The greatest tunes and dances of Ceylon Kaffir released their maiden musical album ~ “Kaffir Sthrela”. THIDORA ~ Theatre Institute for Disability Oriented Research and Advocacy, Sri Lanka proudly presented 'Kaffir Sthrela' the maiden musical album of 'Kaffir Manja' of Siraambiyadi, Puttlam district in Sri Lanka. The album ~ “Kaffir Sthrela” was launched today at John de Silva Memorial Theatre in Colombo, Sri Lanka.

The community Kaffir was brought to Sri Lanka from South Africa by Portuguese during the time Portuguese ruled the Island Nation.

As a result of the vibrant diversified customs and rituals of Sri Lankans this community still exists with their own culture in Sri Lanka even after more than 500 years though the no of heads are less than 200. They are the 6th and 7th generation live in Siraambiyadi in Puttlam district, North West of Sri Lanka. The 11 member troupe actively and collectively sings beautifully, and dances gorgeously. Their catchy tunes with the highest spirit and energy make the audience to clap, whistle, foot tap and of course dance endlessly.

Active Ageing

2012 is the year of active ageing. The focus on active ageing is intended to raise awareness of the contribution that older people make to society. The aim is to encourage policymakers and relevant stakeholders at all levels to take action with the aim of creating better opportunities for older people and strengthening solidarity between generations.

What is active ageing?

Active ageing means growing old in good health and as a full member of society, feeling more fulfilled in our jobs, more independent in our daily lives and more involved as citizens. No matter how old we are, we can still play our part in society and enjoy a better quality of life. The challenge is to make the most of the enormous potential that we harbour even at a more advanced age. The European Year 2012 seeks to promote active ageing in three areas:

Employment – as life expectancy increases across Europe, pension ages are rising, but many fear that they will not be able to stay in their current jobs or to find another job until they can retire on a decent pension. We must give older workers better chances in the labour market.

Participation in society – retiring from one's job does not mean becoming idle. The contribution of older people to society as carers for others, typically their own parents or spouses and their grandchildren is often overlooked and so is their role as volunteers. The European Year seeks to ensure greater recognition of what older people bring to society and create more supportive conditions for them.

Independent living – our health declines as we grow old, but a lot can be done to cope with this decline. And quite small changes in our environment can make a big difference to people suffering from various health impairments and disabilities. Active ageing also means empowering us as we age so that we can remain in charge of our own lives as long as possible.

Active Assignment Weekly: Stairs.

The assignment is to capture stairs.

Dare: try to capture feet as they travel on the stairs.

Don't: no folding stairs

Most residential buildings here (Lusaka, Zambia) are single-storey, so no stairs there. But there are lots of unfinished commercial buildings like this one that are started and then grind to a halt. I wondered why the second step was so large?

WIT: asking the guard to let me take the picture, persuading the foreman a few minutes later that I had permission from the guard; straight from camera, no crop or PP

The Banks Peninsula.

This stunning volcano formed peninsula was named by Captain Cook in 1770 believing that it was an island after he saw Lake Ellesmere which he thought was the sea. He named it after the botanist on his voyage – Joseph Banks. We know that the peninsula is made up of two volcanic cones with breached sides on the calderas - with one forming Lyttelton Harbour and the other Akaroa Harbour. The volcanoes were active 1.6 to 5 million years ago. The volcanic cones or calderas have steep indented sides producing dramatic coastal and cliff formations. The first settlement that we reach on Banks Peninsula is called Little River which is known for its grass seed industry. On top of the caldera we should have superb views of Akaroa harbour if it is clear.

Apart from Maori occupation Akaroa was first settled by two Frenchmen who created the village of Duvauchelle in 1840. A little further on is Akaroa. The harbour is known for its wildlife including the rare Hector Dolphins and many seabirds. Since the Polynesian invasion of NZ about 1,000 years ago three successive waves of Maori have occupied Akaroa Harbour – the Waitaha, the Kati Mamoe and finally from the 1600s to the arrival of white settlers the Ngai Tahu. In 1830 the Maori settlement on the south side of the harbour was the scene of a notorious incident with the British ship named Elizabeth. British Captain John Stewart helped the North Island chieftain Ngata Toa to capture the local chieftain Te Maiharanui which resulted in a battle and massacre. The British wanted to establish a whaling station at Akaroa but the Ngai Tahu would not agree to this. Partly as a result of this James Busby was sent to New Zealand to negotiate with the Maoris for British occupation which he did through the Treaty of Waitangi in 1840. In the meantime Akaroa was left alone until 1838 when French whaler Captain Langlois decided to use Akaroa for a whaling station. He “purchased” some Maori land through a dubious agreement with the Maoris. He returned to France, floated the Nanto-Bordelaise Company and returned to Akaroa with a group of French families with the intention of founding a French colony there. But by the time he arrived back in Akaroa the Treaty of Waitangi had been signed, including by the Akaroa chiefs and Britain had declared sovereignty over all of New Zealand’s three main islands. But the French stayed and settled anyway with villagers at Duvauchelle and Akaroa itself. New Zealand’s first Governor Hobson despatched a British ship the Britomart from the Bay of Islands to Akaroa to ensure British sovereignty was respected. The French laid out the streets of Akaroa with French names and they planted many walnut trees and bush roses. By the time the British arrived in Christchurch with the Canterbury Associated in 1850(based like SA on the ideas of Edward Gibbon Wakefield) Akaroa was already well established albeit with a French flavour. Look at the street names- Rue Lavaud, Rue Pompallier, Rue Jolie, Rue Balguerie, Rue Benoit, Rue Viard and Rue Grehan. The hill behind the town is L’Aube Hill (Sunrise Hill).

Active Assignment Weekly: Minimal House

This is light shining in front of my doggy door. I tried to concentrate on something other than wood and to be as minimal as possible.

I cleaned up the noise on the floor and did black and white. I also boosted contrast. I took the photo in the dark to get the most contrast as possible.

Active Assignment Weekly: Long exposure. I confess, I intended to do some long exposure at the Latin American street festival yesterday, but I plain forgot.

Here is a tram (streetcar) going past our building. Taken from our balcony on the 36th floor with the camera way over the railing.

What it took: Saturation maxed, contrast maxed, Flickr filter Lorno. Cropped a few mm to get rid of a shadow of a car in the top right corner.

It's very sunny and bright right now, well, it has been for the last few weeks. It's difficult to do long exposures during the day with a max of f/8. I think this came out ok, though, in the end.

Displayed at St Peter and St Paul Parish Church, Hockley, Essex.

Day 130 (v 3.0) - the opposite, actually. not going to the gym or doing anything very physical at all and i'm not sure if that's why i'm feeling so awful or vice versa. regardless, the wrist is aching from gaming (not a sympathetic story, i know) and the knees are shot so the stairs are becoming a struggle. lots of other ailments that should probably be diagnosed but no strength, can't be bothered, etc.
