Have you ever been stalked by a leopard?

This look? The decisive moment for Samson, the Amur Leopard right before he tried to attack me!

Not something on my bucket list... Not something I thought I'd ever face... But...

I was taking pictures of Samson, the four year old Amur Leopard at Brookfield Zoo. He was quite active this day - roaming his habitat - going for birds if they strayed too close. I hoped to get some good action shots. He's grown quite large now - 5 feet? 100 lbs? A sizeable cat - much larger than his mom, Lisa.

It was cold and in the middle of the week - there were very few people around - in fact, I was alone with him. He was high up on the rocks - a typical place, and I moved over by the netting on the right side, and leaned in to minimize the appearance of the netting in the image capture.

He suddenly, intently focused on me, then moved along the rocks, toward the angled log that lets them climb up and down on that side of the habitat. Running first, then slowing, as he moved down the log - leading to the look you see.

I didn't realize it at the time, but he was stalking me. Judging that maybe, just maybe I was close enough to get at. Sizing me up.

Me? I was oblivious as to his intent - I was happy to get some big cat action!

Then he raced down the log, bounded to the ground, right toward me! I was just trying to keep him in the frame, but couldn't see his actions clearly, he was moving so fast!

Before I knew it, he leapt and hit the netting, bowing it way out toward me - he was going for my head! I backed away, the netting held, and he had a disappointed look on his face.

If you've seen Encanto, in the "Don't Eat Those" scene, the Jaguar has the same expression - I should post it.

Playing? Hunting? Both? I oddly did not feel frightened by this - but it could have been dangerous.

He did variations of this charge a few more times, but none as powerfully as that first leap. A couple of times he snuck up on me and was next to me before I knew it - again on the netting. After a while, he went up on the rocks for a nap, and I left...

A crazy encounter for sure. Hopefully I provided him some novel entertainment - a respite from his usual life. I won't soon forget it!

St Wilfrid's dates from the 13th century, built on a site close to that of a Roman fort, Bremetennacum. A chapel and porch were added in the 14th century. A tower was added to the west in the late 15th century. In the 16th century, the roofs were removed in order to increase the height of the chancel walls and new windows were added to the aisle wall. Major repairs to the building took place in 1685–6 and 1711. A west gallery was added in 1736. The church underwent restoration in 1881 that included the rebuilding of the north wall of the chancel.

In November 1966, it was designated a Grade I listed building. The Grade I listing is for buildings "of exceptional interest, sometimes considered to be internationally important". St Wilfrid's is an active Anglican parish church in the Diocese of Blackburn, the Archdeaconry of Lancaster and the Deanery of Preston. Wikipedia

The Bald Eagles were very active again this morning. There must have been 50 eagles sitting in the trees around the lake and river.

There were also LOTS of Seagulls. When they all suddenly turn and fly the same way. you know an eagle is coming. In this way, they can be helpful finding incoming eagles. But they sure can clutter up a shot!! I have so many eagle shots ruined by photobombing Seagulls!

This shot is of a small stream. The leaves on the left side are several inches under water, the leaves on the right are floating on top of the water, the water itself is reflecting the bare trees that once nurtured these leaves.

We had a lovely conversation with the leaseholders of this property. Their life lease will run until the passing of the youngest family member alive at the time of the original lease in the 1930s.

While chatting with them, we were paddling upwind to stay near their dock. Of course the wind died down before it could help our return paddle.

The Common brown lemur (Eulemur fulvus) is a species of lemur in the family Lemuridae. It is found in Madagascar and Mayotte. The common brown lemur lives in western Madagascar north of the Betsiboka River and eastern Madagascar between the Mangoro River and Tsaratanana, as well as in inland Madagascar connecting the eastern and western ranges.

The common brown lemur's diet consists primarily of fruits, young leaves, and flowers. In some locations it eats invertebrates, such as cicadas, spiders and millipedes. It also eats bark, sap, soil and red clay. It can tolerate greater levels of toxic compounds from plants than other lemurs can.

Consistent with its large range, the common brown lemur occupies a variety of forest types, including lowland rainforests, montane rainforests, moist evergreen forests and dry deciduous forests.

They normally live in groups of 5 to 12, but group size can be larger, especially on Mayotte. Groups occupy home ranges of 1 to 9 hectares in the west, but more than 20 hectares in the east. Groups include members of both sexes, including juveniles, and there are no discernible dominance hierarchies.

They are primarily active during the day but can exhibit cathemeral activity and continue into the night, especially during full moons and during the dry season. – Wikipedia

The Four-spotted chaser is a medium-sized, fairly broad-bodied dragonfly. It is on the wing from May to September, sometimes even into October. It is commonly found on heathland and moorland, as well as around ponds, lakes and in woods. Four-spotted Chasers are active dragonflies, spending a lot of time hawking over water for insect-prey or to mark out their territories. They mate on the wing; the female then hovers over the water, dipping the tip of her abdomen into drop her eggs on to vegetation below the surface.

Not a fan of all the clutter around the bird, but this is still the best shot I have a Black-tailed Gnatcatcher. They're extremely active little birds that normally forage behind branches.

NEW JERSEY 2017 BALD EAGLE PROJECT REPORT

ANOTHER PRODUCTIVE YEAR FOR NJ’S EAGLES

by Larissa Smith, CWF Wildlife Biologist

The Conserve Wildlife Foundation of NJ in partnership with the NJ Endangered and Nongame Species Program has released the 2017 NJ Bald Eagle Project Report. In 2017, 178 eagle nests were monitored during the nesting season. Of these nests 153 were active (with eggs) and 25 were territorial or housekeeping pairs. One hundred and ninety young were fledged.

In 2017 the number of active nests was three more than in 2016, but the number young fledged decreased by 27 from a record high of 216 fledged in 2016. The productivity rate this season of 1.25 young/active nest is still above the required range of 0.0 to 1.1 for population maintenance. Productivity could be lower this season for many reasons including weather, predation and disturbance to the nesting area. In 2017 nest monitors reported several instances of “intruder” eagles at nests which did disrupt the nesting attempts of several pairs. One of these “eagle dramas” unfolded at the Duke Farms eagle cam watched by millions of people. An intruder female attempted to replace the current female. This harassment interrupted the pairs bonding and copulation and no eggs were laid.

This year’s report includes a section on Resightings of banded eagles. Resightings of NJ (green) banded eagles have increased over the years, as well as eagles seen in NJ that were banded in other states. These resightings are important, as they help us to understand eagle movements during the years between fledging and settling into a territory, as well as adult birds at a nest site.

South Sister, at 10,363 ft (3,158.5 m), the third tallest mountain the state of Oregon, and the tallest of the Three Sisters group, is a glaciated, potentially active stratovolcano that rises up above the city of Bend in the heart of the central Cascade Range. I took this shot from a meadow along the southwest side of the peak, just as the summit had emerged from a blanket of clouds.

Thanks to all my Flickr friends who follow my activity here. At the same time, I regret that poor health makes me less active. However, I'm staying until the end!

Despite being a common species within its range (Bolivia, Brazil and Peru) there is no established common name for this species though it is sometimes called the Black-eyed Monkey Frog.

Like many they are more active at night and in this species the female will lay her eggs in a foam nest on the underside of a leaf, strategically selected for its position over a body of water for the tadpoles to fall into once they emerge from the eggs.

Perched on a cliff on the central California coast, 50 miles south of San Francisco, the 115-foot Pigeon Point Lighthouse, one of the tallest lighthouses in America, has been guiding mariners since 1872. Its five-wick lard oil lamp, and first-order Fresnel lens, comprised of 1,008 prisms, was first lit at sunset, November 15, 1872. The lens stands 16 feet tall, 6 feet in diameter, and weighs 8,000 pounds. It sits in a lantern room that had been constructed at the Lighthouse Service's general depot in New York before being shipped around the Horn. Although the original Fresnel lens is no longer in use, the lighthouse is still an active U.S. Coast Guard aid to navigation using a 24 inch Aero Beacon.

A new Viper species! 🚨✨

Living in the picturesque karsts of the Chumphon province of Thailand, the newly described Kra Isthmus Pit Viper (Trimeresurus kraensis) is a STUNNING snake! 🐍🌳

Limestone massifs harbour endemic species across the world and this venomous snake is another with this association! ⛰️

It is mainly active at night where it hunts other reptiles and small mammals in the humid rock-surrounded forest! 🐭

I was lucky enough to see this incredible species last year before it was given a name! Thailand has so many extraordinary snake species! 😍🐍

I just thought this was a pretty picture worth taking, but I am always digging deeper for geologic explanations.

The rocks in the foreground are pre-Cambrian granite dated at 1.6 billion years and are part of a batholith that covers the region immediately east of the Sawatch Range and upper Arkansas Valley in central Colorado. The highly eroded Buffalo Peaks, in the background, was volcanically active 28 million years ago.

My primary source for Colorado geology is the book "Messages In Stone: Colorado's Colorful Geology." (Colorado Geological Survey, Second edition revised by Vincent Matthews, Ph.D.)

Early in the morning, unfortunately we didn't find any of this nice species in rest mode.

Later in the morning we did find some which were already very active.

Then, the extra mm's are very handy to capture them when they are active and shyer.
