'Tis better to have loved and lost

Than never to have loved at all.

My first marriage actually took place on this hallowed day when I was young, romantic, and the world was my oyster. Suffice it to say I got shucked. I have confirmed through experience, the losing part is ridiculously expensive, bringing the entire concept into serious question. My second marriage more realistically took place on D-Day. Sadly, it hardly represented an end to hostilities.

I'm not sure that even Tennyson would have considered this verse applicable today, but for estate planning considerations, the results are about the same either way.

Absolutely no photoshopping involved here! This was taken in our garden looking towards Eastbourne.

In meteorology, a cloud is an aerosol comprising a visible mass of minute liquid droplets, frozen crystals, or particles suspended in the atmosphere above the surface of a planetary body. The droplets and crystals may be made of water or various chemicals. On Earth, clouds are formed as a result of saturation of the air when it is cooled to its dew point, or when it gains sufficient moisture (usually in the form of water vapor) from an adjacent source to raise the dew point to the ambient temperature. They are seen in the Earth's homosphere (which includes the troposphere, stratosphere, and mesosphere). Nephology is the science of clouds which is undertaken in the cloud physics branch of meteorology.

There are two methods of naming clouds in their respective layers of the atmosphere; Latin and common. Cloud types in the troposphere, the atmospheric layer closest to Earth's surface, have Latin names due to the universal adaptation of Luke Howard's nomenclature. Formally proposed in 1802, it became the basis of a modern international system that divides clouds into five physical forms that appear in any or all of three altitude levels (formerly known as étages). These physical types, in approximate ascending order of convective activity, include stratiform sheets, cirriform wisps and patches, stratocumuliform layers (mainly structured as rolls, ripples, and patches), cumuliform heaps, and very large cumulonimbiform heaps that often show complex structure. The physical forms are divided by altitude level into ten basic genus-types. The Latin names for applicable high-level genera carry a cirro- prefix, and an alto- prefix is added to the names of the mid-level genus-types. Most of the genera can be subdivided into species and further subdivided into varieties.

Two cirriform clouds that form higher up in the stratosphere and mesosphere have common names for their main types. They are seen infrequently, mostly in the polar regions of Earth. Clouds have been observed in the atmospheres of other planets and moons in the Solar System and beyond. However, due to their different temperature characteristics, they are often composed of other substances such as methane, ammonia, and sulfuric acid as well as water.

Taken as a whole, homospheric clouds can be cross-classified by form and level to derive the ten tropospheric genera and the two additional major types above the troposphere. The cumulus genus includes three species that indicate vertical size. Clouds with sufficient vertical extent to occupy more than one altitude level are officially classified as low- or mid-level according to the altitude range at which each initially forms. However they are also more informally classified as multi-level or vertical.

From Wikipedia regarding this power plant: "The Dynegy power plant, previously owned by Pacific Gas and Electric Co.(PG&E), Duke Energy, and LSPower (PG&E), has played a large role in Morro Bay, and in providing electricity to the Central Coast and the Central Valley of California (primarily Fresno and Bakersfield). The plant was built in the 1950s, and Dynegy had hoped to modernize it with a new combined cycle plant. The plant was operating at relatively low capacity factors (approximately 5%) under contract with PG&E, due primarily to economics. The plant was staffed with 44 employees. A portion of the city's budget came from taxes on the natural gas the plant burned. The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the courts are wrestling with how to interpret the Clean Water Act (CWA) and its applicability to power plants. The EPA has ruled that the local Regional Water Quality Control Boards are responsible for ensuring that the current and the future plant are permitted and regulated.[citation needed]

The modernization proposal was rejected, and the plant closed in February 2014.[37] Continued operation would have required expensive upgrades by 2015. The 650-megawatt plant operated around the clock during the energy crisis of 2000, but the plant had been operating at just one-sixth of that capacity in the recent years preceding its closure.[38] Future uses of the site and/or plant are undetermined, as of December 2016.

In 2018, a joint venture of German energy company EnBW and Seattle-based Trident Winds announced its plan to obtain the power plant's grid connection to connect a 650 MW floating offshore wind park comprising up to 100 floating wind turbines and a floating substation situated some 30 mi (48 km) off the coast.[39]." Unfortunately this is not applicable today

so I let the sun come up :-)

When I took this pic I was wandering with the word "Uninspiring" in my mind, thinking about what could I shoot to. I believe that at the moment you click on something, no matter how dumb, ugly, simple or absurd it is, somehow you felt "inspired" to do so. I don't know if I have misunderstood the topic of this week but, under my point of view, in photography the term "Uninspiring" is not applicable ;) Good week everyone!!

statue of limitations

This bronze sculpture towers over several storeys in the stair hall. It represents a flagpole with a flag of mourning at half-mast. However, only the lower half can be seen in the Humboldt Forum – the flagpole metaphorically pierces the ceiling, emerging from the ground somewhere else entirely.

The title of the piece is a play on words on the legal term ‘Statute of Limitations’. The UN Convention on the Non-Applicability of Statutory Limitations to War Crimes and Crimes Against Humanity of 1968 stipulates that there is no statute of limitations for the prosecution of genocide. The artist is using the title to reference the colonial crimes committed by the German Reich, for example, its actions in what is now the Republic of Namibia between 1904 and 1908.

Statue of Limitations is a critical commentary on Germany’s handling of the crimes committed during its colonial past – crimes it is only now beginning to address.

We have now more strict new measures in the UK, to tackle the spread of coronavirus, including a ban on public gatherings of more than two people.

The new guidance says people should only leave their homes for:

Shopping for basic necessities such as food and medicine. Shopping trips should be as infrequent as possible.

One form of exercise a day such as a run, walk or cycle. This should be done alone or only with people you live with

Any medical need, or to provide care or to help a vulnerable person. This includes moving children under the age of 18 between their parents' homes, where applicable. Key workers or those with children identified as vulnerable can continue to take their children to school.

Travelling to and from work, but only where work absolutely cannot be done from home.

So do care and stay safe and healthy my cool flickr friends !!!

My love for photography was cemented with this scene, I always had a camera from a Box to a F-70 but had only put it to use for snapshots of people, it was stumbling onto this view and franticly trying to capture this moment that sent me down the rabbit hole. Since taken only one version of this shot has hung in our house but that will change now that I feel I finally achieved the edit that truly captures what drew me to this tranquil view. “Make hay while the sun is shining” is a phase that is usually not applicable to photography but using the elements around you to soften or block harsh illumination will allow you to squeeze out a few more shots than just those provided in the Blue and Golden hours.

The name “iris” is derived from the Greek word for rainbow, which is especially applicable with Louisiana iris plants. They come in a host of colors, primarily due to their ability to inbreed amongst the five separate species – Iris fulva, I. brevicaulis, I. nelsonii, I. hexagona, and I. giganticaerulea. In south Louisiana, all of these species occur amongst each other and freely hybridize naturally, resulting in colors not found in any other iris group

Male Anna's, like this one, have a throat patch, called a gorget, that extends over the head. Its red irridescence is a result of the feather microstructure reflecting light. When he flies up to 131 feet and then dives during courtship displays, the male markets himself to female spectators by orienting toward the sun. This is essential to his mating success. "Hummingbirds have tiny legs and can neither hop nor walk, though they can sort of scoot sideways while perched. Anna's Hummingbirds normally have a body temperature of around 107 degrees Fahrenheit—that's a scorching temperature for a human. When outside temperatures fall, Anna's and many other species of hummingbirds enter torpor. Their breathing and heart rate slow, and their body temperature can fall as low as 48 degrees Fahrenheit. When the temperature warms, the hummingbirds can become active again in a few minutes. What do you call a flock of hummingbirds? Few animals have so many applicable terms, and none so beautiful. Instead of calling them a flock, choose between a bouquet, a glittering, a hover, a shimmer, or a tune of hummingbirds." Information from the All About Birds website, www.allaboutbirds.org, © Cornell Lab of Ornithology.

It is a very big mural and it is not my best shot, but I still wanted to show it to you. It is very impressive to see it and also very applicable to the world situation of today.

Found some background information on the internet:

""This eye-catching 30m long mural depicts the tragic explosion of an atomic bomb. In the center, a skeleton erupts into flames, trailed by a train of ghosts and others humans running from the fire. The artwork’s history is just as captivating as the images it portrays.

Japanese artist Tarō Okamoto started this work in 1967, when he was asked to paint a mural for a new hotel in Mexico City. He completed the giant mural in September 1969, but the finished work was never on display—his client had gone bankrupt before the hotel’s completion. The mural then went missing for decades.

Tarō’s secretary and life partner, Toshiko Okamoto, kept looking for the masterpiece even after the artist’s death. She finally discovered it in 2003 in a Mexican suburb. Due to decades of negligent storage, the work was heavily damaged. Toshiko and her supporters decided to transport the artwork back to Japan and restore it there.

The restoration was a huge project that cost hundreds of millions of dollars. The mural was separated into several parts then shipped to Japan in a container in 2005. Sadly, Toshiko died just before its arrival. The mural was restored by Emile Yoshimura, who worked with other pieces made by Tarō.

After a few temporary exhibitions, those in charge of the painting started looking for a place to permanently display the work. Several cities participated in the bid, and it was decided it would be put in a passageway in Tokyo’s Shibuya Station, so the maximum number of people can see the mural as a public art. It has been on display since November 2008. Since then, billions of people have passed by this giant masterpiece, many completely unaware of its history.""

"Laughing Kookaburras are the largest Kingfisher in the world. Its laugh is used to signal their territory to other birds. They live in families, with siblings remaining in the family till they are old enough to look after themselves. They also act as helpers during the breeding season."

"There is a lot of folklore about kookaburras in particular. They say if they laugh in the middle of the day it means it's going to rain. There's no scientific evidence behind this, but everyone who lives near them will have an applicable anecdote."

BewAre Of tHe seCond afTer ...

Time is the continued sequence of existence

and events that occurs in an apparently irreversible succession from the past, through the present, into the future. It is a component quantity of various measurements used to sequence events, to compare the duration of events or the intervals between them, and to quantify rates of change of quantities in material reality or in the conscious experience. Time is often referred to as a fourth dimension, along with three spatial dimensions.

Time has long been an important subject of study in religion, philosophy, and science, but defining it in a manner applicable to all fields without circularity has consistently eluded scholars. Nevertheless, diverse fields such as business, industry, sports, the sciences, and the performing arts all incorporate some notion of time into their respective measuring systems.

Time in physics is operationally defined as "what a clock reads".
