682 to 1696) succeeded Bhao Singh on the throne.

Anirudh Singh served Aurangzeb in the Deccan and in the northwest under Prince Muazzam where he died. He was succeed by his eldest son Budha Singh, whose service to Muazzam (later Emperor Bahadur Shah I) in the war of succession to the Mughul throne saw the Bundi become dominate over Kota those ruler had backed the losing side.

During the reign of Rao Budh Singh (1696 to 1735) despite him being married to the sister of Jai Singh II of Jaipur, a bitter feud broke out between Bundi and the Kachwaha rulers of Amber (later called Jaipur) which led to him being expelled from his kingdom by surprise attack by the Kachwaha forces in 1702. He regained and lost his kingdom four times before he died in exile while Jaipur and Kota annexed large portion of his territory. It wasn’t until 1739 before the Bundi rulers were able to regain control of their kingdom after enlisting the aid of the Maratha general Malhar Rao Holkar who kept the estate of Patan for his services.

Relations became uneasy with Mewar after Prince Ajit Singh the heir to the Bundi throne killed Rana Ari Singh of Udaipur during the annual Aheria (Bundi’s ritual spring hunt) in 1773. Through claimed to be an accident Mewar historical records consider that it was an assassination which removed an unpopular ruler.

According to an ancient prophecy made by a dying sati it was said that if the rulers of Bundi and Mewar should ever meet at the event one of the two would die. According to legend, over the centuries such a meeting took place four times and on each occasion one of the rulers was killed by the other. Mewar sources indicate that there was only one other occasion when a Mewar ruler died when in 1531 Maharana Ratan Singh II of Mewar, accompanied Prince Surajmal of Bundi on a hunt. The two men despised each other. During the hunt the Maharana attacked Prince Surajmal which ended with both dying within minutes of each other.

BRITISH ERA

In 1804 Rao Raja Bishan Singh (1773–1821) gave valuable assistance to Colonel Monson in his disastrous retreat before Holkar, in revenge for which the Maratha Empire and Pindaris continually ravaged his state and forced the kingdom to pay tribute up to 1817 This led to Bishan Singh signing a subsidiary alliance with the British East India Company on 10 February 1818, which bought him under its protection. Bishan Singh was responsible for the creation of the pleasure palace of Sukh Niwas on the outskirts of Bundi.

Bishan Singh when dying of cholera entrusted James Tod with guardianship of his 11-year old son, Ram Singh. Maharao Raja Ram Singh (1821–89) grew up to be a much respected ruler who initiated economic and administrative reforms as well as establishing schools for the teaching of Sanskrit. On the throne for 68 years he was described as a grand specimen of the Rajput gentleman and "the most conservative prince in conservative Rajputana." His rule was popular and beneficial; and though during the mutiny of 1857 his attitude was equivocal, he continued to enjoy the confidence of the British, being created G.C.S.I. and a counsellor of the empire in 1877 and C.I.E. in 1878. He was succeeded by his adopted son Raghubir Singh (1889–1927), who was made a K.C.S.I. in 1897 and a G.C.I.E. in 1901. His reign was blighted by two disastrous famines which despite his best attempts to alleviated saw the population of his kingdom reduced from some 258,000 to 171,000 by 1901 due to death and immigration. Raghubir Singh supported the British during the World War I.[citation needed]

Maharao Bahadur Singh (1945–77) also supported the British and served in the Burma campaign where he earned the Military Cross for his gallantry before succeeding to the throne. He was a guest at the 1947 wedding of Princess Elizabeth and Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.

ACCESSION TO INDIA

At the time of the partition of India in 1947, the British abandoned their suzerainty over the princely states, which were left to decide whether to remain independent or to accede to the newly independent Dominion of India or to Pakistan. The ruler of the state of Bundi decided to accede to India, which later became the Union of India. This brought the internal affairs of Bundi under the control of Delhi.

COAT OF ARMS

Bundi’s coat of arms is a shield depicting Garuda, the mount of Vishnu, flanked by winged griffins. The shield is flanked by bulls representing dharma or righteousness; it is crowned by a warrior emerging from flames, signifying the creation-legend of the ruling Chauhan clan, which was supposedly created from fire.

TOURIST ATTRACTIONS

- The Taragarh Fort, or 'Star Fort' is the most impressive of the city's structures.

- The Bundi Palace is situated on the hillside adjacent to the Taragarh Fort and is notable for its lavish traditional murals and frescoes. The Chitrashala (picture gallery) of the palace is open to the general public.

- The largest of Bundi's baoris or stepwells is the intricately carved Raniji ki Baori. Some 46 m deep, it was built in 1699 by Rani Nathavatji. The steps built into the sides of the water-well made water accessible even when at a very low level. The baori is one of the largest examples of its kind in Rajasthan.

- The Nawal Sagar is a large square-shaped artificial lake in the centre of Bundi containing many small islets. A temple dedicated to Varuna, the vedic god of water, stands half-submerged in the middle of the lake. the lake feeds the numerous bavdis in the old city by creating an artificial water table.

- The Nagar Sagar twin step wells are identical step wells crafted in pristine masonry on either side of the main spine of Bundi town. The kunds (pools) are currently full of waste from the ancient vegetable market in the vicinity.

- The Dabhai Kund also known as the jail kund, is the largest of the kunds in Bundi.

Comparison of Average Age of Woman Giving Birth in Highly Developed world, Developed world, and Developing world

Rock n' Ropes and is rated as one of the top adventure activities available in New Zealand.

An average degree of unfitness and a genuine fear of heights is quite acceptable. Hesitant participants are slowly worked up to the height, this builds confidence and allows participants to complete activities which many think initially would not be possible. The tremendous sense of personal achievement, camaraderie, fun and enjoyment experienced often far exceeds participants expectations.

It was 59 AUS for the half day. Their WWW is here. It was a great day. Even though I have skydived, bungeed etc. I hate heights. I hate the idea of falling. That's why I like to face those fears through adventure sports. This was scarier than bungee etc. We climbed 7 different situations.

They included

Two Wire Bridge

Approximately 10 meters above the ground, you simply traverse along two wires. A great ropes course starter.

Burma Bridge

After climbing the pole you simply stroll across the cable while holding on to the ropes

Rickety Bridge

With nothing to hold onto, you walk or shuffle across the bridge before repeating the exercise in reverse.

High Log

This one often seems impossible. You walk across the log (and it's not flat on top) before again reversing back along.

Heebie Jeebie

You traverse along a foot cable using two diagonal ropes for support. Technique is the essence to the success on this one.

Giant Trapeze

The ultimate head trip and a true leap of faith. Climb the 13 metre pole, stand on top (nothing to hold on to) before leaping forward to grab a trapeze two metres out in front of you.

Giant Swing

The Giant Swing is exactly what it says and more.

An experience you won't forget.

Multi Vine

You'll love or hate this one. Traverse the foot cable with the aid of just a few dangling vines for support.

They were all hard. I thought I would never do the High Log especially walking backwards but I managed them all even though I was S*^& scared all the time.

This is an average sized penguin with a full grown weight of no more than 13 pounds. When they mature they will develop a black breast band. It will extend all the way down to the thigh region. They only have one band around their neck which is an easy way to tell them from the Magellanic Penguins that live in close proximity to them.

The Humboldt Penguin lives in South America along the Pacific Coast. It is found in both Chile and Peru. They enjoy the warmer climate compared to many other types of penguins out there. They live on the rocky areas around the shores.

Due to the warm temperatures where the Humboldt Penguins live, they don’t engage in the migration process. The physical appearance of these penguins is very much the same for both the males and females. It is from observing their behaviors though that they are able to be distinguished from each other.

Both sexes are very social within their colony. They have intricate sounds for communication that researchers still have to learn a great deal about. It through sight and sound that they are able to recognize each other as independent beings. The entire colony works together in order to offer protection from their enemies.

You may be surprised to discover how easily the Humboldt Penguin is able to glide through the water. They can move at a speed of up to 20 miles per hour. This is how they go about feeding on small fish and krill that live in the water. They don’t chew their food, instead the swallow it quickly.

When it comes to reproduction, the Humboldt Penguin can take part in this activity any time of the year. Generally, the more food that they have available the more they will engage in it. When food is scarce they won’t reproduce which is why there are concerns over dropping food sources because it can lead to even more of a reduction in their overall numbers.

They reach maturity to be able to reproduce from 2 to 7 years of age. The females will lay eggs in nests or burrows to protect them from predators. They can lay up to three eggs at a time. Both the male and the female take turns keeping the eggs warm until they hatch. It takes approximately 40 days for them to be born. If food is scarce then only the largest of the offspring will be fed and the others left to die.

This Brings an End to American Speedfest8 at Brands Hatch for

the 2021 Season. Another Year of Hight Speed High Action and Adrenalin Filled American Racing. Congratulations to all of the Race Winners and Participants in this Years Speedfest and I look forward to Seeing you all do Battle Again Next Year. Until then........GO BIG OR GO HOME.

Ten Vikings, five blue-bearded trawlerfolk, seven goslings , ten strategically placed coconuts, two dragon's heads and an inflatable monkey may sound like the contents of the average ten year old's toy box (maybe not the coconuts)... but in this case they were the signs that again the North East Skiffs were in town. Joined by good friends from north of the border (apologies if the staged start etc meant we didn't get a chance to catch up with you all) we all ensured that skiffs were well-represented amongst the 40 boats in this year's Great Tyne Row. 25km, 100s of rowers and supporters ... and sunshine to boot .... what could be better?

Normally these write ups start with the alarm clock on the day itself. Today however, I feel we have to take a step back in time and recognise the sterling efforts of those individuals across all the clubs who've designed, stitched, cut, glued, painted, knotted, inflated, baked, sought, bought and gave so much of their time and energy to present the boats and crew costumes to such an amazing standard. These things always take significantly more time than the casual observer would credit (seriously, weeks in some cases), so go on... you all know who you are... give yourselves a hearty and well deserved three cheers hip hip ........ hip hip........ hip hip.......The effort was worth it!

That said, it was an early alarm that roused this week's intrepid explorers from their limited slumber (previous paragraph explains lack of sleep). Following a quick hustle for fur, ropes and daggers and a spot check of shields, dragons head, furry seat covers and drums, we headed out on the first of the day's trips to Newburn.

On arrival we joined the flurry of activity as boats arrived, trailers were cleared and dispatched and last minute adornments were added to boats and rowers alike. (it's great to see the themes emerging...) Others may have to add detail as we were quickly whisked away, taking the trailer and return vehicle down to Tynemouth. Kindly the powers that be had closed the central motorway so we were diverted numerous times before reaching our destination. Here the organisation kicked in with a friendly welcome and a cordoned off car park (trailers left / cars right.. lovely!) our attempt at a quick dash back via alternate route was thwarted by the closure of the quayside and after spiralling in circles a few times we were back en route and in Newburn (just) in time for the briefing over on the other bank, foregoing breakfast in place of information and some snappy trackers.

Briefed, dressed and GPS'd .. we were off, the river and wind affording us assistance and we were all too thankful that the row wasn’t 24 hours earlier. It became quickly apparent that we weren't the only boats to get dressed too up as a flurry of bumblebees, turtles, ballerinas (complete with swan's head on the bow) and the whole Mad Hatters Tea Party passed by, exchanging smiles , waves and wishes of good fortune. This kinship is part of the reason we do what we do!!!

Onlookers from the various paths and jetties also waved and cheered , with Conor (our self-appointed PR officer) ensuring all got a wave or a twirl of the axe back in return (occasionally accompanied by a "Viking grimace" for effect)

Passing under the bridges on the Tyne is always special but to do it in full Viking regalia, rowing to a pounding drum with axes raised high and the echoes of our Nordic shrieks rebounding from the iconic bridges and buildings definitely got the hairs on the back of the neck tingling. Thanks to those gathered on the Millennium bridge for their support and cheers of encouragement.... this only added to the occasion.

Just past the bridges we paused for a quick regulation "cake break" to enable us to regain formation and take on valuable nutrients (jam and sprinkles) then we off for the second half.

At one point I feared a doping scandal would cloud the day as suspicious packets were observed being thrown from the Whitburn vessel to their fellow skiffies. Upon closer inspection these turned out to be "Fisherman's Friends"(keeping to theme!) which hopefully do not appear on the sport’s list of banned substances.

It became clear that we were getting close to the last mile or so as we noticed the size of the company we were in. Monster propellers stuck out from the water and huge ferries suddenly made our "massive" skiff feel very small. We did however balance this argument with the fact we were significantly more attractive (and modest)

From the outset it was our plan to finish together (Blyth, Whitburn and ourselves) and the final run home took some delicate oar work and tight control as three coxes worked together to ensure that that we crossed the line in perfect unison (down to the second) . As the old Viking fishing and skiffing song goes (roughly translated and with a great deal of artistic licence) " T'was bow to bow and with matching strokes, finished six merry maidens and nine canny blokes!"

Finishing horns blown, it was time for a blast around the corner into Tynemouth so full pull to arms and away into some really bouncy waters (thanks to the safety boats for their care and attention). This is what skiffs are designed for and it was great fun to get the bow in the air. After a brief burst of nausea, and some hilarity-linked timing issues we were back on form making good progress and surfed smoothly to shore to the joyful strains of a steel band playing "in the mood".

Back at beach there were lots of volunteers waiting to help us land and get the boat over the rocks safely (thanks again folks). At one point we were in such close company carrying the boat that my fur leg wrappings were caught underfoot by a following trawlerman, almost taking my baggy trousers with it and risking exposure of the horse-hair undercrackers beneath (it's all in the detail). Thankfully for all, the wrappings gave way and we proceeded uncompromised with modesty still intact.

Safely on dry land we were warmed to see familiar faces from home had made the journey to greet us. Many photos were taken and inevitable oar comparisons made (this time even more pronounced as light carbon fibre oars were compared with our "tree trunks"

Refreshments ranged from the traditional (rustic bread being broken to supplement the mead and soup rations) to the more modern (beer and burgers) and some wonderful fusion (a drinking horn full of "Fosters") Katie's blue cheese quiche being especially noteworthy (only wished I asked to use one of their magnificent swords to cut it)

The haven was by now full of people and boats and there was a real buzz was about the place. Presentations followed, with well-deserved recognition given to those who have organised the event and helped out (hat's off folks!) and all crews enthusiastically supported each other as winners were announced. It was then that the impact of our approach of camaraderie and unity became obvious as we made history by being presented not only the eagerly expected "enjoying the view" pennant for joint last place, but we also were awarded the joint fastest skiff in class as we all had indeed finished together. Magic!

Full results are available on the website, but special awards were given to "Just for the halibut!" for best dressed crew, Swan Lake for best dressed boat and St Andrews gaining the Harry Clasper award for breaking a rudder and using an oar to help steer ... to all winners and competitors well done!!

I made the final pilgrimage to Newburn to retrieve the car (thanks to the wonderful Ian and Elsie for the lift) whilst the boats were packed, fond farewells made and best wishes exchanged. Thanks too for the patience of those who waited in Tynemouth for that final pickup. It was indeed a sleepy trio of Vikings that stood on the curb when I arrived back, all traces of boats and rowers gone and even the ice cream man was looking at his watch.

Quickly replenished and revived by a homeward pitstop we reflected on another absolutely cracking adventure in grand company…..

OK fellow adventurers..... Where next ??????? (hum the theme tune of your choice!!)

I like this one, because there's a lot to see. Different colors, textures, lines, objects and the nice shadow. See the large version.
