A white Dahlia flower with a bokeh background.
A dahlia symbolizes strength in adversity – no matter what the challenge might be. They can be used to underline somebody’s commitment and dedication, regardless of the circumstance. Deeper meaning, however, can also be found in the many colours of dahlia flowers.
White dahlias represent the drive to remain focused. They can also symbolize purity, which is a common meaning for white flowers of all kinds – and not just dahlias.

represents the challenges we face in life and reminds us not to let ourselves be defeated. It is a sign of determination to stand up against adversity and forge one's own path.
This is the famous Lone Cypress at Pebble Beach and 17 Mile Drive in Monterey Bay, CA. The 250 year old Lone Cypress has been scarred by fire and held in place with cables for 65 years. A rock wall helps hold up the soil and roots so it continues to grow. A real testament to overcoming adversity against all odds, with help. Build your foundation on rock, not sand.
The rain had fallen for several days. When I ventured outside during one break in the weather, I found this little flower bending toward the ground.
The weight of the water collected on the petals was more than the flower could bear. Upon reflection, I found myself thinking how alike people and plants are.
Life can overwhelm us with outside forces. Being able to bend with the weight of adversity and still rise afterwards is a measure of often unseen strength.
Life.
The feeling that life is an "uphill battle" is a common perception, often arising from the challenges and obstacles we face in pursuing our goals and overcoming adversity. This feeling isn't necessarily literal, but rather a figurative way of expressing the effort and determination required to make progress and achieve success.
At least it was a nice sunny day.

In 1904, a devastating fire left Ålesund in ruins, destroying almost the entire town. But out of the disaster came a masterpiece! Thanks to an inspiring reconstruction effort - and the support of the German Emperor William II - Ålesund was reborn in glorious Art Nouveau style, becoming the architectural jewel that dazzles visitors today.
Today, amidst imposing fjords and sculptured facades, this town is proof that beauty can emerge even from the greatest adversity.
I had to overcome a fair bit of adversity for this shot, most of it my own doing too.
Every night this week, Melbourne has been blessed with colourful sunset. The one time I get a chance to grab the camera and head out, this was as colourful as the sunset got! Blah. No problem, I'll switch to plan 'B', some long exposure photo's. ND filters still sitting on the kitchen table. No problem, just wait a little longer and take some city skyline shots after dark - fully charged battery sitting on the kitchen table next to the ND filters. I only had enough juice in the battery for a couple of shots. I'm happy with this one, but there were far better vantage points I found on the long walk back to the car.

In various cultures, Viper's Bugloss has been seen as a symbol of resilience and protection. The flower's ability to thrive in poor soils and challenging conditions made it a metaphor for endurance. European traditions particularly hold this flower in high regard, associating it with bravery in the face of adversity ... It also has many uses in folk medicine and is the subject of current research as to it´s pharnacological properties.

Perched on the rugged coastline, the weathered old lighthouse stands as a stoic testament to the resilience of those who dedicate their existence to guiding others through life's tempests. Its timeworn facade and chipped paint tell tales of countless storms weathered and relentless winds endured. Much like the steadfast keepers who tended to its beacon, this venerable structure mirrors the human experience of facing adversity. In its solitude, the lighthouse symbolizes the enduring spirit required to navigate the turbulent seas of life, emphasizing that even those who shine a light for others must confront their own struggles and confront the harsh realities of existence. The lighthouse's endurance serves as a poignant reminder that strength is often forged in the crucible of life's storms, and those who lend guidance to others must first navigate the challenges that threaten to dim their own inner light.
The snow, a soft blanket muffling all sound, lay heavy on the world. A small, grey squirrel, its fur a perfect match for the shadows cast by the leafless trees, sat perched atop a snow-covered fence post. Its tiny black eyes, alert and intelligent, scanned the surroundings.
The squirrel, a picture of stillness against the stark winter landscape, twitched its ears, listening intently for any sign of danger. A gust of wind, icy and sharp, whipped through the bare branches, sending a flurry of snowflakes dancing around the creature.
Undeterred, the squirrel remained motionless, its grip firm on the weathered wood. A sense of quiet determination emanated from the small creature, a testament to its resilience in the face of the harsh winter.
The scene, a fleeting moment of winter beauty, captured the essence of a creature perfectly adapted to its environment, a symbol of survival in the face of adversity.

On the shore of the lake, you notice an intricate root system of an Arrayan tree, which bears witness to the challenging life of some trees growing along the edge of these waters, which often experience floods of several meters due to frequent and heavy rains.
The root system is twisted and knotted, with thick roots gripping onto the rocky shore for dear life. You can see how the tree has adapted to the harsh environment, sending out roots in every direction in search of water and nutrients to survive.
Despite the challenges it faces, the Arrayan tree stands tall and proud, its smooth, cinnamon-colored bark shining in the dim light. Its twisted branches stretch out over the water, casting dancing shadows on the lake's surface.
As you contemplate the intricate root system and the determined resilience of the Arrayan tree, you are struck by the beauty and fragility of life in this rugged corner of the world. The forces of nature are powerful and relentless, yet the arrayan tree endures, a symbol of hope and perseverance in the face of adversity.

Hami Dahaidao is a clear example of what a Yadan is. In China there are quite a few of these so-called geological forests and in the province of Xinjiang there are several geological formations with this type of Yadan structure, the most beautiful and well-known being those in the Lop Nur Desert. This one in particular is known as "Devil City" or "Hami Devil City" due to the disturbing and supernatural atmosphere created by the imposing and steep rock formations, which can resemble the ruins of a city, and with a supernatural appearance. In China, it is common to use names similar to this, such as Ghost City, Ghost Desert, the City of the Eight Devils... generic names that increase the supernatural and mystery of these Yadan places. The word Yadan does not have an exact translation into other languages. In the scientific community, the word "yardang" is used to refer to this type of geological formation, which is characteristic of desert areas and is the result of wind erosion. Yardang also has no exact translation into any language. The word Yadan, as a set or the word yardang as a geological formation, are terms that come from Uyghur, a language spoken by the Uygur ethnic group, inhabitants of the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region in northwest China. A yardang is formed from rocks or sediments that are sculpted by the wind, creating elongated ridges, often with parallel grooves, where the different sedimentary strata are clearly distinguished, sometimes in several different colors. They vary in size, from formations a few meters long to others several kilometers long. This erosion process lasts for thousands or millions of years. At first, water currents are the main element of erosion. But when places become arid and waterless, it is then that the wind mostly does the work of shaping or "sculpting" these natural sculptures with elongated and strange shapes. The wind, blowing over the surface, selectively erodes the softer layers of rock or sediment, leaving behind the harder layers in the form of ridges or protuberances. It is a combined action of abrasion by the wearing away of sand particles carried by the wind and by deflation, removing the eroded and loose material from the rock, which is carried away by the wind itself. This aeolian process occurs when the wind always blows in the same direction and constantly collides with the same point of the yardang. That's why yardangs form exclusively in desert areas, where the wind can move at high speed, raising large quantities or dust clouds of sand. The tiny grains of suspended sand impact the yardang rock, eroding it imperceptibly. This erosion process acts as a natural sculptor, carving unique, often fantastical and fanciful shapes into the landscape. These yardangs, sculpted by nature, over time, after thousands or millions of years of being patiently shaped by the wind, are eventually completely destroyed and simply turned into dust and sand. The Great Sphinx of Giza, for example, was originally a yardang that began to erode more than 40,000 years ago. It was sculpted by nature, especially by the wind, and eventually, the Egyptians of the Pharaonic period used it as material to carve the Sphinx. Yadan or yardang landscapes tend to have elongated shapes, with one side exposed to the wind, which is usually steeper, and the other, gentler, on the opposite side. However, this erosion can give rise to very diverse forms, such as narrow ridges, mushroom-shaped structures, formations with a parallel structure of sedimentary strata, or very complex and imaginative structures. The Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region is located in the extreme northwest of China and is the largest province in the country. This region, located in Central Asia, has a semi-arid to arid climate and is abundant in deserts and dry, arid areas. The best known is the Taklamakan Desert, which is the second largest desert on the planet. Another is the Gurbantunggut Desert, but this Lop Nur Desert is probably the most beautiful, being a Yadan landscape, where yardang formations abound. Xinjiang has a complex ethnic composition, as it is inhabited primarily by Uygurs, but also by Mongols, Russians, Han ethnic groups, Hui, Xibe, Tibetans, Kazakhs, Kyrgyz, and Tajiks. This is because this vast province borders countries as diverse and different as Mongolia, or at the opposite extreme, India, Pakistan, and Afghanistan. It also shares borders with Russia and the former Soviet republics of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and... Tajikistan.
Badlands is an Anglicism used to refer to wastelands, which are especially prevalent in the United States and are similar to yardangs. But Bruce Springsteen's song speaks of a different kind of barren or wasteland. He uses the term "Badlands" metaphorically to refer to other equally real places or situations. It's a song about resilience, perseverance, and hope amidst the adversity that is often encountered throughout life.

Okie - J. J. Cale (1974)
An admirable "star" who sadly faded. The best.
....
It's hard to decide which is J.J. Cale's best album. My favorite might be "5," but "Okie" is possibly Cale's most authentic. The album's title gives a clear reference to his roots. John Weldon Cale was born in Oklahoma City and grew up in Tulsa, a city that shaped his life. J.J. Cale is key to understanding what was called the "Tulsa sound," a musical genre that blends blues, rockabilly, and country. An Okie is a person who belongs to the state of Oklahoma. Okies have their own culture, dialect, music, and folklore. In other parts of the United States, such as California, the word "Okie" is used to refer to the very poor migrants from Oklahoma who arrived in search of work, fleeing the Great Depression. The "Okie" migration developed primarily during the 1930s. One of the most famous photographs in existence is "Migrant Mother" (1936) by Dorothea Lange, considered an iconic image of the Great Depression. It is a portrait of Florence Owens Thompson, an "okie" migrant, gazing anxiously into the distance, with a baby on her lap and two children huddled around her, reflecting the plight of farmworkers who migrated to California during the Great Depression. Although the most common meaning of "okie" is simply someone who was born or lives in Oklahoma or as a term to describe migrants from Oklahoma, it has occasionally been used as a pejorative word, as is often the case with all migration movements.

One of my favourite movies is called "The Rabbit Proof Fence"
"Rabbit-Proof Fence" is a powerful Australian drama film released in 2002, directed by Phillip Noyce. It’s based on the true story of three Aboriginal girls and adapted from the book Follow the Rabbit-Proof Fence by Doris Pilkington Garimara, the daughter of one of the girls.
Set in 1931, during a time when the Australian government had a policy of forcibly removing mixed-race Aboriginal children from their families (part of what's now known as the Stolen Generations), the film follows: Molly Craig (14 years old), Her younger sister Daisy Kadibil (8), Their cousin Gracie Fields (10)
These girls are taken from their home in Jigalong, Western Australia, and placed in the Moore River Native Settlement, over 1,500 miles away, where they are to be trained as domestic servants and assimilated into white society.
Determined to return to their family and traditional way of life, the girls escape from the settlement. Guided only by their wits and the rabbit-proof fence (a real fence that stretched across Western Australia to keep rabbits out of farming land), they make an extraordinary journey across the harsh Australian outback. Along the way, they are pursued by A.O. Neville (played by Kenneth Branagh), the Chief Protector of Aborigines, who believes in the assimilation policy, and Moodoo, an Aboriginal tracker working for the authorities.
Themes: Racism and colonialism: It confronts the harsh policies of the time and the belief in white superiority. Family and identity: It powerfully shows the bond between children and their heritage. Survival and resilience: The girls' strength and determination in the face of adversity are central.
"Rabbit-Proof Fence" brought international attention to the Stolen Generations and the trauma caused by Australia's assimilation policies. It remains an important film in Australian cinema for its historical significance and emotional depth. HFF

It’s a bittersweet feeling I have today as it would be the last day of some of the people I got to know at work. It’s ironic too as today is May Day. Some have not fully absorbed what happened and still in shock. I am thankful I was retained but I feel so bad for them, I feel their pain and anxiety. I have shared with them my favorite quote “Every adversity has within it the seed of an equivalent or greater benefit.” All I can do is pray for them, support them emotionally and wish that they may be able to find a job soon.
What a week it has been! I wish my friends / co-workers all the best. I believe that every leaf has a new beginning especially on spring time.

A helicopter conducts an evacuation on the summit of Tryfan and takes off towards the West down the Ogwen Valley.
Taken back in October last Year whilst I was descending Pen Yr Ole Wen. My attention was drawn to the Mountain by the sound of the helicopter hovering around the summit and I managed a couple of shots before the helicopter made off.
It reminded me of my days engaged with Mountain Rescue and meetings at nearby Plas Y Brenin. The work of our Mountain Rescue Teams has increased significantly in recent times and their efforts often go unnoticed. It is often only in the face of tragedy and adversity we remember and fully appreciate their selfless efforts!
I had forgotten about this until I was going through my files and tidying up my images from 2020. I thought a mono conversion suited this better.
This is "Meisie". She is completely blind as was taken in by my family I am visiting. Since then they have also been told that she had her vocal cords cut. She was found abandoned at a motorway service station.
Not my normal type of pictures but Had to just share this shot as she is just wonderful as she has adapted with not being able to see at all. She waddles around but loves to get close to people. Amazing grit and endurance I think. Shame on whoever abandoned her!

THE HIVE
Design Team: Kathleen Dogantzis & Will Cuthbert (Canada)
Description
The resilience witnessed among communities in the face of challenging and unprecedented times is paralleled among the honey bee. Honey bee colonies are primary composed of worker bees whose greatest measure of resilience is maintaining hive temperature throughout the cold winter months. This is achieved by adapting worker behaviour to use energy from stored honey to generate body heat within a tight hive cluster. The challenge of keeping the hive warm is met by a colony level response – much like the collaborative community level response that is mounted in the face of adversity.
The installation is designed with a hexagonal structure reminiscent of a honey bee colony, and it highlights the colour variation of honey, which is the result of diverse floral resources. Individuals are welcomed to experience the visual diversity of a honey bee hive and work together to form a collaborative community level hive cluster.
Death, in Brief Lives by Neil Gaiman...
I saw this in BBC news today, an exhibition by Judith Fox, where she chronicled with photographs the life of her husband who was diagnosed with Alzheimer, 3 yrs into their marriage. I know life is fragile and sometimes I need to remind myself of those little blessings we have with our love ones. When I stumble upon love like these, it never fails to astound me, the depth of human emotions and strength in times of adversity...
