Came upon this lovely, blooming shell ginger in the Princeville Botanical Gardens in Kauai. It is an amazing, magical spot. If you are ever on the island be sure to schedule a tour. Commonly known as shell ginger it is native to East Asia. They can grow up to 8 to 10 feet tall and bear colorful funnel-shaped flowers. They are grown as ornamentals and their leaves are used in cuisine and traditional medicine. They are also sometimes known as the pink porcelain lily, variegated ginger or butterfly ginger.

For Smile on Saturday challenge, "Flower Name is First Name" , two names are applicable either "Ginger" or "Lily".

Ranthambore National Park (Hindi: रणथंभौर राष्ट्रीय उद्यान ) or Ranthambhore is one of the largest national parks in northern India. It is situated in Sawai Madhopur district of southeastern Rajasthan, about 110 km northeast of Kota and 160 km southeast of Jaipur, which is also the nearest airport. The nearest town and railway station is at Sawai Madhopur, about 11 km away; Kota is another convenient station as all trains stop here. RIDCOR operates a mega highway between Kota and Ranthambhore.

Ranthambhore was established as the Sawai Madhopur Game Sanctuary in 1955 by the Government of India and was declared one of the Project Tiger reserves in 1973. Ranthambore became a national park in 1980. In 1984, the adjacent forests were declared the Sawai Man Singh Sanctuary and Keladevi Sanctuary, and in 1991 the tiger reserve was enlarged to include the Sawai Man Singh and Keladevi sanctuaries.

Ranthambore wildlife sanctuary is known for its tigers and is one of the best places in India to see these majestic predators in the jungle. Tigers can be easily spotted even during the daytime. A good time to visit Ranthambore National Park is in November and May when the nature of the dry deciduous forests makes sightings common. Its deciduous forests were once a part of the magnificent jungles of Central India.

The park lies at the edge of a plateau and is bounded to the north by the Banas River and to the south by the Chambal River. There are several lakes in the park. It is named for the historic Ranthambhore fortress, which lies within the national park. The park covers an area of 392 km². It is known for its tiger population and is one of India's Project Tiger reserves. Other major wild animals include leopard, nilgai, wild boar, sambar, hyena, sloth bear and chital. It is home to wide variety of trees, plants, birds and reptiles. Ranthambore is the site of one of the largest banyan trees in India.

I have been observing this hyacinth for some days now. It is clearly withering away. In that respect the verb "die" would be applicable. But it is not that simple, because in all of this terminal decline the seeds of new life are being developed. What is happening is a kind of metamorphosis. In other words, there is continuity. Transformation does happen to all forms of life, including us. Whether there is metamorphosis and, hence, continuity, depends on whether or not new life can come out of the old. Just follow the hyacinth. Fuji X-Pro 1 plus Helios 44M-7 wide-open plus a 2x tele converter.

I have a Bird Photography talk/presentation that I delivered recently for our camera club, and have presented to a couple of other clubs in the past, this photograph is an example that demonstrates well a few of the important points I make in it.

1. "Have a baseline set of settings for different types of photography, and check your camera is set up properly before you start each session."

Why is this a good example of that? Because I didn't do it! You'll notice the EXIF is f/16, 1/250 sec and ISO 200. Not my bird settings at all, in fact left over from a macro session, with a flash, the day before. This happened because this Red-rumped Parrot was perched on a fence post right near where I pulled in to park my car. He didn't fly, so I grabbed the camera straight away and started shooting, without checking which is normally the first thing I do when I get the camera out of the car. The image on back of camera looked like a black square - completely under-exposed, you could hardly see the bird.

Which brings me to the second point.

2. "Shoot in RAW".

Because I shoot in RAW, I was able to recover the details from the under-exposed photo quite well. RAW gives you at least 2-3 stops of recovery capability, with good quality.

Third point.

3. "Post-processing is important for best image quality"

The applicability here is obvious, but even for a well exposed photo, getting good detail out of shadows and highlights is difficult without post-processing.

4. "It's all about getting close"

The closer you are to your subject, the better the image quality. Zoom into this image and check out the details in the feathers. Sometimes the amount of detail captured by our cameras just blows me away.

I love this view along the Ogwen Valley. Such a beautiful place!

I can't help but feel a bit sad looking back on this photo now. Not a care in the world, enjoying a day out. Breakfast and lunch in two different pubs and a quiet midweek Snowdonia trip.

According to wikipedia there were only 16 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the UK the day after this photo was taken.

No plans to head back to North Wales anytime over the next 3 months at least. Definitely for the best! But i am looking forward to the extended exercise* as it means i can head out a little bit further/longer on the bike.

I posted this image a couple of years ago, but thought I'd post it again, as it is so applicable right now. BC is in a state of emergency, with so many wildfires, and tens of thousands of people evacuated. My heart goes out to the many, many people have lost their homes and businesses. Travel has been restricted to anywhere in the Okanagan, which is where everyone goes on vacation in the summertime. Here in North Vancouver, the air is smoky, thick and grey with an orange glow.

I just hope that we get some rain soon, and that the firefighters are able to put the fires out.

Nymphaea nouchali, commonly known as the Red and blue water lily, Blue star water lily, Star lotus, Pygmy Water-lily, or by its synonym Nymphaea stellata, is a water lily of genus Nymphaea. The Blue waterlily is the national flower of Sri Lanka. White-flowered waterlilies (of several species) are the national flower of Bangladesh and the state flower for Andhra Pradesh, India.

This aquatic plant is native from the Indian Subcontinent to Australia region. It has been long valued as a garden flower in Thailand and Myanmar to decorate ponds and gardens.

In its natural state the Red and blue water-lily is found in static or slow-flowing aquatic habitats of little to moderate depth.

Donaukanal Wien

During the Islamist terrorist attack in downtown Vienna on November 2, when a lone gunman shot four people and injured 23 others before he was shot dead by the police, somebody allegedly shouted out of his window: "Schleich di, du Oaschloch!"

This sentence became a slogan comparable to the slogan "Je suis Charlie" after the 2015 shooting in France, but only in German speaking countries, because it isn't easy to translate it appopriately. "Get lost, asshole" is just a very vague and imprecise translation.

The demand "Schleich di" (literally "Sneak off!") in Bavarian and Austrian German reveals the mentality of this part of German speaking countries. It implies the person addressed isn't welcome here, but it also implies the self-confident, generous proposition to avoid being given a hard time by going away immediately. It implies the feeling of strength and power. The demand itself isn't rude, it only becomes so combined with "Oaschloch". You could say so to a person who's just climbed over your garden fence in order to steal apples from your apple trees. If you say so to a terrorist who shoots people, you show this asshole how small he is.

And of course this sentence is also applicable to assholes like Donald Trump.

It lies wholly within India in the district of Pithoragarh (State - Uttarakhand), between the western frontier of Nepal and the southern boundary of Tibet. The height is 6855 m. or 22,490 feet. On the left of this Peak is the famous Nanda Devi Peak and further left you get Maiktoli Peak. Mrigthuni means – Deer’s Chin or Navel.

Although these are obviously the washed clothes, they are dirty in a way, thanks to a pair of black pants in the background they have been washed together. This pair of black pants made everything perfectly grey. I think it is applicable to the way bad thoughts circulating in our mind might spoil something bright and beautiful.
