This is my 6th entry to the CCCXI - Category: Arthurian Scene

Truth be told, I'm jealous of Jayme's dogs and his fantastic photo's he takes of them. So I set out to take my own dog's portrait photo. First, I went out to the garage and dug out the box buried deep in the dark at the back. Then I opened the box, took out my dog, blew the dust off of him and put him down. Next I set up the shot, told the dog to sit and went to get the camera. Everything was all good until I went to snap the shot. As soon as I aimed the camera at him, he turned around, said Look, I'm Sally Fields as the Flying Nun and flew off over the fence and out of sight. Typical dog.

I won the base doll in Sarah/Kaleidoscope Kustoms's raffle earlier this year for her daughter's broken arm. Karma is my anniversary girl #3 and will be gifted to someone this Christmas. I already have a recipient in mind, so there will be no drawing this year as there has been in the past. She is awaiting her outfit from some super generous friends, and then will be on her way!

A vida me fez assim

Doce ou atroz, Manso ou feroz

Eu caçador de mim

Preso a canções, entregue a paixões

Minneapolis Minnesota downtown skyline view from a little hole in the jump fence offda E. Franklin Avenue bridge that crosses over Interstate 35W

I’m getting a few questions how this was done: I had my tripod setup for about 2 hours on the bridge. I took some pictures at dusk when it was still light out and then again later when it got dark and all the city lights turned on. This image is a composite of 2 pictures manipulated in Photoshop. The base picture was one of those shots taken at dusk using a 30 second long exposure to capture the car light streaks on the highway. To get that long shutter speed in dusky light, I used a Lee ‘Big Stopper’ 10 stop ND filter with ISO at 100 and an small Aperture of f/20 (shutter at 30 seconds). I took another 'night shot' without any filters later in the evening from that same spot to capture the buildings when the city lights were on. In Photoshop, I used the 30 second exposure 'dusk shot' as the base layer and then put the 'night shot' on top in a different Layer. I masked off everything except the buildings on the night shot Layer and changed the Layer Blend Mode to ‘Color Dodge’ – that mode will keep pixels if they are lighter than the layer below and will hide pixels if they are darker – the effect is like turning on all the lights of the city :)

A muchas gracias out to Cousin Greg for watching my back in that rather spicy neighborhood and my apologies to that other photographer for hogging the fence hole for so long :O

The gate was built between 1380 and 1425 as part of the second city wall. The whole wall was completed around 1450. The gate was attacked in 1427 during the siege of the city. This attack was repelled.

The gate was opened and closed every day by the appointed raddraaiers, "wheel-turners". A minimum of twelve wheel-turners were collected morning and evening by several guards. It was an extremely dangerous task; if they did not begin walking simultaneously, then one could fall, dragging the rest along with often fatal results. Before the gate could come down, it had to be raised, to pull out the iron pins that held it in place. Only then could it come down. While the gate was going down, walking in the wheel grew ever easier and faster, and many people stumbled and broke their limbs. The koppelpoort was also never breached.

The Koppelpoort was given its current appearance during the restoration by Pierre Cuypers in 1885 and 1886. Among other things, Cuypers removed a step between the two gates and replaced it with a slope.

From 1969 to 1993 a puppet theater was situated in the gate.

The latest restoration was completed in 1996. It was carried out very cautiously, and with respect for the old building materials. For this the town of Amersfoort received the Europa Nostra Award.

The Waterkeringpad is a walking route between Amsterdam Central Station and Huizen and consists of eight sections. Check all sections here and information. The route follows the dike along the former Zuiderzee now the IJ Lake and the Gooimeer. A unique experience, walking on the dike! Before 1500 the Diemerzeedijk between Maxis and Muiden was made from clay and construction waste. From mid-fifteenth century, the old sea wall was a retaining wall of wooden poles. Between 1732 and 1744 it was replaced by a stone slope which could better absorb the powerful waves. The Waterkeringpad is a 36 kilometer long trail. We are walking section no.4 from Maxis to Muiden. At the harbor mouth Muiden has beautiful views of the IJ Lake. You can see in the distance the island Pampus. Across the harbor is the Muiderslot. Right behind the dike, the West Battery Muiden. Which was built in 1799 and is part of the Defence Line of Amsterdam. After 1870 the fort lost its military function and not improved for the New Dutch Waterline between 1880 and 1885. Because large parts of the Netherlands are below sealevel, the dutch have been fighting the water for as long as we can remember. However, water isn’t the only enemy of our country. In times of war water became a welcome ally and the nation’s best line of defence. The dutch caused intentional inundation using Hollands biggest secret weapon: the Dutch Waterline. After World War II the Waterline no longer played a prominent role and was quitly forgotten. The Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie is on the tentative list of UNESCO’s World Heritage. The New Dutch Waterline forts are, for the most part, closed during the winter months because of the bats that nest there. However, from April through September many special guided tours of the forts are possible. The dike offers beautiful views over the IJ Lake. Also the Dutch painter Rembrandt van Rijn did made many drawings along the Diemerzeedijk. It's a walking path with lots of history.

The Waterkeringpad is a walking route between Amsterdam Central Station and Huizen and consists of eight sections. It's a 36 kilometer trail and the dike offers beautiful views over the IJ Lake. On the route you will experience the importance of safe dikes and enjoy the nature around you with special historical and impressive objects that have to do with the dam. The West Battery is located on the west bank of Muiden. In 1427 the Fortress Muiden was a strategic military location. Especially the construction of the sea lock was an important tool in the defense of the Netherlands. Pampus is an artificial island and late 19th Century sea fort located in the IJmeer near Amsterdam. The fort is on a man-made island situated on what was the Pampus shallows or sandbank in the former Zuiderzee.

The Niederwalddenkmal is a monument located in the Niederwald Landscape park, near Rüdesheim am Rhein in Hesse, Germany. (Additional photos see in my comment.)

The monument was constructed to commemorate the foundation of the German Empire after the end of Franco-Prussian War. The first stone was laid on September 16, 1871, by Wilhelm I. The sculptor was Johannes Schilling, and the architect was Karl Weisbach. The total cost of the work is estimated at one million gold marks. It was inaugurated on September 28, 1883. The 38 metres (125 ft) tall monument represents the union of all Germans.

The monument's main inscription is engraved in the pedestal where the Germania statue is located: "ZUM ANDENKEN AN DIE EINMUETHIGE SIEGREICHE ERHEBUNG DES DEUTSCHEN VOLKES UND AN DIE WIEDERAUFRICHTUNG DES DEUTSCHEN REICHES 1870-1871." ("In memory of the unanimous victorious uprising of the German People and of the reinstitution of the German Empire 1870-1871"). The original idea by sculptor Johannes Schilling of the victory of the united German People was later adulterated into a more hostile interpretation against the "archenemy" France.

The Niederwald is a broad hill on the right bank of the Rhine, between that river and the Wisper, opposite Bingen am Rhein. The hill forms the southwestern apex of the Taunus range. Its summit is clothed with dense forests of oak and beech. Its southern and western sides, which descend sharply to Rüdesheim am Rhein and Assmannshausen on the Rhine, are covered with vineyards, and produce some of the finest wines of the district. The monument is located at the edge of the forest, on the crest of the hill above Rüdesheim.

Rüdesheim is a winemaking town in the Rhine Gorge and thereby part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. It lies in the Rheingau-Taunus-Kreis district in the Regierungsbezirk of Darmstadt in Hesse, Germany. It is officially known as Rüdesheim am Rhein, which distinguishes it from Rüdesheim an der Nahe. Bingen am Rhein is a town in the Mainz-Bingen district in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany.

Bingen is situated just southeast of the Rhine knee at the Bingen Forest (Binger Wald – actually a low mountain range), which rises west of the town. Rising to the north on the other side of the Rhine is the Rheingau range, the Taunus’s southwesternmost outcrop. In Bingen the river Nahe empties into the Rhine Gorge. Bingen forms the southern limit of the UNESCO Rhine Gorge World Heritage Site. The Rochusberg (mountain) is nearly completely surrounded by the town site.

The settlement’s original name was Bingium, a Celtic word that may have meant “hole in the rock”, a description of the shoal behind the Mäuseturm, known as the Binger Loch. Bingen was the starting point for the Via Ausonia, a Roman military road that linked the town with Trier. Bingen is well known for, among other things, the story about the Mouse Tower, in which allegedly the Bishop of Mainz Hatto was eaten by mice. The town was in 2008, after Kaiserslautern and Trier, organizer of the third Rhineland-Palatinate State Garden Show. (Wikipedia)

For anyone interested in the subject of water, a visit to Holland will be attractive. Holland is a country of water. As the French put it: ‘God created the world, but the Dutch made Holland’. A quarter of Holland is below sea level. Tourists arriving at Schiphol Airport are more than four meters below sea level. The many canals, lakes, dykes, bridges and polders give the Netherlands its special character. The country is an extensive network of waterways, all sorts of accommodation on and near the water, many maritieme museums, picturesque old towns and many attractions and events on the water like here in Marken. The IJssellake is an enormous freshwater lake and perfect for swimming, water sports and fishing. A former island Marken is now a peninsula in the IJssellake. The Rozewerf is a hamlet located just south of Grotewerf. Rozewerf was originally a mound , which is called a yard . This mound is not named after the color, but more than likely the person or family Rose, who has been the owner or claimant of the yard. Rozewerf still got the original look of this ancient settlement which are still the characteristic and monumental buildings. Houses are very close to each other, there is narrow passage through the hamlet. Rozewerf really is just on the dike that protects the water, once the Zuiderzee now the Markermeer. The area around Rozewerf was also regularly flooded after it came to be by the sea. Eventually a low dike was constructed leaving only skipped water at larger storms. Since the construction of the Dam there has been no more trouble. However, it has been affected by the drifting ice in the winter. Therefore there are also icebreakers just outside the dike in the Markermeer .

The UNESCO nominated island connected to the mainland since 1957, offers a clearly visible rich history. Rozewerf on the former island Marken, Netherlands, is not even a tiny village, but only a bunch of little wooden houses next to each other. It is located a few hundred meter next to the village Marken, which is a major touristic attraction. Therefore Rozewerf is usually not so crowded with tourists as the village Marken. The beautiful Dutch landscape with the beach along the dike to the lighthouse, the indescribable changeable skies over the IJsselmeer and the rest on the authentic island enrapture you. Look at the thousands of geese flying in the background. At this time of year they are easy to find in Waterland.

This dark form immature hawk was flying over my yard this summer and I was very surprised when it landed in my neighbor's Chinaberry tree. It's not very often that I get to see one of these birds and even more rare to see one perched out in the open. They generally perch deep in forested canopy.

Like layers of a cake, some of the most beautiful elements of summer lined up for a wonderful nightscape image on this July night high in the San Juan Mountains of Colorado. Wildflowers, a rocky waterfall, and Milky Way skies combined to make sleep seem like a distant priority.

Thanks to an aurora alert text from Greg-O/Gregory Pepion described by Soft Serve News as "in 20 minutes, the Geomagnetic Activity level (Kp number) will be 7 -- at STORM LEVEL! (It is On!!)" I headed out to Vista House - where there were about a dozen other photographers lined up across the parking area - to see and photograph what for me was my first glimpse of an aurora. Visually no color was visible (see image in first comment below) but this quick test exposure easily showed the red and green aurora brightly. I've adjusted the white balance of the clouds and the fog laying in the Gorge to be neutral gray allowing the red and green of the aurora to easily be distinguished from them. Just to the right of the Vista House you can see some vertical banding in both the green and red layers of aurora. About 20 minutes later the fog laying in the Gorge moved in obscuring the sky off and on until finally it was no longer visible. - Thanks Greg! NB17607

Dunluce Castle is a now-ruined medieval castle in Northern Ireland. It is located on the edge of a basalt outcropping in County Antrim (between Portballintrae and Portrush), and is accessible via a bridge connecting it to the mainland. The castle is surrounded by extremely steep drops on either side, which may have been an important factor to the early Christians and Vikings who were drawn to this place where an early Irish fort once stood

Ecoruta, parte II

The Marnixstraat is a street in Amsterdam, located along the western border of the Jordaan district in the center. The Marnixkade, parallel to the Marnixstraat, on the eastern bank of the Singel canal opposite the Nassaukade. The Eerste Marnixdwarsstraat above is located between Marnixstraat and Marnixkade. The street was named in 1872 to Filips van Marnix 1540 to 1598. The previous street, name was the Schans. The Canta are little red handicapped cars that are so normal in our streets, we don't even see them anymore. Just like we don't notice the Graffiti anymore. Graffiti is from the Italian word graffiato scratched. Graffiti is applied in art history to works of art produced by scratching a design into a surface. The term, graffiti, referred to the inscriptions, figure drawings, and such, found on the walls of ancient sepulchers or ruins, as in the Catacombs of Rome or at Pompeii. Use of the word has evolved to include any graphics applied to surfaces in a manner that constitutes vandalism. The Romans Classic also wrote on their walls and monuments. These were mostly political statements and announcements of gladiatorial games. It was not only the Greeks and Romans who produced graffiti: the Mayan site of Tikal in Guatemala also contains ancient examples. Viking graffiti survive in Rome. I think the graffiti above is probably not Vikings, perhaps a swedish kitchen cabinet from Ikea?

Photo inspired by my friend Mr. Akbar. He's a street art photographer with more than 10.000 photos. He doesn't make the graffiti himself but takes photos of it. Have a visit to his stream and just look and enjoy graffiti or hate them.

The clouds cleared out just in time for this long-exposure nightscape image taken during one of my night photography workshops in Arches National Park. And with no moonlight, just a little reflected light pollution from the little town of Moab, Utah, the lighting was amazing! So with swirling milky way skies over the Three Gossips (on the left), we set up for a some great long-exposure images...

"The Old Mill was the watermill of Hobbiton, owned and run by the Sandyman Family. The Old Mill was a corn mill powered by a large water wheel. It lay directly adjacent to the bridge across the Water and next to the Old Grange as well."

This is the water mill that can be seen in the Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring when Gandalf arrives in Hobbiton for Bilbo's birthday and crosses the bridge. I hope you will enjoy it, I apologize in advance for the photo, I didn't managed, unfortunately, to capture the water.
