Minarets – Ediza Lake – Ansel Adams Wilderness

This is a scene I captured in 2009. Back then I processed a three-shot HDR version, which after recently reviewing, I decided that I was not happy with the final image. Back then, I had very minimal Photoshop skills, and I thought HDR would be the best way to process the shot.

As I have now developed a workflow using Adobe Raw, I decided to re-process this single image. Final tweaks were still performed in Photoshop.

A 6.5 mile hike is required to access this Sierra Wilderness gem. The destination makes the hard work worth it, as you arrive at Ediza Lake, idyllically nestled below Mt. Ritter, Mt. Banner and The Minarets.

Ok, I saved the best my favorite for last. (I actually have a few others, but won’t post for awhile, if at all.)

After I came up with the idea to do a 12-photo panorama using my new 80-200mm lens, it was already fully night. This was the result. While I was happy with the frames (it wouldn’t be until I went home days later I actually edited/merged the photos into a panorama), I knew I wanted to return and try the same while there was still some light in the sky to illuminate the buildings. This 6-photo image [6c1r] was shot two days later. Each frame was exposed 2.5sec.

I hope you can look past the watermarks – I know they’re annoying – but I wanted to share this larger than the 1024px version I normally do. This “original” size is only 40% of its actual size. Please have a look. There aren’t many photos I’m proud of, but I liked the way this came out.

Itaguaçu is a neighborhood of the Brazilian city of Florianopolis, the state capital of Santa Catarina. It is situated in the mainland portion of the city to the south, between the neighborhoods of Coconut Well and Shelter Bay and South Itaguaçu The name is of Tupi origin and literally means "Big Stones Nursery" or "place where there are Big Rocks". These stones are interesting granite formations on the beach Itaguassu and amid the sea of the South Bay, there is even a legend that tells of witches who have been petrified, giving rise to the stones, one of which seems to have a hat, and also 6 is a set of stones that form a kind of a circle with a seventh stone in the middle (an allusion to Satanic ritual)

It's very rare that we get to see frozen lakes here in the West Coast. The last time the road to this lake was open in January was 1976. This past January Diego and I spend a couple of days admiring the frozen lakes. This is Tenaya Lake, located in Yosemite National Park, CA. Have a great week everyone and may the light be with you. It feels good to be finally posting on Flickr after a long gap. I have been busy, unwell and lazy all at the same time and therefore haven't had the time to spend time here.

This is a long exposure shot from my last year's trip to Goa, here in India. A friend of mine did a great job of playing statue for me for about 10 seconds to get a near perfect image. You can still see the blur in the cigarette but I still like the overall look and feel of this image.

I hope to catchup with all your streams today. Have a wonderful week, everyone!

On the 3th of February, the Netherlands received so much snowfall. According to the National weather center KNMI in some parts of the north of Holland lies between 5 to 6 inches of snow. Normally the Netherlands get no more than between 3 and 5 inches of snow. It does occasionally snow in Amsterdam in February, but that almost always means just a light dusting. If you think the city is attractive in dry weather, just wait until you wake up one morning to see it covered in a thin coat of fresh snow. With the canals in the city and occasional high winds, there can be a nip in the air, but packing gloves and a scarf should keep you warm enough. But not only in Amsterdam, temperatures freezing are sweeping across Europe. The snow had a significant impact on social life and caused traffic problems in the north of the Netherlands, while in other parts of the country, police have been busy with a number of weather related accidents. The Dutch rail networks were severely affected as usual when it's bad weather. But kids love to play in this snowy world Life it beautiful, isn't it?

This weekend I walk in my neighbourhood and made some photos of the snow. When it snows it’s light dusting and really beautiful. The Prinsenstraat leads its way to a big and monumental church – De Oude Kerk - The Old Church dominates over the Red Light District. Although originally built as a Catholic place of worship, today the Oude Kerk is one of the unique buildings expressing the national character of Dutch Protestantism. Through its exceptional architecture, high windows full of light, beautifully sculpted misericords in the choir, impressive old granite gravestones on its floor, as well as through its unique history omnipresent in the building, the Oude Kerk symbolizes the tradition and the present-day of Amsterdam..

Sneeuwballen gevecht, sneeuwpoppen maken of sleetje rijden.

This high oblique panorama shows Morocco and Spain as photographed by the Expedition 30 crew members aboard the International Space Station. The Atlantic Ocean, Straits of Gibraltar and Alboran Sea (the westernmost portion of the Mediterranean Sea) separate Spain on the right from Morocco on the left. Algeciras Harbor is the prominent notch cut out of the eastern end of the north shore of the Strait. A Russian spacecraft, docked to the orbital outpost, is in the upper left corner.

Crocus - The name of the genus is derived from the Greek krokos (κρόκος). This in turn is probably a loan word from a Semitic language, related to Hebrew כרכום karkōm, Aramaic ܟܟܘܪܟܟܡܡܐ kurkama, Persian and Arabic كركم kurkum, which mean saffron or saffron yellow (Wikipedia).

Seen this afternoon straight ahead from my balcony in Fellbach, Germany . How I already told you I often watch the beautiful sky with completly different scenes from my balcony.

You can see some of them in my comment ;-).

Update ... just heard from my dear friend Maria (many thanks Maria) that this cloud formation is very rare and called "Fallstreak hole". I searched for it Wikipedia:

A fallstreak hole, also known as a hole punch cloud, punch hole cloud, skypunch, canal cloud or cloud hole, is a large circular gap that can appear in cirrocumulus or altocumulus clouds. Such holes are formed when the water temperature in the clouds is below freezing but the water has not frozen yet due to the lack of ice nucleation particles. When a portion of the water does start to freeze it will set off a domino effect, due to the Bergeron process, causing the water vapor around it to freeze and fall to the earth as well. This leaves a large, often circular, hole in the cloud.

It is believed that a disruption in the stability of the cloud layer, such as that caused by a passing jet, may induce the domino process of evaporation which creates the hole. Such clouds are not unique to any one geographic area and have been photographed from many places.

Because of their rarity and unusual appearance, as well as very little exposure in media, fallstreak holes are often mistaken for or attributed to unidentified flying objects
