Calm after the storm, a very applicable evening, on May 9, 2014, in these days of Eurovision-madness.
A severe thunderstorm passed Schoonhoven and other parts of the Netherlands in the early evening. The moment the rain stopped, the sun broke through the clouds, which resulted in a fantastic rainbow. Shortly after, the calmth intensified, as a cloudless blue sky appeared above us. A good time to take some photo's, here showing the 'Haven' of Schoonhoven, with city hall as a prominent member of the Haven.
day two.
good news, i haven't quit yet! haha, i had no idea what to do today though. stressing out about ideas reminded me how helpful lists can be. i brainstormed and wrote down a bunch of ideas and props i'll need for them. hopefully i can get to the craft store soon and they'll all work out!
this is definitely the second time i've used this song on here... it's just so god damn perfect and applicable...

Excerpt from stcatharines.ca:
Built in 1905 by the Cataract Power Company, numbers 3, 5, 11, and 15 Power Glen are wood frame workers’ cottages. The one and a half storey Carpenter Gothic homes retain much of their original character including: Greek revival pitched 6/9 roof; modern siding, which simulates the original clapboard finish; pattern of window and door openings (although the sashes have been changed), which reflect the homes’ traditional appearance; Greek revival front verandah with columns, baluster, rail and sweeping cornice (not applicable to number 15 Power Glen, which now contains a partially enclosed veranda); and a vent in the gable.
The addition of roof dormers and a west wing on number 3 Power Glen ring true to the home’s architectural character. Similarly, the addition of a west wing and garage (east side) at number 11 Power Glen, an east and west additions to number 15 Power Glen, are sympathetic to these homes. In addition, there have also been stylistic changes to number 11, including window shutters, a fish scale gable and drip mouldings over the windows and door.

Pulicat lake bird sanctuary is a saline backwater lake lying along the T.N.-A.P coast; part extending to Chengalpattu district of T.N. It has an area of 481 sq.KM and it is the 2nd largest brackish water lagoon in India after Chilka lake in Orissa. The area on the TN side is 153.67 sq.km.
The Pulicat sanctuary is drained by Arni river while the Buckingham canal brings in the city’s drainage water. At the southern end is an opening on to Bay of Bengal through a shallow mouth of 200 m in width. The rest of the lake is closed by a sand bar running parallel to the Bay of Bengal in the form of the Sriharikota island.
The sanctuary has an area of 321 Sq. KM with 108 sq.KM of National Park area.
It lies within 11o 30’ N to 11o 42’ N and 76o 30’ E to 76o 45’ E.
Rainfall ranges from 800 - 2000mm. Temperature varies from 14o C to 33o C.
Altitude ranges from 100’ MSL to 1200’ MSL.
The wetlands eco system are considered as among the richest areas of bio diversity. Pulicat, by virtue of the mixing of fresh water with sea water is found to be an ideal habitat for diverse life-forms. 160 species of fish, 25 species of polychaete worms, 12 species of prawn, 19 species of mollusk and 100 speceis of birds are well documented apart from a number of other aquatic flora and fauna.
Among the most spectacular is the flamingo-a tall gaunt, white-coloured bird with a touch of pink on the wings, pink beak and legs, seen feeding in shallow water. The squat, large-billed grey pelican with gular pouch and a number of ducks are commonly seen. Flocks of sea gulls and terns circling in the sky or bobbing up and down on the water are an added attraction at pulicat. Besides, there are a number of waterside birds and waders such as curlews, stilts, plovers, sand pipers, lapwings, redshank. Egrets, herons, kites etc. are some other birds found here. The lake is also home to crabs, clams, mussels, oysters, snails, fish worms, insects, spiders, sponges, anemone, prawns, plankton and so on including rare endemic species like gilled leech, an unidentified bloodred fish, etc., Rapid siltation has caused loss of bio diversity. It is seen that mangrove opllen is found on Sriharikota Island indicating their existence some years back. Loss of mangroves may be one of the resons hastening siltation, reducing biodiversity and hence depriving fisherfolk of their livelihood.

The Black Drongo (Dicrurus macrocercus) is a small Asian passerine bird of the drongo family Dicruridae. It is a common resident breeder in much of tropical southern Asia from southwest Iran through India and Sri Lanka east to southern China and Indonesia. It is a wholly black bird with a distinctive forked tail and measures 28 cm (11 in) in length. Feeding on insects, it is common in open agricultural areas and light forest throughout its range, perching conspicuously on a bare perch or along power or telephone lines. The species is known for its aggressive behaviour towards much larger birds, such as crows, never hesitating to dive-bomb any birds of prey that invades its territory. This behaviour earns it the informal name of King Crow. Smaller birds often nest in the well-guarded vicinity of a nesting Black Drongo. Previously considered a subspecies (Dicrurus adsimilis macrocercus) of the African Fork-tailed Drongo (Dicrurus adsimilis), it is now recognized as a full species.
The Black Drongo has been introduced to some Pacific islands, where it has thrived and become abundant to the point of threatening and causing the extinction of native and endemic bird species there.

Boats in the Fuzeta fihery harbour. The Algarvian coastal fishery is primary artisan. The fleet consists almost entirely of traditional wooden ships.
The Algarve coastal fishery sector has to deal with:
-catches are failing and the possibilities to better this situation are limited due to environmental considerations and restrictions
-the fishery businesses are small and the income is unstable since it’s being directly dependent on the haul. A part of the income is paid in kind;
-it's difficult to find people willing to work in the sector
-the taxation regime applicable to the sector and the social security contribution regime is seen as prejudicial for those working in the sector.
Another manual focus / shallow DoF (lens fully open) exercise. So it's number 15 of The Taming of the shrew (breaking in the Samyang 85 1,4 lens) album here. And number 16 of the Fuzeta/Fuseta album here.

This cluster of valves is called a fire pump (discharge) test header, an important feature of a building's fire sprinkler system, used for periodic flow testing of the system's water pump as required by applicable fire safety codes. As far as I can tell from research (mostly websites of companies selling fire safety systems and services), the test involves connecting hoses to these valves; each valve then opened at various points during testing to verify the pump meets standards for water flow and pressure (its capacity) under different flow levels.
I've driven past the side of the building many times over the years, but only recently noticed this interesting cluster of valves. Apparently, the number of valves these headers accommodate varies with the size of the building and its fire sprinkler pump capacity.
Seems to have replaced an older model, see below. DVLA says this one still taxed though something seems a bit odd...

The Red Hills Lake, also called Puzhal Lake (Tamil: புழல் ஏரி) is located in Ponneri Taluk of Thiruvallur district, Tamilnadu, South India . It is one of the two rain-fed reservoirs from where water is drawn for supply to Chennai City, the other one being the Chembarambakkam Lake.
Redhills lake:The other name of this lake in Tamil is POZHAL YERI; Previously this was used as a Irrigation lake. During the British Rule, it was utilised as a Military Camp. That is why Pozhal Town is also expressed as Camp. This lake was used as an Airport for Water plans for to make a landing and takeoff. There was a concrete ramp to bring the floating crafts and vessals to the then Workshop and the remains can be seen. There was a big Bangalow for the Military personals with Wind mill pump house, sump, overhead tank,a small swimming pool, Tennis court and a mini Theatre for the military use.In order to feed the water plans, there were few huge M.S.tanks for oil storage on the earthern bunds of this lake. For this heavy movement of vehicles, the earthern bunds are enforced with concrete paths. The lake and its water was made to quench the thirst of Chennaities right from the year1868. This lake gets it s supply from Poondi Reservoir and the Cholavaram Lake, through its Upper and Lower Supply Channals. Thus the irrigation utility was stopped. Now a days Poondi Reservoir and Sembaramapkkam Lakes interlinked to get water from Kandaleru (Telugu Ganga Project)and at present ,the Redhills Lake is made to fill on both sides apart from the rain water from the Catchment areas. Its water spreading area is around 7.5K.Ms and with much storage capacity, when compared Poondi and Cholavaram Lakes.

I was not ready for this shot ! I went to a far off place with my 70-300 lens to capture the big Sun. Suddenly this composition struck me and I snapped the same with the same lens. The Exif is :
Camera Canon EOS 60D
Exposure 0.005 sec (1/200)
Aperture f/8.0
Focal Length 70 mm
ISO Speed 100
I had to zoom out fully in 70-300 to get this effect - otherwise only the Sun or the reflection would have come. Anyway I was lucky that this shot came with a 70-300 lens.
Thanks & regards

Every inch of this bird has been calculated for a special purpose: to fly.
These machines flying so full of life so small and needed a powerful light, much lighter, a good compact structure and ability to float. Well, the thought that has given them everything.
When a bird inhales air oxygen it comes to almost the shoes, if applicable. Often, their lungs have up to nine air bags parts, some of which are extensions to the core, ranging from the bones. Mammals have very heavy, dense bones in the hand bones of birds are hollow and made of a spongy network to increase its capacity for air.
But even the skull of the same bird appears to be designed to enhance their ability to float. Some bones have something like pallets and rigid, for, by all indications, lighten the weight of this machine wheel. His "nose", or rather, peak, has no teeth, because they need to manage robust and powerful jaw muscles.
To enhance its lightness as well, the tail feathers are a bones.
There are birds of prey when flying at high speed to avoid a collision with an unexpected obstacle making a perfect Immelmann movement like a shorn. We know of an African eagle andalusia rush to spin at speeds of 150 kilometers per hour to reach the dam can hold with such skill, extending the wings and tail in a comet, which manages to stand in a space of seven meters .
When the birds are landing cushion the shock to their paws, which consist of three pieces of bone with rigid joints, which operate in opposite directions. This is probably the most efficient absorber in nature.

Took this a few weeks ago while assisting Dave on one of his shoots for uni. He'd arranged the run of a small supermarket/dairy/newsagents/corner shop (delete as applicable) and honestly, I saw this, and just loved the colours and the lighting.
Struck me since, that it's with a little irony that I took this of all the shots, simply because I'm a bit against this relentless hype of various energy drinks. Exceptional marketing which feeds you over and over with one caffeine riddled drink after another. These things were responsible for one of my worst liquid intake related illnesses ever. Bloody things! ;-) Mind you, it obviously works, if Red Bull can sponsor an F1 team, arrange whizzy planes to tour the world and run soapbox derbys (they look like fun!) then fair play to them! ;-)

This is based off of the suit Batman wore during the Superman fight in Batman: The Dark Knight returns movie and book. Though the suit didn't differ much between the movie and the book, there were some subtle differences. So, to make it more applicable to both groups, and easier for myself to make, this is a cross between the two.
The armor and belt is made out of Procreate. The cape is made out of Sculpey. The hair is modded elf/werewolf hair. The legs were modded to be stud taller in the same manner my other TDKR Batman was. This was painted by me.

Perilla is a genus consisting of one major Asiatic crop species Perilla frutescens and a few wild species in nature belonging to the mint family, Lamiaceae. The genus encompasses several distinct varieties of Asian herb, seed, and vegetable crop, including P. frutescens (deulkkae) and P. frutescens var. crispa (shiso).[1] The genus name Perilla is also a frequently employed common name ("perilla"), applicable to all varieties.[2][3] Perilla varieties are cross-fertile and intra-specific hybridization occurs naturally.[1] Some varieties are considered invasive.[4]

The light at the end of the tunnel... or however the old saying goes, would be rather applicable now. Here in the region, spring is coming fast, and temperatures are beginning to trend upward. So, to get us in the mood, I shot at sunset for once - not just cloudy darkness. I like mood better, but it's slowly getting sunnier, so I guess we'd better get to working with sun again!
But per the usual, enough of my photographic manifesto. Spending an evening at 502 in East Chicago, we heard the Shortline (SCIH; see flic.kr/p/2hWPoqh for some context/knowledge) over the radio requesting permission onto the NS at 503. We weren't expecting anything special, but there's always the slim chance they use their own power. Of course, that wasn't the case. However, what we thought was just a normal Dash 9 ended being one of the specially-painted "Sonic Bonnets" from NS - the 4002 in this case. They are leaving the west complex of Indiana Harbor Works for 501, with a freshly assembled 60C - slab loads for Calvert, Alabama.
