You won't find much remaining of the 19th and early 20th century in our 21st century business world. The way we dress for work has altered completely. Women were not expected to show an ankle in the 1800s, men and women also always wore hats in public since you would have been considered improperly clothed without. 21st century men wouldn't normally appreciate having to wear the high, stiff collars of that period but even up to the 1960s men were not allowed to wear coloured shirts to the office.
Transport has also transferred away from shanties pony and horse- drawn carriages to public trains, private cars and bicycles. Horse drawn carriages were open to the public for lengthy journeys and later on trams were the first public transport in towns and cities. These were a regular and efficient transport model which has become contemporary once more now that our cities are choked with exhaust toxins and traffic jams.
Our office equipment would also be unrecognisable to any time- travellers from the 19th century as they were still writing business letters by hand and sometimes sending them by runner. There was of course an embryonic public postal distribution from 1635 where the recipient paid for the letter. Later the fax machine helped business function much faster and more efficiently by being a simple form of direct communication with anyone who had a fax machine. Writing letters or using snail mail, as it has been called since the advent of emails, has gradually died out for most communications so personal, hand written letters are a rare and distinctive treat these days as technology now makes instant and direct communication possible with most of the world.
Even though computers were first used in business in 1951 it is only in the last two decades that even the smallest business and most homes have a computer. It would be impossible to run a business today without one. Now there are many internet applications available to even the most basic, home- based business, whether that's using social media for publicity, having an online shop, a website or using the latest phone application to keep the customers returning to your door.
We have moved a long way from the days when business was conducted and deals done over a sherry within the club and no longer do we have to have sales squads carry samples in their cars to call on prospects at their places of business. Although business has become more competitive, in some ways it has become less difficult. Today we have teams of trained tele- sales personnel ringing potential customers for you.
Wherever we once had to arrange for managers to meet face to face now we have the world wide web to make the first contact with a potential customer. Making human contact is very important but if a meeting is to make a sale how often is that successful and how many times a complete waste of time?
The new way to introducea prospect to your enterprise combines new technology with a telephone. Today there are whole teams of tele- sales people who talk to the possible clients and sell your business for you. They set up meetings with individuals who are interested in your product so all you have to do is finalise the deal face to face or on the phone. So when telemarketing can do the job on your behalf why waste time doing the work that others can do for less? www.epictelemarketing.co.uk/

In order to show school stuff work without overloading the book, I cut two pieces down to the most essential parts and then stapled them on one side over other schoolwork. I added lift tabs using ribbon and stickers.
Heptonstall's original church was named after St Thomas a Becket, founded circa 1260 and was altered and added to over several centuries. It was damaged by a gale in 1847 (and is now only a shell), so a new church, St Thomas the Apostle, was built in the same churchyard. This suffered a lighting strike in 1875.
The old church ruin is now carefully maintained and occasionally open air services are conducted there.

The construction of the chapel began in about 1600 by Sir Henry Slingsby I at a time when wealthy landowners found it fashionable to have their own place of worship apart from the parish church.
Initially the building would have stood isolated from the main Red House which was still in its original location on the moated site 100 metres to the west, the construction of the modern main house was not begun until 1607. The chapel was built in the college style with the altar and main window in the eastern half separated by a screen from the western half where the servants and estate workers would probably have sat. The gallery on the first floor was most likely where the Slingsby family and guests sat. There are a couple of idiosyncrasies in its design - a “storeroom” runs down the entire north side on the ground floor, presumably for general use of the estate (eg storing apples!). Also on the first floor is another room behind the organ which was probably a muniments room. (A muniments cupboard which would fit exactly across one end of this room exists in one of the rooms in the main building and is certainly from the 17th century.)
The size of the building is unusual as it can seat far more than the contemporary Slingsby household of 24 and this may have aroused suspicion from the Archbishop. Consequently, the Slingsbys found it difficult to have the chapel consecrated as the Church was of the opinion that they would not be able to control the way the sacraments were celebrated. This was also at a time when catholicism was unpopular. From the diary of Sir Henry Slingsby II, we know it was used for christenings in 1636 and 1638 although on the second occasion the preacher refused to preach until he had obtained permission from the Chancellor of York.
The problems associated with having your own chapel at the time is perhaps reflected in its external design. The walls and windows that could be seen by any visitors (ie. the north and west) were plain, whereas those to the east and south, facing the house and gardens, were more ornate and obviously belonging to a religious building. It was not wise to advertise that you held services in your own household as it might invite accusations of irregularities from your enemies.
In its current state, the chapel appears remarkably original although it underwent huge restoration in the 1860s. The north and west walls were completely rebuilt with the brick inscription “Pro termino vitæ sic non nos nobis” (For the term of our life not for ourselves) moved from above the front door of the main building to above the chapel door.
The roof ridge was also lowered. The staircase, known as the staircase of friendship, came from the main building as well and is remarkable for the crests of family friends of the Slingsbys mounted on the newel posts. It is a 17th century “Who’s Who” of the landowners of the north. Even more remarkable is its original condition, the crests still have their 17th century paint showing through a bit of 21st century dust. Although not the only one of its kind, it is now almost certainly unique as other examples have been greatly altered. Half way up the staircase is the statue of a boy which probably held candles in his hands (one now lost) to light the stairs - it is one of the earliest examples of a lead statue. Much of the panelling is 17th century although it is not certain that it was all originally used in the chapel and, again, some may have been moved from the main house. During Red House’s time as a preparatory school (1902-2001) names of some of the leavers were painted on the panelling. Also coats of arms of some pupils were hung on the walls in the eastern half and are still here today.
The main east window does not contain much of its original glass. The top lights consist of fragments from the main house and were probably put there during the chapel’s restoration in the 19th century. The three lower lights have the coats of arms of Sir Henry Slingsby’s friends and the lower sections of these are memorial glass commemorating the death of Sir Charles Slingsby, in 1869, who drowned in the famous ferry capsize in the River Ure by Newby Hall. His hatchment also hangs on the south wall.

This is for a 6 way jigsaw jam swap and Wendy's theme was angels.
I've used alcohol inks for the background colour and beeswax to collage the angels and music on.
The magnificent sign in front of the former "Z" Frank Chevrolet dealership.
"Z" Frank was, at one time, the largest Chevrolet dealership in the United States, by sales volume. They held so much sway, I read in an article, that "Z" Frank himself had the final frontal design of the new-for-1971 Chevy Vega altered by changing the rectangular turn signals below the bumper to a round shape, to mimic driving lights.
The dealership has since moved, and it did not take this sign with it.

I went to a wonderful crafty girls meet-up yesterday, and we all had to bring altered coffee tins full of chocolate. I gave this one and got a gorgeous one in return. :-)

This is the First shot from my altered reality competition submissions. My wife got done up in a techno Japanese style look with new headphones. Kind of gives a Japanese Techno DJ feel.
Loy Krathong is a traditional lunar festival marks the end of the rainy season. The Thai tradition of Loy Krathong began in the ancient capital of Sukhothai and is now celebrated throughout Thailand. Parades and beauty contests are part of the fun. People release paper lanters into the sky and float decorated banana-leaf boats (krathongs) onto ponds, lakes and rivers on the full moon of the 12th month in the traditional Thai lunar calendar, honoring the Goddess of Water.
