Nearby are petroglyphs created by indigenous Australians. I suspect this particular pattern is natural geology, with a few added lines by humans.

One of my expert contacts suggested "this looks like a sandstone dyke, formed where unconsolidated sand was injected into a fracture cutting across the bedding. This is usually caused by an earthquake which creates the fracture and causes liquefaction of the sediment, allowing it to flow into the fracture."

Who says there's no straight lines in nature? Previously I'd seen long white lines in the rainforest in northern New South Wales, perfectly straight. But these were roots from the strangler fig.

No doubt this photographed area was significant to the indigenous people. They would have some mystical explanation for how this rocky pattern was formed.

The rock is Hawkesbury sandstone. These rock platforms give a clue to the massive sedimentary deposits laid down here in the Triassic. This was formerly a river delta. Of enormous size, similar to the Nile and Ganges deltas of today.

The moss (top right) is Campylopus bicolor.

These magnificent sandstone sculptures created by time and nature are found on a Navajo American-indian reservation at Antelope Canyon near the town of Page in northern Arizona. The narrow gorge 'slot canyon' is a photographer’s paradise because the waters that roar through it after a desert rainstorm have washed away portions of the canyon walls. What’s left behind are gentle swirls and abstract patterns on the remaining sandstone, enhanced by brilliant colors that multiply when the sun peeks over the rim.

This shows only the inner side of the glass, to isolate and emphasize the pattern. It may not seem unusual until you don't think about what it is long enough to look at it closely. Maybe it doesn't look abstract after it's named.

You might recognize this if you ever drink buttermilk. Each arc is from the ring left on the curved surface from milk getting lower and lower after each time I drank a little more. Maybe other kinds of milk – possibly also thin milkshakes – leave similar patterns.

I found her on the beach. The receding surf had left behind this abstract pattern that caught my eye. You must take the image as a whole, the shadows and highlights appear to form a shape of a naked woman with those 2 mounds as her breasts, and the mini gorges running down from top right corner down across as her head/face profile.

I shot it before the next surf could wipe it away.

I'm not sure this is photography. It did start with a photo of lemons and then.....

it went somewhere else. It's definitely a mosaic. And I definitely had fun creating it.And since I've made quilts for years I guess I've created a quilt idea.

A yellow and white digital art geometric pattern I created in Photoshop. I love the yellow white color contrast, and particularly love this pattern on a Throw Pillow and some of our other products.

This pattern could also be multiplied to make a large bright wall mural.

Today I wanted to show you how some of the patterns that I’ve previously shown you for ‘My pattern design of the week’ would look like as wallpapers. The patters have been slightly changed and I’ve also added a few other design elements to them where I thought the design needed a little extra work.

I've been intrigued lately with some beautiful images I've seen of smoke, and I've decided to try it. This is from a first attempt this morning using an incense stick, window light and a black background. The window light isn't all that bright and I ended up shooting this at 1/15th of a second and a ISO 0f 640. As a result it's not as sharp as I'd like, and there's a lot of noise. Still, I like the pattern.

I don't have an off camera flash, but I have ordered some fluorescent studio lights, and I'm going to see if I can do better when they arrive.

Others of my smoke images can be seen in my Smoke set. www.flickr.com/photos/9422878@N08/sets/72157625415055236/

Holes in plastic - abstract pattern randomly created by viewing a laundry basket at a different angle. Tried creating a 3-D view without the need for glasses :-). If you look closely, in the larger version, you will see a tiny interloper into this setup, namely a tiny sand-fly (I think) :-). It is sitting on the edge of a hole in the top left corner.
