If you have ever been to the lovely North Yorkshire market town of Thirsk, you may have seen lots of knitting and crochet displays around the town, in particular the Market Place. On bollards, in the trees, in shop windows, even over the church. It’s called “yarn bombing” and Thirsk has a very active group of wonderful and very talented ladies.
It all began at the end of 2015 when a lady called Sam heard that the Tour de Yorkshire was coming through Thirsk and put a message on Facebook. Within a week word got round, and a small group of knitters and crocheters had expanded to over 100, who decided to ”make a few flags” to hang around the town.
The group became much bigger and the ideas much more imaginative, and by the time of the race in April 2016 over 300 people had become involved. On a dark and cold night, three degrees minus at two o’clock in the morning, a week before the race, the Yarnbombers of Thirst donned dark clothing, balaclavas and masks, and “bombed” the whole of the town… bollards, blankets round tree trunks, wonderful creations hanging in trees, knitted flags fastened along fences, and every shop had a knitted item relating to its particular trade fastened to its door handle. The next morning, word got round very quickly, and after a short sleep the Yarnbombers walked around town to see lots and lots of people taking photographs, and chatting, all with big smiles on their faces.
Since then there’s been no stopping them. They have decorated a carriage on the Grand Central train at King’s Cross Station, been on the Welcome to Yorkshire stand at the Great Yorkshire Show and “bombed” an articulated lorry and a tractor. Thirsk Market Place has been decorated several times more, including a celebration of 100 years since the birth of Thirsk based Alf Wright, known throughout the world as James Herriot, author of “All Creatures Great and Small” and other stories about his life as a county vet.
Probably their most moving work was for Remembrance Sunday in 2016 when more than 35,000 red poppies were made and stitched onto yards and yards of army camouflage netting which was then draped along the walls of St Mary’s Church, All Saints RC Church and the Methodist Church in Thirsk and St Oswald’s Church in Sowerby. The poppies also hung down like a waterfall on clear netting from the top of St Mary’s. Some of these poppies were made by people who had heard of the Yarnbombers, but had no idea where Thirsk was! Poppies were brought or posted, many anonymously, some from as far away as Australia, and some were actually crafted on a beach in Normandy.
The present decorations celebrate voluntary groups and organisations and the town was “Yarnbombed” with them on Sunday morning the 14th April 2019. Their Facebook page is called “Thirsk Yarnbombers visitors book” and is well worth a look.

Notes: Pascal Sébah (1823–1886) was a photographer in Constantinople (now Istanbul) and Cairo, who produced a prolific number of images of Egypt, Turkey and Greece to serve the tourist trade. Pascal Sébah was born in Constantinople, then the capital of the Ottoman Empire, to a Syrian Catholic father and an Armenian mother. He initially worked in collaboration with the French photographer, Henri Bechard. After receiving medals at the International Exhibition in Paris, he decided to open his own studio in Istanbul in 1857. Sébah's studio was known as ''El Chark (meaning "The Orient"), situated at 439 Grande Rue de Pera in the center of the city and close by the Embassies and hotels where tourists congregated. Sébah primarily produced photographs for the tourist trade. By the second half of the 19th-century, tourist travel to Egypt had created strong demand for photographs as souvenirs. Sébah was amongst a group of early photographers, who made their way to Cairo and Istanbul to capitalise on this demand. By 1873 Sébah was successful enough to open a second studio in Cairo. He exhibited at Ottoman exhibition in Vienna, Austria in 1873. He established a valuable working relationship with Turkish painter Osman Hamdi Bey taking photographs as part of the artist's preparation and in which he experimented with light and shade. In turn, Hamdi Bey selected Sébah to illustrate his text on the popular costumes worn by Turkish people, entitled Les Costumes Populaires de la Turquie en 1873: ouvrage publié sous le patronage de la Commission impériale ottomane pour l'Exposition universelle de Vienne published in 1873. Following his death on 25 June 1886, the studio continued in business. It was managed by his brother, Cosmi, and in 1888 Pollicarpe Joiallier became a partner. At this time the company was renamed Sebah & Joaillier. Pascal's son, Jean Pascal Sébah, also joined in 1888 and went on to run the studio with other photographers. The firm developed a reputation as the leading representative of Orientalist photography and in 1889 was appointed the Photographers by Appointment to the Prussian Court. Sébah's studio continued operations, in one form or another, until 1952 at the same address then moved until its closure in 1973. (source: Wikipedia).

You don't have to comment on this photo, because I deleted the last one (that worm thing scared me after a while). But on a deeper level, I post things here sometimes for the wrong reason. This time I'm submitting it because I believe in it and don't care if anyone else wishes to validate it.
Right now I'm very stressed. I just became incorporated as a photography business and I'm applying for project grants to show in galleries. The gallery owners are all about money and product, and so I've been really trapped in this. My mission is to provoke storytelling in my community with the photos I create. Storytelling that provokes thought and opens minds to new ideas.
Then I saw this star flower on the ground. Lately I've been finding a lot of things on the ground, and think these things are sometimes very important. This flower is in a glass by my computer to remind me of what's important. I love all the submissions this week and always look forward to seeing what you all produce, and I'm also so amazed at how confident most of you are.

Shot from the airplane on exit from Seattle. I may have missed the deadline for AAW, but still it was a magical moment on the plane over Seattle en route back to Nashville.
Mount Rainier is a large, active stratovolcano in the Cascade Range of the Pacific Northwest in the United States. It is the fifth-highest peak in the contiguous 48 states, standing at 14,410 feet. The mountain is located within Mount Rainier National Park, about 59 miles south-southeast of Seattle.
Esmail and crew made the rounds to all the I.E. Active locations on Black Friday morning to serve hot chocolate and giveaway some free Mugs. Went to Active Rancho, Chino, Chino Hills, Corona, Temecula, and Riverside. Overall the shops did successful that day!

The Active Badge was conceived, design and prototyped between 1989 and 1992. The small device, worn by a user, transmits a unique infrared signal every ten seconds. Locations within a building are equipped with one or more networked sensors that detect these transmissions. The location of the badge and its wearer is determined by the information provided by these sensors. In its original form, the badge transmitted a unique five-bit code every fifteen seconds. Successive versions expanded the functionality and address-space size of the badge, and incorporated a small microprocessor, offering bi-directional communication and a 48-bit address. A simpler version was designed for tagging equipment, and location to the desk scale, rather than the office scale, was achieved by using low-powered radio fields. One of PARC's active badges notifies computer researchers when a fresh pot of coffee is brewed.

Active Assignment Weekly Feb. 11 - 18: The Colour of Beauty
WIT: This is my jewelry tree, upon which hangs only a small fraction of my earrings. In order to hang all my earrings up, I would need a jewelry forest, I'm afraid! I set it on one of my favourite scarves, as I was going for an "antique" colour palette. The light came from the window, which reflected well on the white branches of the tree, since there wasn't that much light coming in, as you can see by the darker background. In post, adjusted the colours just a little, and cropped to 8 by 10.

I saw these sunglasses and the thought behind the photo was to take a selfie, but to merge me with the leaves a bit.
