These critically endangered white-backed vultures are a joy to be able to observe/photograph in any situation since there’s no telling how much longer they’ll still be around in the wild. In this specific shot, the birds are somehow managing to look affectionate and very intimidating all at the same time.

"Beauty put on one of her richest gowns to please the Beast, and waited for evening with the utmost impatience, at last the wished-for hour came, the clock struck nine, yet no Beast appeared. Beauty then feared she had been the cause of his death; she ran crying and wringing her hands all about the palace, like one in despair; after having sought for him everywhere, she recollected her dream, and flew to the fountain in the garden, where she dreamed she saw him. There she found poor Beast stretched out, quite senseless, and, as she imagined, dead. She threw herself upon him without any dread, and finding his heart beat still, she fetched some water from the fountain, and poured it on his head.
The Beast opened his eyes, and said to Beauty, 'You forgot your promise, and I was so afflicted for having lost you, that I resolved to starve myself, but since I have the happiness of seeing you once more, I die satisfied.'
'No, dear Beast,' said Beauty, 'You must not die. Live to be my husband; from this moment I give you my hand, and swear to be none but yours. Alas! I thought I had only a friendship for you, but the grief I now feel convinces me, that I cannot live without you.'"

The theme for "Looking Close on Friday" for Friday 13th of February, being so close to Saint Valentine's Day, is "lovebirds", and I immediately thought of what was perhaps the greatest love story in my childhood, Beauty and the Beast, and here they are underneath a lovely star filled sky. Both are part of a hand painted matryoshka set I have from the Ukraine, with the Beast being the largest in the set and the Beauty being the second largest. If you turn the Beast around, you will find him as a prince on the other side, but I prefer him as the Beast. I hope you like my choice for this week's theme, and that it makes you smile!
I must confess that as a child, I struggled with the idea of Beauty falling in love with the Beast, and he then being turned into a Prince. What I struggled with was the fact that Beauty was in love with the Beast, and yet the Beast was gone. In the classic 1946 surrealist French film "La Belle et la Bête" by Jean Cocteau the Prince asks Beauty whether she regrets his transformation to which she replies, "I shall have to get accustomed to you." Many years later in 1997 when I was an adult, author Robin McKinley wrote a second retelling of Beauty and the Beast (her first being the wonderful adaptation "Beauty" published in 1978 which I love). In her second adaptation "Rose Daughter", when Beauty returns to the Beast and declares her love for him, she is given a choice. Either the Beast returns to his human form and regains his wealth and power, thereby also returning her family to their former status, or he stays as is and they live a peaceful peasant life in the village. Depending on her choice, their names would be spoken throughout the land if she chooses to return Beast to human form. She asks how they will be spoken, and on hearing that it would be in fear and dread, she chooses the peaceful peasant life and the Beast remains as the Beast. The pair return home to Rose Cottage and Beauty's family to live a quiet happily ever after. Perhaps I was not the only one who questioned the Beast's transformation at the end of Jeanne-Marie LePrince de Beaumont's classic faerie tale "La Belle et la Bête"

It has given rise to a number of branches of philosophy and psychology concerning emotion, disease, influence, state of being,"Affection" is popularly used to denote a feeling or type of love, amounting to more than goodwill or friendship. Writers on ethics generally use the word to refer to distinct states of feeling, both lasting and spasmodic. Some contrast it with passion as being free from the distinctively sensual element.
