N777GA Canadair Challenger CL600S built in 1982.

Only around thirty of these first generation Challengers appear to be active. Some seventy or so were built before the CL601 upgrade.

In order to eliminate back pain that already bothers you or to stay away from injuries that may occur from day to day activities, it is important to keep the core strong and flexible. There is a number of exercises doctors and personal trainers advise you to do, but how about that time of the day when you are not able to attend a gym or hit the floor for some "ME" time?

There is a solution - SpinaliS chairs for active sitting. As a matter of fact that is the BEST SOLUTION because you don't have to do anything, but sit. At the first glance the SpinaliS chair looks like a well designed regular office chair, but there is a difference - a spring under its seat, which forces your body to keep itself in the balance thus working out your core muscles that in return will help you to get rid of the back pain and will improve your posture.

Check out SpinaliS Apollo Series chairs, which is an ideal choice for women or men with a smaller body type:

www.spinalis-chairs.ca/spinalis-chairs/apollo/

What the Core Does?

The area of the body, which is commonly referred to as the core, is your midsection and it involves all your muscles in that area including the front, back and sides. The core includes the traverse abdominis (TVA), erector spinae, obliques and your lower lats.

These muscles work as stabilizers for the entire body. Core training is simply doing specific exercises to develop and strengthen these stabilizer muscles.

If any of these core muscles are weakened, it could result in lower back pain or a protruding waistlines. Keeping these core muscles strong can do wonders for your posture and help give you more strength in other exercises like running, walking or sitting on a SpinaliS chair.

Active Assignment Weekly Feb. 11 - 18: The Colour of Beauty

WIT: This is my jewelry tree, upon which hangs only a small fraction of my earrings. In order to hang all my earrings up, I would need a jewelry forest, I'm afraid! I set it on one of my favourite scarves, as I was going for an "antique" colour palette. The light came from the window, which reflected well on the white branches of the tree, since there wasn't that much light coming in, as you can see by the darker background. In post, adjusted the colours just a little, and cropped to 8 by 10.

Active Assignment Weekly: Out of the blue

What it took: Cropped slightly on the right, blue filter.

I saw these sunglasses and the thought behind the photo was to take a selfie, but to merge me with the leaves a bit.

Active forest fire station, located in Paryshiv village.

-- The Canon 10-22 lens is surprisingly fun for geology. We love context and for that wide is better. For closeups you just put it a foot or so from the outcrop and click away. This is one of those "notes to self" as I often figure out cool things and then struggle to remember the details when I go back years later --

I sort of stumbled across this on my day off. The sedimentary deposit was pretty cool all by itself but its relationship to active tectonics in California raises it to another level.

------------------------------------------------

An outcrop of "Año Nuevo fan" deposit in a down-dropped block between the Frijoles and Coastways splays of the San Gregorio-Hosgri fault system. This is an active strike-slip fault system outboard of the San Andreas on the Santa Cruz County Coast. The fan deposit is one of our best records of it's activity and movement.

Subtle extension along this section of the fault zone has resulted in subsidence and accommodation of several 10-15 foot thick young alluvial deposits along the axis of the fault system on the Año Nuevo terrace. These deposits are found cut-off and dragged north relative to their respective source streams. This fact can be used to constrain the direction and rate of local fault movement -- a right lateral offset of 5 to 11 mm / year during the Holocene along the San Gregorio-Hosgri fault system -- perhaps 10 to 20 percent of the total right-lateral strain in central California.

Charcoal fragments date the base of this particular deposit to the early Holocene (12,000 years before present). Lower units in the graben fill include clean beach sands and organic rich estuarine muds (seen at the base of the outcrop here) with erosive meandering conglomerate filled channels. These indicate deposition at or near sea-level. The upper units (making up the bulk of the outcrop seen here) consist of tabular conglomerates , thin discontinuous shales, and mudflow deposits. It is interpreted to be a terrestrial braid plain filling the down-dropped block on the terrace between subsidence events.

Clasts in the conglomerates consist largely of local Miocene shale (probably from the underlying Purisima Formation or perhaps the Santa Cruz Mudstone found to the east of the San Gregorio Fault). The thick proximal mudflow unit half way up the outcrop behaved plastically during and following emplacement -- injecting down into underlying gravels and erupting through overlying gravels to the "paleo-surface". Cobbles in the upper unit show strong imbrication and indicate westward paleocurrents. Channels in the lower unit run generally westward. Although the deposit is now cross-cut by Año Nuevo Creek, the age and nature of the deposit are consistent with derivation from Finney Creek, 2000 feet to the southwest.

The San Gregorio Fault system shows no evidence of aseismic creep and is expected to generate a large earthquakes in the future. 5-9 separate past surface-rupture events have been inferred from relationships on the Año Nuevo marine terrace.

Fort Preble

Secretary of War Henry A. S. Dearborn started construction of Fort Preble in 1808 and named it in honor of Commodore Edward Preble, who led a squadron of American warships during the Barbary Wars.

Along with Fort Scammel on nearby House Island, Fort Preble was built to deter attack by a hostile power in the event the United States was considered a belligerent in the ongoing conflict between Great Britain and Napoleonic France. In October 1808, Dearborn ordered a company of soldiers to occupy the fort and instructed them to do whatever was necessary to enforce the Embargo Act against embargo-breaking ships. The embargo was finally lifted in March 1809 when President James Madison took office.

War of 1812

Various units manned Fort Preble during the War of 1812. Among them were elements of the Regiment of Light Artillery, the 21st, 33rd, and 34th Regiments of Infantry, as well as U.S. Volunteers — and in times of crisis local militia. When Winfield Scott and other American soldiers returned from British imprisonment in Quebec, they were landed at Fort Preble. Many of them were emaciated and ill, and some died at the post's hospital.

From 1848-1849 and from 1851-1853, Fort Preble was commanded by Captain Robert Anderson who would become famous for his heroic defense of Fort Sumter at the start of the Civil War.

Civil War

During the American Civil War, Fort Preble became the headquarters and recruiting depot of the 17th Infantry Regiment and was also mobilization site for volunteer regiments recruited in Maine.

Soldiers from the fort saw action when Confederate Army raiders entered Portland Harbor on June 26, 1863, aboard a captured ship named Archer. The Confederates captured the United States Revenue Cutter Caleb Cushing the next day, and attempted an escape in an action known as the Battle of Portland Harbor. They were pursued by two steamers carrying soldiers and artillery pieces from Fort Preble, as well as about 100 civilian volunteers. Light wind made escape impossible and the Confederates abandoned the Caleb Cushing in boats after setting the ship on fire. The fire detonated the ship's magazines and the Cushing was destroyed by the explosion. Twenty-three Confederate prisoners were captured and taken to Fort Preble. They remained at Fort Preble until they were transferred to prisoner of war camps.

During this action, Fort Preble was commanded by Major George Lippitt Andrews. (Not to be confused with Brevet Major General George Leonard Andrews.) Andrews was a native of Rhode Island who was appointed lieutenant colonel of the 1st Missouri Infantry at the start of the war. He was mustered out of volunteer service in September 1861 and was commissioned in the Regular Army as the major of the 17th Infantry. He was promoted to lieutenant colonel in 1864. In January 1871 he was promoted to colonel and assigned as commander of the 25th Infantry. He commanded the 25th Infantry for 21 years until he retired from the Army in 1892. [1]

Post Civil War

In the late 1800s Fort Preble was modernized under the supervision of Army engineer Thomas Lincoln Casey who is best known for overseeing the completion of the Washington Monument. These improvements included added emplacements for large caliber guns behind earthen parapets as masonry walls were found to be ineffective against rifled artillery shells.

20th Century

In the early 1900s several modern Endicott era coast defense batteries were installed at the fort. These new batteries included two batteries of eight 12-inch mortars, two "disappearing" 6-inch guns and two 3-inch guns.

The fort remained active through World War I and was used during World War II as a naval net depot for net laying ships and as a control station for the Casco Bay degaussing range.[2] Most of the fort's guns were removed in 1942 and the last was removed in 1946.

After World War II it was determined that coast defense forts were obsolete and Fort Preble, along with most forts of its kind, was inactivated in 1950.

Educational institution

In 1952 the fort was sold to the State of Maine and became the campus of the Southern Maine Vocational Technical Institute (SMVTI) which was renamed In 1989 as Southern Maine Technical College (SMTC) and later to Southern Maine Community College (SMCC).

Some of Fort Preble's original early 20th Century brick buildings (including officer's quarters, barracks and a fire station) remain and are in a good state of preservation.

Spring Point Ledge Light was built near the site in 1897. A 900-foot (270 m) granite breakwater that extends from the fort and surrounds the lighthouse was later added in 1951.

The Camden Active Spaces project saw outdoor spaces in seven of Camden’s primary and secondary schools transformed by uniquely designed structures to inspire our children and young people to get moving more.

LUC met with students, parents and residents to help shape what the spaces would look like. This in-depth survey and analysis informed our designs, which included bespoke elements such as trampolines, climbing towers, nets, trails and monkey bars.

Active Assignment Weekly - February 14 - 21: Portrait

WIT: Since the assignment's dare was to take a picture of strangers, I thought I'd give it a try. While taking pictures at the park, I happened upon this couple sitting on a bench. The gentleman struck up a conversation about cameras, and soon we were exchanging tales of lost cameras that were miraculously returned from foreign countries. I took a picture of this couple, who gladly obliged. Although I was bothered by the hair in her face, the man insisted he liked her hair that way, so who am I to say...Of course, I sent them a copy. I hope they like it.

Taken with my 50mm/1.4 (my fave portrait lens at the moment) in natural light, converted to BW; I chose the high-contrast tones because I felt it suited their personalities, from what i could glean from our talk.

There was an intense downpour today which I had the misfortune of being caught in without an umbrella. Not that it would have done much good considering the high winds as you can see from a victim discarded on Bloor Street West.

Notes: In 1822, Daguerre opened his first 350-seat diorama theater. The diorama consisted of a dark circular seating chamber in front of which large, flat painted scenes on translucent linen were represented. Each picture was seen through a 2,800-square-foot calico window that was painted half opaque. The opaque portion was frontally lit and the translucent part was illuminated from behind, producing the startling illusion that the picture emitted a radiant light and was not on a flat surface, and that certain objects within the scene moved, such as an avalanche of snow. The color, brightness, and direction of the light was controlled through a system of cords, pulleys, shutters, and slides, and its pictorial effects were soon enhanced with real animals, stage props, and sound effects.25 The diorama was an immediate success and, as an astute impresario, Daguerre went on to build an elaborate amphitheater in London, with 200 seats capable of pivoting viewers from scene to scene.

Notes: Alfred Noack (also Alfredo ) (born May 25, 1833 in Dresden , died 1895 in Genoa ) was an Italian photographer of Saxon origin. Noack first studied wood engraving with Hugo Bürkner at the Academy of Fine Arts in Dresden. In addition, he might have been a student of Hermann Krone. In November 1856 Noack moved to Rome and stayed there for four years. He was a member of the German Artists Association there, then he moved to Genoa and opened a workshop there. He specialized in photographs of the city and Liguria, in the 1860s, were well received by tourists, as the "inventor" of the Italian Riviera . From 1865 to 1871 he was a member of the Masonic Lodge Trionfo Ligure. After his death, his negative archive was taken over by Carlo Paganini, until 1926, when his heirs bequeathed the approximately 4,000 negatives of the City of Genoa.

taken for Active Assignment Weekly group

This week's assignment: Making the Invisible Visible

I want you to make photos of things that can normally not been seen. This idea came up with the smell assignment. Smell is invisible. There are so many other things that are invisible: soundwaves, microwaves, heat (=IR) and nuclear (you might be careful on that...) radiation, X-ray, the soul, ghosts, thoughts. Make those things visible by ANY means.

Restriction

Do something new that you have not done before. Of course it will not be so new that none has done it before (I am always looking on Flickr when I think I came up with a totally new concept or idea and I can tell you: EVERYTHING has been there before...) but at least for you it should be undiscovered country.

Any manipulation on the post-processing side is absolutely ok for me (not a big wonder, hm?). Surprise us.

WIT: a lot of thinking, which led me to "feelings". Not having a couple in love at hand, my thoughts had to wander on to the next obvious step: pain. ;-)

I found some Panadol in my bathroom and put my homeopatic hayfever tablets on top as I wanted to have a photo of the tablets themselves. I tried a few shots in several angles, with wide and narrow DoF. I found the narrow DoF more interesting. I didn't want the colour of my window sill and the green Panadol writing distract, so I shot in b/w - something I don't do very often...
