PopPhoto.com Photo of the Day, June 30, 2011

It started out as a promising day for a sunrise session, but as the sun started to rise, the clouds rolled in to obscure the sun. As always, one tries to make the most of the situation.

Jeff Smallwood, Bill Conway and myself were all waiting for just the proper moment which never really came.....

I just finished planting annuals, a little later in the season than usual for me. I watered the plants and went on with my business. As the grill was warming up, and the late afternoon sun was doing its thing, I grabbed my camera to take a few snaps of my plants. This little Zinnia bud just begged to be photographed. I am so glad I listened.

In Queensland and NSW the weather has been wild and wet. Constant flooding of homes so thought would think of When The Going Gets Tough, The Tough Gets Going very applicable in the past months in this part of the world.

Living on the edge of the ranges get to view the weather from afar. Took a quick little drive yesterday morning as the weather was promising to break and so it did. This was taken from Ravensbourne National Park situated on the northern edge of the Darling Downs, Queensland, Australia. Hi guys!

Here I am with a new video!

After the snow-covered Tuscany, I decided to prepare something slightly different, and since I was in Venice for other reasons, I decided to prepare a video where I talk about the most famous and beautiful photo locations (in my opinion of course) of this unique city.

All along the video I talk a bit about the various compositions applicable to each location, along with the best times to be on the spot and other tips. I have listed the places according to my personal tastes, keep that in mind!

I leave you the link: youtu.be/JyVcqfJhqbU

If by any chance you like the videos I make.. Don't forget to subscribe to my channel, it would help me a lot!

Europe, Netherlands, Noord Holland, Zaandam, Intel Hotel (Molenaar en van Winden) (slightly cut from B & T)

Whimsical, farcical, post-modern, ironic, escapist, a typical artifact of 'the society of the spectacle'…all of these things are probably applicable to the architecture of this hotel and its surroundings – the transformed city centre of Zaandam ( a result of the Inverdam urban plan: here)

Sjoerd Soeters, the architectural supervisor of the Inverdam plan and the one who enlisted the archictects (Molenaar en van Winden) blamed them for plageriasm: here. He charged them with using his image language without giving him proper due.

This was curious business…how can there be plagiarism in post-modern architecture, which is basically the reworking of architectural pre-modernist clichés? As if the Disney Corporation sues a photographer who captures a blond and slender in-bred dog with long legs, claiming that he infringes upon the copyright of one its characters (Pluto).

And do I like it ? In a certain way I do, I must admit - not because I like its aesthetics, but because it’s delightfully deconstructivist (definition: a building that looks like a mess) and this kinda short circuits the nostalgia, the clichés... The hotel is a contradiction of itself. It turns irony around …… and makes the viewer wonder who actually the joke is on ;-)

L738 of December 14th 2025 featured a blast from the past in form of three YN2 Dash 8s leading the way, all facing north elephant style. These are three of four YN2 Dash 8 locomotives currently cycling through the power pool of locals between Brownsand and Waycross, running daily anywhere between those yards as L737, L738, L740, and perhaps other symbols as applicable.

Shooting here reminded me of the last time I'd shot here, nine years ago when we'd followed a grain train off the CSX Brunswick branch. That train had a YN2 SD70MAC leading, at the time the best thing you could catch on CSX it seemed: flic.kr/p/PvrXxD. That November, a pair of YN2 Dash 8s wouldn't have been so special, a trio certainly cool, but comparatively a such lashup in 2025 is unheard of. This sure invokes some though if maybe we should be paying more mind to matched tri-sets of YN3 GEVOs, most cool things were once so common.

The Butler county Emergency Services Unit team will be a lot safer in the first armored vehicle procured by the county.

County commissioners approved using up to $331,750 in American Rescue Plan funds to buy a large Humvee-like tactical vehicle that is outfitted and armored to provide optimum safety for the law enforcement officers who use it.

District Attorney Rich Goldinger told the supervisors the team, which is basically the county's SWAT team, will use the vehicle in high-intensity situations such as active shooters, search warrants and applicable Drug and Alcohol Task Force calls.

The armored car's most important feature is that it is bullet-proof.

Kottayam is a city in the Indian state of Kerala covering an area of 55.40 square kilometres (21.39 sq mi). It is the administrative capital of Kottayam district and is located in south-central Kerala with a population of 357,533 according to the 2011 census.

The city is an important trading centre for spices and commercial crops, especially rubber. Major Kerala print media such as Malayala Manorama, Deepika and Mangalam are headquartered in the town. Also a pioneering center of modern education in Kerala, Kottayam became India's first city to achieve 100% literacy in 1989 while the district became the first tobacco free district in India on September 28, 2008. The city is also widely known as Akshara Nagari (അക്ഷര നഗരി) (City of Alphabets) in honour of its contributions to print media and literature. It is known as the "Land of Letters, Lakes and Latex" on account of the upsurge in literacy, the presence of a vast network of rivers and canals, which empty into the great expanse of Vembanad and the sizable volume of natural rubber produced here.

Apart from being the educational hub of Kerala, Kottayam is also home to central and state government organisations including Mahatma Gandhi University, Rubber Board and India's Rubber research Institute along with the Government Medical College, Kottayam. MRF Limited, the leading tyre manufacturer in India has its original roots in the city and has a hi-tech manufacturing facility located at Vadavathoor, Kottayam. D.C. Books, the largest publisher and a leading bookseller in Kerala, is headquartered in Kottayam.

Ranthambore National Park (Hindi: रणथंभौर राष्ट्रीय उद्यान ) or Ranthambhore is one of the largest national parks in northern India. It is situated in Sawai Madhopur district of southeastern Rajasthan, about 110 km northeast of Kota and 160 km southeast of Jaipur, which is also the nearest airport. The nearest town and railway station is at Sawai Madhopur, about 11 km away; Kota is another convenient station as all trains stop here. RIDCOR operates a mega highway between Kota and Ranthambhore.

Ranthambhore was established as the Sawai Madhopur Game Sanctuary in 1955 by the Government of India and was declared one of the Project Tiger reserves in 1973. Ranthambore became a national park in 1980. In 1984, the adjacent forests were declared the Sawai Man Singh Sanctuary and Keladevi Sanctuary, and in 1991 the tiger reserve was enlarged to include the Sawai Man Singh and Keladevi sanctuaries.

Ranthambore wildlife sanctuary is known for its tigers and is one of the best places in India to see these majestic predators in the jungle. Tigers can be easily spotted even during the daytime. A good time to visit Ranthambore National Park is in November and May when the nature of the dry deciduous forests makes sightings common. Its deciduous forests were once a part of the magnificent jungles of Central India.

The park lies at the edge of a plateau and is bounded to the north by the Banas River and to the south by the Chambal River. There are several lakes in the park. It is named for the historic Ranthambhore fortress, which lies within the national park. The park covers an area of 392 km². It is known for its tiger population and is one of India's Project Tiger reserves. Other major wild animals include leopard, nilgai, wild boar, sambar, hyena, sloth bear and chital. It is home to wide variety of trees, plants, birds and reptiles. Ranthambore is the site of one of the largest banyan trees in India.
