Altered Journal

Altered notebooks or journals are an easy, yet meaningful, gift to create. I pick up journals and notebooks in clearance aisles and “dollar spots” in discount stores. The decoration on the cover does not matter because it can be altered to fit any theme! Choose an icon or theme special to the person to whom you are giving the journal to give it that personal touch. My husband loves mountain biking so I created a biking journal for him. He may use it to write about trails he likes or record his racing times or he may just use it for notes. Either way, it is a custom journal I made from the heart. And it is easy too!

Supplies: Notebook – Target

Paper - Rusty Pickle

Cardstock – Bazzill

Ink – Chalk Ink by Colorbox

Gaffer’s Tape – 7Gypsies

Assembly:

1.Measure the cover of the book. Cut two pieces of paper to that size.

2.Adhere the paper to front and back covers of the book.

3.Cut out a sentiment or image from the patterned paper. I chose a bicycle.

4.Adhere the sentiment or image to complimentary cardstock, trim, and adhere to front of book.

5.Add a title using rub-on letters.

6.Add book binding or gaffer’s tape to the spine of the book.

7.Ink edges of book.

This is the first page of my altered book. This is my first attempt at doing an altered book, and it took me a very long time to find and collect the elements I wanted to use to illustrate a poem I wrote called, Trapped. This page spills over to the second page with flames from the dragon that I freehand drew and cut out of several shades of orange scrapbook paper. The puzzle was an absolute find, as it had the main elements of the poem in it. This portion was tricky to attach, but I love the effect. The beginning of the first line, "Once upon a time," is above. I edged both pages with this wild red thread attached to brads to add thickness to the page and hold things together. The black is paint from the second page that I carried over to stretch the effect. The purple in the background is the color of the page in the original book. My blog has details of what I used, brands, etc.

This old Train Station is closed but found a new purpose. They turned it into a small hotel with a beautiful restaurant.
