Minscape
Shot for Active Assignment Weekly. The topic of this week is Minscape, a made up word, not to be confused with manscaping.
So what you SHOULD take a picture of, is minimal landscapes.
WIT:
Driving into some local maize fields after heavy rain this morning, and climbing on top of the car to get a viewpoint. Crop to be more panoramic and very slight straightening.
ACTIVE aims to increase the productivity of knowledge workers in a pro-active, contextualised, yet easy and unobtrusive way. The aim is to convert tacit and unshared knowledge – the "hidden intelligence" of enterprises – into transferable, interoperable and actionable knowledge to support seamless collaboration and to enable problem solving. A key aspect will be the support for informal procedural knowledge - the informal collaboration and problem-solving tasks that drive much knowledge work in the enterprise.
Heading home to Ladner from Victoria (on Vancouver Island (Canada)) today, there was enough fog that a lookout was posted at the front of the ferry. I spent the first half of the trip with a 180mm lens capturing the wonderful bleakness/richness of the fog. It is the long weekend, so there were a lot of small craft about, livening up our trip.

You're assignment this week, if you choose to accept it, is to take your flash off camera. Now if you don't have off camera flash abilities, please feel free to be creative and using other lighting sources.
DARE: Your dare will be to use a long exposure (Include multiple flashes if you can).
I used a light tent with the flash on the outside top of the tent. Basic adjustments in LR and added a white vignette
Active Assignment Weekly: 19-26 Mar 2018: Awesome Alphabet
Feature one letter or the whole alphabet in your creative image be sure it is awesome! Dare: something other than the English alphabet. Restriction: No signs and must be a color photograph.
WIT: Cropped to square, straightened, applied a B&W conversion in Silver Efex Pro, then re-read the rules and removed it, tried again with Colour Efex Pro 4.
Photos taken for work of law enforcement and paramedics conducting a drill at a school in Des Moines. The public safety officers practiced best practices for securing a school building and safely removing victims. I was only "shot at" once as an officer must have mistaken my Canon for, well, a cannon.
The Active Learning Center (ALC), formerly known as the ME-EM "Fishbowl." has been completely transformed into a technology-rich collaborative learning space, featuring 72 student computer stations, three instructor stations and 29 collaboration LCD monitors hung from the ceiling.
That coal-black island in the centre is Nea Kameni, Greece's only active volcano. It sits in the centre of the magnificent caldera, idly smoking and throwing occasional tantrums.
The 3-hour stroll along the caldera rim from the centre of Santorini's crescent to the far end is the most popular hike on the island. And no wonder.

As I drove into the parking garage at my office, there were two people casting great shadows in the early morning light blasting in here. I pulled over and got my camera out as fast as I could, but not fast enough. You can just barely make out the two people in the shadows to the right. SOOC.
Our Active Learning Classroom (ALC) is designed to support interactive and technology enhanced learning. It serves as an incubation space where faculty can implement and assess new teaching and learning ideas.
The classroom is capable of numerous configurations; with computer stations at each table and multiple wall-mounted screens. The purpose of the ALC is to offer active, engaged teaching and learning experiences in a collaborative environment.
Communities Secretary Eric Pickles and Baroness Newlove join community activists at the launch of the Building Active, Safer Communities report.
Forty 4th and 5th grade students from Elizabeth Public Schools were recognized by the New York Jets for their success in the American Heart Association/NFL Play 60 Program. The program encourages students to be active for a least 60 minutes a day for 60 days- and keep a log of their activities. 390 students across the district participated in the event. But it was an essay on, “How the Jets encouraged me to exercise and eat better” that determined our district’s “Play 60 Champions”. The students made a surprise visit to School 1/9, where they were greeted by the Jets “Flight Crew” cheerleaders, and a video of Todd Bowles congratulating them. Ms Teneka Bowles then presented the students with the big surprise- field level tickets to the Jets/Titans game the following Sunday! Keeping with the healthy tradition, students enjoyed a (broccoli) pizza party after the ceremony courtesy of the Jets. Over the course of the 60 days, Jets staff visited 6 district schools and were impressed with the way our district infuses academics with movement and exercise. The program was a great success- and the Jets are excited about coming back and doing it again next year!

Assignment: Dramatic lighting
What it took
Finally I had an excuse to make one of these mini DIY softboxes to slip on my speedlite. To get the reflection I set a high gloss guitar face down on my kitchen table, then placed the matchbox car on the guitar. I tried to keep the camera as low as possible to make the car appear life size. I positioned my new softbox about 2" above the car and feathered the light towards my cloth background (shirt) I had positioned behind the guitar to provide separation.
We went to West Virginia to see Sofi compete in the Miss Teen International Pageant. While we weren't happy with how she placed, it seemed to us that there wasn't necessarily much valuation in diversity based on the results we saw. Either way Sofi did great.

Active family member, Bryce Loy has been battling to recover from a near fatal cliff jump and his family has come together to help raise funds to relieve financial burdens that come along with shattering two feet and vertebrae in his back. It was decided to do what Active does best and that's to celebrate life with an awesome party. With the generous donation from Anepalco's Cafe and the Bruery, they got the party going while a lovely Skate-Jam and live music from Pathways, Warm Climate, and Clean Victoria held it down smooth. Big thanks to all who came through for Bryce and helping us raise well over our goal to help kick start him back to health and happiness once again!
