Notes: The word silhouette is derived from the name of Étienne de Silhouette, a French finance minister who, in 1759, was forced by France's credit crisis during the Seven Years' War to impose severe economic demands upon the French people, particularly the wealthy. Because of de Silhouette's austere economies, his name became synonymous with anything done or made cheaply and so with these outline portraits. Prior to the advent of photography, silhouette profiles cut from black card were the cheapest way of recording a person's appearance. The term silhouette, although existing from the 18th century, was not applied to the art of portrait-making until the 19th century. In the 18th and early 19th century, “profiles” or “shades” as they were called were made by one of three methods: (1) painted on ivory, plaster, paper, card, or in reverse on glass, (2) “hollow-cut” where the negative image was traced and then cut away from light colored paper which was then laid atop a dark background; and (3) “cut and paste” where the figure was cut out of dark paper (usually free-hand) and then pasted onto a light background. -- The Canon 10-22 lens is surprisingly fun for geology. We love context and for that wide is better. For closeups you just put it a foot or so from the outcrop and click away. This is one of those "notes to self" as I often figure out cool things and then struggle to remember the details when I go back years later --

I sort of stumbled across this on my day off. The sedimentary deposit was pretty cool all by itself but its relationship to active tectonics in California raises it to another level.

------------------------------------------------

An outcrop of "Año Nuevo fan" deposit in a down-dropped block between the Frijoles and Coastways splays of the San Gregorio-Hosgri fault system. This is an active strike-slip fault system outboard of the San Andreas on the Santa Cruz County Coast. The fan deposit is one of our best records of it's activity and movement.

Subtle extension along this section of the fault zone has resulted in subsidence and accommodation of several 10-15 foot thick young alluvial deposits along the axis of the fault system on the Año Nuevo terrace. These deposits are found cut-off and dragged north relative to their respective source streams. This fact can be used to constrain the direction and rate of local fault movement -- a right lateral offset of 5 to 11 mm / year during the Holocene along the San Gregorio-Hosgri fault system -- perhaps 10 to 20 percent of the total right-lateral strain in central California.

Charcoal fragments date the base of this particular deposit to the early Holocene (12,000 years before present). Lower units in the graben fill include clean beach sands and organic rich estuarine muds (seen at the base of the outcrop here) with erosive meandering conglomerate filled channels. These indicate deposition at or near sea-level. The upper units (making up the bulk of the outcrop seen here) consist of tabular conglomerates , thin discontinuous shales, and mudflow deposits. It is interpreted to be a terrestrial braid plain filling the down-dropped block on the terrace between subsidence events.

Clasts in the conglomerates consist largely of local Miocene shale (probably from the underlying Purisima Formation or perhaps the Santa Cruz Mudstone found to the east of the San Gregorio Fault). The thick proximal mudflow unit half way up the outcrop behaved plastically during and following emplacement -- injecting down into underlying gravels and erupting through overlying gravels to the "paleo-surface". Cobbles in the upper unit show strong imbrication and indicate westward paleocurrents. Channels in the lower unit run generally westward. Although the deposit is now cross-cut by Año Nuevo Creek, the age and nature of the deposit are consistent with derivation from Finney Creek, 2000 feet to the southwest.

The San Gregorio Fault system shows no evidence of aseismic creep and is expected to generate a large earthquakes in the future. 5-9 separate past surface-rupture events have been inferred from relationships on the Año Nuevo marine terrace.

This is a photograph from the 41st Rennicks Cup and 38th Father Delany Cup 5 Mile Road Race and 5KM Fun Run organised by Bohermeen AC and held at Bohermeen AC, Ardbracan, Navan, Co. Meath, Ireland on Sunday 8th of September 2013 at 12:00. This is great local club support as the race forms part of the Meath Road Race League.

Electronic timing and event management was provided by Precision Timing [www.precisiontiming.net].

The wonderful atmosphere, the great racing and participation, the work by the club, Meath Athletics, and the local community are a great tribute to the resilience and long tradition of this race. Congratulations to everyone involved. Everything that is good about grassroots athletics and running in Ireland is always on show in Bohermeen.

Bohermeen AC can rightly claim to be one of the most active accredited race organisers in Ireland. In the Spring they host their Spring Half Marathon (see www.flickr.com/photos/peterm7/sets/72157632906920970/), in the summer they host their Patrick Bell 5KM Road Race (see here www.flickr.com/photos/peterm7/sets/72157634010225199/), with proceedings finishing in the early Autumn with the Rennicks Cup. Astonishingly over their 3 race series this year Bohermeen AC have had a total of almost 1,500 participants. These numbers speak for themselves with the proceeds of these races going directly back into the athletics club and grass-roots athletics in the county.

This is photograph is part of a largest set of photographs from the start and the end of the race which are organised into the following Flickr set [http://www.flickr.com/photos/peterm7/sets/72157635427779978/].

Overall Race Summary

Participants: Approximately 150 people took part in the 5 mile event. The 5KM had many families involved.

Weather: The weather was slightly mixed. There was a cool breeze seemingly on the face of runners for many parts of the left handed course. There was a very light sure during the early part of the race whilst later in the race there were some heavier showers.

Course: The race starts just west of the Bohermeen Athletics Track and Club House (about 500 meters from the finish line) and proceeds down the straight road (Newline) passing the club house. The race takes runners over the M3 motorway and the a very sharp left turn uphill at Arbraccan brings the runners heading northwards to another left turn and back up a rise over the M3 motorway again. For the remainder of the race the route is flat with no hills or drags. The section between miles 3 and 4 are sheltered by high hedgerows and passes Durhamstown Castle one of the oldest lived in houses in Ireland. The final mile brings runners into Bohermeen village with the school and church to their left. The race then takes its final left turn back onto the straight newline road where runners pass the start of the race and the final 400 meters which brings runners onto the gravel track and across the finish line.

Location Map: Start/finish area and registration etc on Google StreetView [goo.gl/maps/KW9Lt]

Refreshments: The folks at Bohermeen AC and the local community a wonderful spread of sandwiches, cakes, buns, teas and coffees in the sports hall afterwards.

How can I get a full resolution copy of these photographs?

All of the photographs here on this Flickr set have a visible watermark embedded in them. All of the photographs posted here on this Flickr set are available offline, free, at no cost, at full image resolution WITHOUT watermark. We take these photographs as a hobby and as a contribution to the running community in Ireland. Our only "cost" is our request that if you are using these images: (1) on social media sites such as Facebook, Tumblr, Pinterest, Twitter,LinkedIn, Google+, etc or (2) other websites, web multimedia, commercial/promotional material that you provide a link back to our Flickr page to attribute us. This also extends the use of these images for Facebook profile pictures. In these cases please make a separate wall or blog post with a link to our Flickr page. If you do not know how this should be done for Facebook or other social media please email us and we will be happy to help suggest how to link to us.

Please email petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com with the links to the photographs you would like to obtain a full resolution copy of. We also ask race organisers, media, etc to ask for permission before use of our images for flyers, posters, etc. We reserve the right to refuse a request.

In summary please remember - all we ask is for you to link back to our Flickr set or Flickr pages. Taking the photographs and preparing them for online posting does take a significant effort. We are not posting photographs to Flickr for commercial reasons. If you really like what we do please spread the link around your social media, send us an email, leave a comment beside the photographs, send us a Flickr email, etc.

If you would like to contribute something for your photograph(s)?

Many people offer payment for our photographs. As stated above we do not charge for these photographs. We take these photographs as our contribution to the running community in Ireland. If you feel that the photograph(s) you request are good enough that you would consider paying for their purchase from other photographic providers we would suggest that you can provide a donation to any of the great charities in Ireland who do work for Cancer Care or Cancer Research in Ireland.

I ran in the race - but my photograph doesn't appear here in your Flickr set! What gives?

As mentioned above we take these photographs as a hobby and as a voluntary contribution to the running community in Ireland. Very often we have actually ran in the same race and then switched to photographer mode after we finished the race. Consequently, we feel that we have no obligations to capture a photograph of every participant in the race. However, we do try our very best to capture as many participants as possible. But this is sometimes not possible for a variety of reasons:

►You were hidden behind another participant as you passed our camera

►Weather or lighting conditions meant that we had some photographs with blurry content which we did not upload to our Flickr set

►There were too many people - some races attract thousands of participants and as amateur photographs we cannot hope to capture photographs of everyone

►We simply missed you - sorry about that - we did our best!

You can email us petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com to enquire if we have a photograph of you which didn't make the final Flickr selection for the race. But we cannot promise that there will be photograph there. As alternatives we advise you to contact the race organisers to enquire if there were (1) other photographs taking photographs at the race event or if (2) there were professional commercial sports photographers taking photographs which might have some photographs of you available for purchase. You might find some links for further information above.

Don't like your photograph here?

That's OK! We understand!

If, for any reason, you are not happy or comfortable with your picture appearing here in this photoset on Flickr then please email us at petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com and we will remove it as soon as possible. We give careful consideration to each photograph before uploading.

I want to tell people about these great photographs!

Great! Thank you! The best link to spread the word around is probably www.flickr.com/peterm7/sets

Active Assignment Weekly

For this week's assignment you need to"Frame" your subject with something natural or staged...But..Not with Photoshop or one of those other funky programs.

Restriction: No imported frame.

Dare:Take the assignment literally.

Well I headed out to work on this assignment but my dogs were not cooperating. So I figured I'd make the pups model for me another day and try to combine the weekly and monthly assignments together.

I wanted it to look as though it was a picture hanging up and the glass being broken and liquefying.

WIT: I rotated it 90 degrees in Picasa and adjusted the lighting.

That coal-black island in the centre is Nea Kameni, Greece's only active volcano. It sits in the centre of the magnificent caldera, idly smoking and throwing occasional tantrums.

The 3-hour stroll along the caldera rim from the centre of Santorini's crescent to the far end is the most popular hike on the island. And no wonder.

WIT

I shot this evening scene with my IPhone, using the Hipstamatic App. Histamatic emulates a large number of vintage lenses and all sorts of roll films. This shot, taken in Vienna, Austria, is straight out of the Phone. I also uploaded it straight from the Phone using the Flickr App.

My first complete Active Desktop! It's been years since Microsoft published the feature (1997) but I think it's still got it's uses. The small "desktop" tag in the upper left is there to minimize all open applications. I also had to match the color of the real desktop to the color underneath the icon in the lower right because I don't have a fancy widget thingy running which will turn those transparent. This wallpaper was taken from Yokohama Fuka.
