Kavalcare Solar System for Jhpiego Mid-Wife Clinic Dec8, 2014
Every year, 12,000 women in Pakistan die of birth complications. The Maternal, Newborn and Child Health (MNCH) Services Component, implemented by MCHIP/Jhpiego, aims at preventing maternal, newborn, and child deaths by ensuring skilled birth attendance (SBA) through a total market approach, empowered community, timely referral of obstetric and neonatal complications to an emergency obstetric and newborn care (EmONC) facility, and improved access to child care.
Lack of electricity in remote areas is a major issue that often leads to obstetric complications and newborn deaths. Refrigerated storage is vital for the effectiveness of life saving drugs and vaccines. Ice boxes are used in remot areas of this purpose but it is an ineffective method especially when easy availability of ice is a problem. To overcome these issues, Lodhie Foundation in association with Maternal and Child Health Integrated Program/JHPIEGO, extended its Kavalcare program and provided a Solar Powered System to a remote clinic located at village Haji Usman Jhakro near Makli, District Thatta. System provides sufficient power to operate a small refrigerator, a fan and 3 lamps 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. It was designed, manufactured and installed by Shaan Technologies private Limited Karachi. After installation of Solar System in August 2014, this small remote clinic is serving a community of 10,000 plus persons who lives in village Haji Usman and surrounding areas. On an average 10 patients visits this clinic each day. Clinic also provides up to 15 birth attendance and new born care in a month.

GURU KA LANGAR
Guru Ka Langar The tradition of serving langar Initiated by Guru Nanak Dev Ji and then established by the 3rd Guru Sri Guru Amar Dass Ji at Goindwal.
Even the Mughal King Akbar came and sat among the ordinary people to share langar.
The institution of Guru ka Langar has served the community in many ways. It has ensured the participation of women and children in a task of service for mankind. Women play an important role in the preparation of meals, and the children help in serving food to the pangat. Langar also teaches the etiquette of sitting and eating in a community situation, which has played a great part in upholding the virtue of sameness of all human beings; providing a welcome, secure and protected sanctuary.
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Everyone is welcome to share the Langar; no one is turned away. Each week a family or several families volunteer to provide and prepare the Langar. This is very generous, as there may be several hundred people to feed, and caterers are not allowed. All the preparation, the cooking and the washing-up is done by volunteers and or by voluntary helpers (Sewadars).
In the Golden Temple Community Kitchen at an average 75,000 devotees or tourists take langar in the Community Kitchen daily; but the number becomes almost double on special occasions. On average 5.000 kg Wheat Flour, 1.250 kg Cereals, 500 kg Rice, 5000 Ltr Milk, 500 kg Sugar, 250 kg Pure Ghee is used a day. Nearly 100 LPG Gas Cylinders are used to prepare the meals. 100’s of employees and devotees render their services to the kitchen.

IMPORTANCE OF LANGAR TO SIKHISM
Bhai Desa Singh in his Rehitnama says, "A Sikh who is 'well to do' must look to the needs of his poor neighbours. Whenever he meets a traveller or a pilgrim from a foreign country, he must serve him devotedly.
Maharaja Ranjit Singh made grants of jagirs to gurdwaras for the maintenance of langars. Similar endowments were created by other Sikh rulers as well. Today, practically every gurdwara has a langar supported by the community in general. In smaller gurdwaras cooked food received from different households may comprise the langar. In any case, no pilgrim or visitor will miss food at meal time in a gurdwara. Sharing a common meal sitting in a pangat is for a Sikh is an act of piety. So is his participation in cooking or serving food in the langar and in cleaning the used dishes. The Sikh ideal of charity is essentially social in conception. A Sikh is under a religious obligation to contribute one-tenth of his earnings (daswand) for the welfare of the community. He must also contribute the service of his hands whenever he can, service rendered in a langar being the most meritorious.

Weighing in at a maximum of 173 tons and measuring on average 30 meters in length, there is no question that the blue whale is the largest mammal known to exist. Many used to wonder what this animal consumed to build its massive size. Surprisingly, the blue whale eats krill, a very small crustacean, and can consume nearly 4 tons per day. To do this, a whale swiftly swims into a group of krill and open its humongous mouth. They use their baleen plates, hanging from the sides of their upper mouth, as a filter system to push out the water, keeping the krill. Krill are a very high energy food source, and give the whales the nutrients needed to maintain their enormous size. Blue whales are rare, and either travel alone or with a small group. They can reach speeds up to 31 mph.
Blue whale hunting was banned in 1966, by the International Whaling Commission, and illegal whale hunting was stopped in Russia in 1970. Blue whale and fin whale hybrids are still hunted by the Icelandic whaling industry. The Blue Whale has been in the IUCN Red List since it originated. There are several types of blue whales and species have recovered at varying rates. The North Atlantic blue whales is specifically listed as endangered in Massachusetts. These whales are seen feeding off the coast of Cape Cod in summer and fall. The blue whale does not have a natural predator on account of their size. Instead, it is primarily threatened by commercial shipping, boat strikes, and free drifting fishing nets. In addition, the species is affected by noise pollution from increased ocean commercial traffic, which is affecting the whale’s ability to communicate with its pod about travel about migration and food sources.

The average lifespan of an airliner is around 25 years. This B737 was built in 1999 as a dash 600 (or new generation B737) and delivered to SAS. Served with the Scottish airline Globespan from 2005 as G-CDKT. Sold to Egyptian airline Midwest in 2009.
It is seen here on "death row" at Kemble/Cotswold Airport awaiting its fete.
The dash 600 was built in very small numbers, only around 60 were built out of over 3,000 New Generation models. This may go some way to explaining why this one faces the axe.
What's left of it has been transported to London Stansted in May 2011. Hangared with Ryanair as an instructional airframe.

the Anchor, well, what a gem, for us Real Ale questers it was a great find...providing you have an afternoon sesh.. I know this is Beer in The Evening, but unless you're eating, and have therefore booked a table, you will be treated like a second-class citizen during the evenings. We tend to use pubs for drinking in, strange as this may seem... We counted 36 tables, restaurant AND bar, and every one was reserved, this occured on four different occasions, so now it's aftenoons only. A great shame, as it is a beautiful pub, in a beautiful location.

Fantastic setting, but first impressions count, there is a sign saying something about no children allowed in the bar - however one of the bar staff clarified this as babies in pushchairs are not permitted. The menu is too extensive, it took several minutes to find the non fish dishes on the menu. The menu is far too complicated. Going for a non fish dish was for some of our party a bad mistake - they ordered a pasta dish whish was almost a tin of tomatoes poured over some pasta - too much tomato taste and very little else. I had the gurt big pie, which was excellent. The barman / waiter was very friendly and knowledgeable, the service was good, prices were average. If you're a fish lover, or you enjoy sitting outside a pub by the water, then this place is a must, when in the Starcross Area, otherwise, there are probably better places to eat.

To much on the menu was the first thing i noticed and a very severe looking woman who turned out to be the landlady. Beer was good with a decent selection. Abbot ale is always good. Food was good too but took me nearly an hour to decide.(i may just be too fussy but over 20 differnt mussel sauces is a bit much) I shall return however.

been there more than a few times, I was surpirsed to see so many negative comments to be honest. They do an excellent seafood selection, which I tend to have every time I go there. Will be there a ain soon, so I will report back.
