The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation who oversee the dam's operation commissioned Oskar J.W. Hanson to work on a memorial to honor the accomplishments and sacrifices made by those who worked and died in building the dam. For Oskar the sculptures represented "a monument to collective genius exerting itself in community efforts around a common need or ideals." Hanson in many ways adopted some of the core tenets that inspired many of the great Art Deco artists and architects, looking at the very power of humanity to achieve greatness in the face of adversity. When looking at the two large winged figures that stand tall next to the walls of Black Canyon, they "can be read as the characteristics of these men [who build the dam], and on a larger scale the community of which they are part. Thus, mankind itself is the subject of the sculptures..."

In 1827, under the leadership of James McMillan, a dedicated group of workers undertook the ambitious project of constructing Fort Langley at the confluence of the Fraser River and the Bedford Channel. Their objective was to create a prominent trading post for the Hudson's Bay Company, marking a significant chapter in the region's history. Throughout the construction process, the laborers confronted a myriad of challenges, ranging from unforgiving weather conditions to the demanding and rugged landscape. Despite these adversities, Fort Langley emerged triumphant, evolving into a pivotal hub for trade and catalyzing the economic development of the surrounding area. This historic outpost not only fulfilled its initial purpose but also earned the distinction of being the birthplace of Western Canada.

South Africans have a remarkable history of the triumph of the will to thrive over adversity. In deliberate contrast to the previous picture, this admittedly photo-shopped picture, reflects that triumph. This is one of a pair of iconic cooling towers, the concrete reminders of a decommissioned coal power-station, that were taken over by a bank and which have been painted in brilliant colours. These cheerful and tall towers are a popular site for bungee jumping!

♫♫You And Your Sister♫♫

In a world that often feels chaotic and ever-changing, my beautiful Sister Jamey stands as my unwavering shelter, a beacon of hope amidst the storms of life. With an understanding heart, she sees beyond the surface, recognizing my struggles and fears without me having to utter a word.

It's hard to be an Angel in a world filled with shadows, and when I lose my own belief and trust in humans, she embraces me with her invisible wings, providing solace when darkness looms around me. When I feel lost, she is the light that guides me back, whispering to me that we are never truly alone.

Her presence is a gentle reminder that even in our most challenging moments, there is always room for reflection and growth. Through her tender love, I find peace — a reassurance that no matter how much the reality changes, and the doors are closing in some way, the essence of who we are is untouchable.

She teaches me that in the face of adversity, it is vital to be true to oneself, embodying strength and authenticity, even as the tides of life shift. In her, I have found not only a Sister but a Sanctuary, where hope flourishes and love knows no bounds.

Description

In keeping with this year’s theme of resilience, we chose to base our design on the emotions felt throughout the past two years’ worth of quarantine and isolation. Playing with the idea of reflection, we utilize mirrored walls to cast the visitors as the subjects of our bright red pavilion, titled Introspection. While the trellis roof allows the sun to illuminate the interior and its visitors, the red lifeguard tower stands unyielding in the centre of the pavilion, reminding us of the inherent stability within us. In highlighting the subject’s presence, we hope to promote introspection into one’s own emotional resilience as one faces their own reflection. From afar, Introspection appears to float on the beach’s horizon. Behaving like a visual constant in the wild, Introspection and the lifeguard towers remind us that no matter what the whirlwinds of life may bring, they endure it all and remain resilient to adversity.

**The Pawn's Gambit**

In the heart of the Chess Kingdom, nestled between towering rooks and elegant bishops, stood the prestigious Chess Academy – a place where the fate of the kingdom's battles was decided not by swords and shields, but by the strategic maneuvering of pieces on a checkered battlefield.

On a crisp morning, the newest recruits to the Academy gathered nervously in the courtyard, their polished wooden forms gleaming in the sunlight. Among them were the pawns – humble foot soldiers, eager to prove themselves on the battlefield of the mind.

Leading the recruits was Sergeant Rook, a seasoned veteran whose stoic demeanor belied his years of experience. With a thunderous voice that echoed across the courtyard, he addressed the assembled pieces.

"Welcome, recruits, to the Chess Academy," he boomed. "Here, you will undergo the most rigorous training to become the finest warriors the kingdom has ever seen. You will learn to think not as individuals but as a unified force, each piece playing its part in the grand strategy of the game."

The pawns exchanged nervous glances, their determination outweighing their apprehension. They knew that the road ahead would be challenging, but they were ready to face it head-on.

For days on end, they immersed themselves in training, learning the intricacies of movement and the art of capturing opponents. They practiced formations, honed their defensive skills, and studied the tactics of past battles. But it wasn't just physical training they underwent; it was mental conditioning as well. They learned to anticipate their opponents' moves, to think several steps ahead, and to recognize patterns on the battlefield.

As the weeks passed, the pawns began to transform. No longer were they mere foot soldiers; they were chess warriors, ready to defend their kingdom against any threat. And then came the day of their final test – a simulated battle against the kingdom's most formidable opponents. Across the board, the pieces **stood poised**, their wooden forms charged with purpose.

The bishops angled their moves, seeking to control diagonals and influence the center. The knights leaped in L-shaped bounds, surprising their opponents. The rooks swept across ranks and files, guarding their territory. And the pawns? They advanced cautiously, knowing that their role was crucial – the foundation upon which the entire strategy rested.

The tension in the room was palpable as the battle unfolded. Each move carried consequences, and the pawns felt the weight of responsibility. They remembered Sergeant Rook's words: "Think as a unified force." And so they did. They coordinated attacks, sacrificed themselves for greater gains, and protected their comrades.

In the end, victory was not assured, but the pawns fought valiantly. They held their ground, pushed forward, and even promoted to queens – a transformation that symbolized their growth from humble foot soldiers to powerful leaders.

As the dust settled and the pieces were returned to their starting positions, the recruits looked around. They had faced adversity, tested their mettle, and emerged stronger. The Chess Academy had forged them into more than warriors; it had shaped them into strategists, thinkers, and guardians of the realm.

And so, in the quiet of the courtyard, the pawns stood tall – not just as pieces on a board, but as symbols of resilience, unity, and the indomitable spirit of the Chess Kingdom.

The etymology of Pancratium maritimum L. embodies the resistance of this plant, so much so that the name of the genus derives from the Greek pankrátion, fruit of the union of "pan" (all) and "cratys" (powerful, strong). It is singular to note that pankrátion in ancient Greece was a sport in which boxing and wrestling merged in which every figure aimed at knocking down the opponent was allowed. The reference between a discipline based on the strength and resistance of the flower to environmental adversities is emblematic. The specific epithet "maritimus" (maritime) derives from the Latin and returns the habitat of the species.

For Lancia, the Aprilia, produced from 1937 - 1949, simultaneously marked the end of one era and the beginning of another. Technologically speaking, this was a supremely refined model, with a load-bearing body, a compact narrow V engine, independent suspension on all four wheels and extremely innovative aerodynamic lines.

During the 1920s, the invention of wind tunnels allowed industrial designers to seek new levels of performance for motor vehicles by improving their aerodynamics. In the United States, “streamline design” was all the rage, a trend for producing sinuous and aerodynamic lines, starting with airplanes, then trains and then cars, increasing their speed but also emphasizing their extravagant stylistic features.

This movement reached Italy in the 1930s when streamlining, a symbol of modernity, inspired the lines of the new Lancia Aprilia. But compared to the American style, Vincenzo Lancia’s trusted designer Battista Falchetto - who had shared the honors for the stunning design of the Lambda - created a car with fewer frills and more concrete lines, aimed at improving aerodynamics. The grille and windscreen were therefore slightly inclined, and the egg shape - considered at the time the most efficient profile from an aerodynamic point of view - gave character to the rear part. The compact and streamlined bonnet was made possible by the small size of the narrow V engine... an authentic concentrate of technology. It consisted of a light alloy monobloc with cast iron barrels, V valves controlled by rockers moved by an overhead camshaft and a hemispherical top on the combustion chamber. With only 1,352 cc it generated 48 HP which, thanks also to a total weight of only 850 kg, plus an excellent aerodynamic coefficient of just 0.47, thrust the Aprilia up to 125 km/h.

The Aprilia was a true Piedmontese aristocrat, refined and precise in every detail. Its famous four pillarless doors, a true Lancia icon, also have an extraordinary curved profile and invisible hinges. The famous click - the sound of the doors closing - underlined the scrupulous attention to the smallest details in design and assembly which typified Lancia’s outstanding modus operandi, providing an unforgettable grace note. The interiors, especially in the Luxury version, featured a classy geometric instrument panel on a grey background with black and white graphics: the square speedometer and clock perfectly matched with the rectangles chosen for the thermometer and the fuel gauge. The Lancia cloth upholstery (available on request in leather), the door panels, the roof covering and the rubber mats were the final touches of a creation which was the closest possible motorcar version of the classic Turin interiors of the period.

Its extremely low weight was mainly due to the load-bearing body: a Lancia patent - first seen in the 1920s on the Lambda - which, by overcoming the classic architecture which kept the chassis and bodywork separate, improved torsional rigidity and significantly reduced volumes. The independent suspension on all four wheels, with rear transversal leaf spring and front coil springs, enabled the Lancia Aprilia to offer road grip and passenger comfort that was much superior to most of its contemporary rivals.

The Lancia Aprilia contained all the most innovative and refined technical solutions that were so dear to Vincenzo Lancia. It constituted a pinnacle of motorcar production, carried out under the direct supervision of the founder of the Turin company. The name of the car came from that of an ancient Lazio town: a characteristic that linked it to its predecessors, the Artena and the Astura.

The Lancia Aprilia was presented to the public at the thirtieth edition of the Paris Motor Show, in October 1936. On February 15, 1937 its creator had a sudden and fatal heart attack, just before the car went into production. He was only 55 years old. Thus the Aprilia became universally seen as the spiritual testament of Vincenzo Lancia, becoming a huge commercial success, which continued even after the adversities of the second World War.

The first series of the Lancia Aprilia was produced from 1937 to 1939 in 10,354 units: a Sedan in standard and Luxury trims, to which were added 4,350 chassis for custom-made versions, on which the best Italian coachbuilders reveled in producing streamlined and elegant spiders and cabriolets. Pinin Farina's aerodynamic coupé was highly original, with its characteristic flattened muzzle, the central position of the 2 + 2 passenger compartment and an elegant tail.

Two years after the start of production, the second series was born, characterized by the increase in displacement to 1,486 cc. The power remained unchanged, but this improved the elasticity of the engine and the maximum speed. Despite a weight increase to 950 kg, it gained 1 km/h. In the decade from 1939-1949, 11,082 sedans were produced plus 2,252 chassis for coachbuilders.

The production of the Aprilia continued - with a further 703 exemplars - even after the Second World War, a period in which the model, despite being almost ten years old, could still be proud of its highly modern mechanics and settings. It held its place in the market right up to the last days of production, and in racing it remained the undisputed dominator of the Tourism class up to 1500 cc for years: it also triumphed in the Mille Miglia of 1947 thanks to its powerful acceleration and peerless road holding.

To this day, more than eighty years after its presentation, the Aprilia is considered a timeless pioneering car which, by gathering all the best of Lancia’s innovative philosophy, inaugurated a new era in motoring. Vincenzo Lancia was usually hypercritical about his cars, but after test driving the Aprilia prototype he spontaneously exclaimed: "What a magnificent car!".

My way of paying homage and say thank you to a lady who passed away today from the village where I grew up in my home country of Mauritius.

I did not know her particularly well since I left Mauritius years ago, but I discovered her big heart, her generosity and kindness in adversity. She was there to offer a helping hand when my Uncle was ill and she was a rock years later when my Mum was not well.

She gave me the glass in the picture as a birthday present some 11 years ago. I was touched then, and today I grieve her passing. Rest in peace kind kind soul.

Taken outside the Hammer Museum waiting for my son to get off work. Charlotte had an adversity to having her picture taken and kept bobbing and weaving. Both kids complained to me about over processing shots, too much saturation and the removal of blemishes, which I am guilty of and figure part of my learning curve. But with this shot I have to say my daughter has perfect skin, so everything was left intact. With shots of my children I loose all objectivity, to me all their photos look good.

There's a simple philosophy found among bridge designers: if a crossing deserves to have a bridge, it deserves to have a great bridge.

Bridges represent technology, triumph over adversity, and ingenuity, so they tend to become important landmarks. Among the crossings to proudly boast a great bridge is the San Diego Bay in California, home to the award-winning San Diego-Coronado Bridge (more often simply referred to as the Coronado Bridge).

It took a while for people to decide whether or not the San Diego Bay really needed a bridge, but once they decided that it did, they knew they wanted a great one.

The Coronado Bridge is frequently used as a suicide bridge; as of July 2017, at least 405 suicide deaths by bridge jumpers have occurred on the Coronado, trailing only the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco as the bridge most-often used for suicide in the United States

The once majestic vessel now lay battered and broken, its hull marred by jagged crevices and splintered wood. Each crack told a story of tumultuous journeys endured upon unforgiving waves. The ship, once a symbol of strength and resilience, now seemed frail and vulnerable against the relentless sea. Yet, amidst the wreckage, there lingered a whisper of defiance—a testament to the resilience of those who had sailed her. Like scars etched upon weathered skin, each fracture bore witness to the trials faced and conquered. Though broken, the ship stood as a reminder that even in the face of adversity, hope and the spirit of survival endure.

A small, vibrant flash of red against the stark backdrop of the winter woods, its breast a fiery beacon against the muted tones of the frozen landscape.

The Robin, with its cheerful song, seems oblivious to the biting cold. It tugs at a patch of moss, searching for insects, a tiny survivor in the face of winter's harsh embrace. Its presence brings a touch of warmth and life to the otherwise desolate scene, a reminder that even in the depths of winter, life persists.

The Robin, a symbol of resilience and courage, continues its search, a testament to the enduring spirit of nature in the face of adversity.

When passing by my favorite Oak tree this past cold, December morning I saw this scene and was in awe. Some people see a fearful scene of gloominess but I see an inspiration of power in adversity. I suppose that is the reason I entitled it as such. I hope you love it as much as I do.
