The pointe Saint-Mathieu (Lok Mazé in Breton) is a headland located near Le Conquet in the territory of the commune of Plougonvelin in France, flanked by 20m high cliffs.

The point also has a 56m high lighthouse, built in 1835.

The abbey held many privileges - right to rushes, right to furnaces, rights to a twelfth of jet, right to markets, right to fairs (Henry IV of France had instituted, in 1602, 5 annual fairs and a weekly market), right to measure wheat and wine, etc...

In 1157 Hervé de Léon accorded the abbey the right of flotsam and jetsam on wrecks in all his fiefdoms; in 1390 the abbey received the right to take 10% of the hull, cargo and rigging of wrecked ships. To this right were added the right of remains, confirmed in 1602 by royal letters patent. He accorded this right to the monks for "all those who perish in the sea, and on the coasts at Saint Mathieu, Plougonvelin and le Conquet".

Today abandoned, the Abbaye Saint-Mathieu de Fine-Terre, was said to have held the skull of the apostle Matthew, now lost in the ocean off the point. Its ruins served as a set for the summer TV saga Dolmen.

In 1819, Sir Thomas Raffles negotiated a treaty whereby Johor allowed the British to locate a trading port on the island. The Sultan of Johor is the sovereign ruler of the Malaysian state of Johor. It all was leading to the establishment of the British colony of Singapore in 1819. The port was strategically located along the main trade route between India and China. Singapore became an independent republic in 1965. Nowadays the country has become one of the world's most prosperous nations, with a highly developed free market economy and strong international trading links. Tourism in Singapore is a major industry and is the 5th most visited city in the world. Along with this, it also has one of the world's lowest crime rates. Public transport is easy when visiting Singapore. This includes the well-known Mass Rapid Transit system. MRT trains are fully automated without driver! Singapore is a green and clean city. It is also full of natural attractions and cultural heritage sites, from botanic gardens and nature parks to temples and museums. Chinatown is a small piece of China in the heart of Singapore. Once an enclave for Singapore’s Chinese immigrant population, the Chinatown of today is much-beloved for its blend of old and new, with historic temples and traditional medicinal halls sitting alongside hip new bars and lifestyle shops. You also can't miss the three monstrous towers of Marina Bay Sands which stand at the Marina Bay waterfront. Apart from the casino, the Marina Bay Sands also has a shopping mall, resorts, museums, theatres, an ice skating rink, and a Skydeck with an infinity pool.

Getting around Singapore by MRT (train) is simple. Singapore's public transport system is fast and efficient, and brings you to memorable attractions in no time. The United Overseas Bank Plaza is prominently situated along the shoreline of Downtown Core. The entrance with a sculpture by Salvador Dalí. It's the financial hub of Singapore overlooking the spectacular Marina Bay. It is linked via an aerial mall and an underpass to Raffles Place MRT station which is just a 5-minute walk away.

What must be Berlin's largest teddy bear. "Fynn" by Steiff is 4 meters (13 feet) tall, and can be found at the atrium of the LP12 Mall of Berlin on Leipziger Platz. I had to stand right in front of Fynn, because the comfy chairs placed right at Fynn's "paws" were all occupied by tired Christmas shoppers. The Mall opened in September 2014 and is Berlin's second biggest shopping mall. This December I visited it for the very first time, together with Sabine.R, on a photowalk. Taken with the Laowa C-Dreamer 7.5mm ultra wide-angle lens.

Steiff is one of Germany's most renowned manufacturers of stuffed toys / plush animals. It was founded in 1880 by Margarete Steiff, who designed and made most of the prototypes of her plush animals herself. Steiff's nephew Richard, who joined the company in 1897, invented the teddy bear in 1902. By 1907 Steiff had already manufactured and sold 974,000 teddy bears, the output continues to increase to this day, and Steiff plushies are sold worldwide. The Steiff company motto is "Only the best is good enough for children."

Happy 100th, Smile on Saturday! Keep smiling :-)))

Carthage College is a private college affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and located in Kenosha, Wisconsin, United States. It enrolls 2,600 full-time and 200 part-time students.

Carthage awards bachelor's degrees with majors in more than 40 subject areas and master's degrees in three areas. Carthage has 150 faculty. It is an affiliate of the Wisconsin Space Grant Consortium.

Carthage College was founded in Hillsboro, Illinois, by Lutheran pioneers in education, and chartered by the Illinois General Assembly on January 22, 1847. Originally known as The Literary and Theological Institute of the Lutheran Church in the Far West, its name was soon shortened to Lutheran College and known locally as Hillsboro College. With a two-person faculty and 79 students, Hillsboro promised "a course of study designed to be thorough and practical, and to embrace all the branches of learning, usually pursued in the best academies and colleges".

In 1852, the college moved to Springfield, Illinois, and assumed the name of Illinois State University. During this period, Abraham Lincoln served briefly on the Board of Trustees from 1860 to 1861, while his son Robert Todd Lincoln was a student in Illinois State University's preparatory academy from 1853 to 1859. Illinois State University's enrollment dwindled during the Civil War and closed in 1868. In 1870, several faculty reestablished the college in the rural west-central city of Carthage, Illinois, where the college acquired its current name.

After years of financial challenges, shifts in Lutheran synodical support, and searches for a suitable location, Carthage's board of trustees voted unanimously in 1957 to open a campus in Kenosha, Wisconsin. The lakeshore campus was dedicated on October 14, 1962.

By 1962, the college launched an era of growth. The next decade brought a period of continuous expansion. Enrollment increased fivefold, endowment tripled, and physical assets increased 600 percent. In Fall 1995, Carthage enrolled 1,527 full-time students, setting a new record. Intensive national searches have built a teaching-oriented faculty holding Ph.D.s from major graduate programs across the country. Since 2001, the college has invested more than $130 million in new construction, major renovations and technological acquisition.

Thamudic and Nabataean inscriptions, depicting camel caravans, hunting warriors and various animals, are common throughout the Wadi Rum area. The Alameleh inscriptions, near the Seven Pillars of Wisdom and on the edge of the Diseh district, are some of the most comprehensive and best preserved.

OK, some of you might prefer "Don't Marry Be Happy", but... ;-) I myself have no experience with being married whatsoever, so I can't really say what I'd prefer ;-)

Fun upload for the weekend, also for Smile on Saturday's theme "(K)NOT SO BAD!", Sliders Sunday, and 2DWFs "A New Beginning". I hope it qualifies for HSOS, there is a knot, albeit a rather small one. But I think it's an important one: the one that ties the tins - which are supposed to bring good luck and happiness to the couple - to the bride's car. Please forgive the sugary white vignette, I tried to get rid of as many other cars as possible, and I also thought a little kitsch would be OK ;-) This was taken at the parking lot of my favourite garden centre that is much more than a garden centre, the "Königliche Gartenakademie", which is very popular for family celebrations as well. By the way, the German nickname for Citroën's iconic 2CV/3CV car line-up is "Ente" (= duck) ;-)

HSoS and HSS, everyone :-) !

In these days, as the nights get longer and the days shorter, I like to remember the time back a year ago, when we were together in Canada to discover the uniquely beautiful nature. And we were able to spend so many wonderful hours and days together, that we look back with joy and gratitude on this blessed time. My eldest son stayed in Canada for a other 6 months and did not return until February this year. In that time when he was in Canada, close friendships developed. His longing for the country and his dear friends was so great, that he went back to Canada this summer again, to meet there his friends and the beautiful nature again. This picture was taken at this time and I am so grateful to my beloved son, that I am allowed to share it with you, dear friends. Thank you very much Jonah. (Sometimes it seems to me, that my son and I can see such natural beauties through the same eyes. I would have captured this beautiful lake like him. I am so happy that we both have so much joy in nature and the passion for photography, to experience and share with each other the wonders of creation.)

I have tears in my eyes, because I too would like to return to this breathtakingly beautiful country with its fantastic landscapes. It was one of the best times in my life.

Thank you so much my dear friends, for take part of my personel journey and my deep feelings for this wonderful nature and also for the people who belong to this beautiful country. The indigenous people there deserve our respect and recognition. I am so grateful to have stirred the spirit of freedom and peace there. I was never as close to my childhood dream as I was in Canada in these days. I'll come back, God's willing.

To the picture: Peyto Lake is a mountain lake in the Banff National Park in the Canadian Rockies. The lake is fed by glaciers and is world-famous for its eye-catching turquoise color. The photo was taken in the early morning hours. This location is one of the most beautiful viewpoint you can have there.

A prayer of peace

May we seek the truth, and speak it quietly.

May we listen for truth in the words of others with open minds and hearts.

And may we always remember the peace that may be found in silence.

The White River, on Mt. Hoods southern flank, was the location of a pyroclastic-flow that occurred during the Old Maid eruptive period. This eruption occurred during the late 18th century, prior to Lewis and Clark's arrival. Although the White river is not visible in this image, it was easily heard - being situated at the bottom of the sheer erosion cliff about 10 ft. to the right of the camera.

We have had armored cars on this stream before and whereas I do have that "déjà vu" feeling, I believe we have not seen this particular one. We are in the center of Dublin the questions are what is the date and what are they doing there?

While there were not as many unknowns here, when compared to our other more evasive mysteries, derangedlemur, Beachcomber, and guliolopez have corroberated the key points; Of location, subject and date. The location is unequivocal - the corner of Henry Street and O'Connell Street (beneath Nelson's Pillar and the GPO). The principal subjects are confirmed as members of the Pro-Treaty National Army, including Captain Patrick (Specky) Griffin on the right, their Rolls-Royce Armoured Car (number ARR6), and an effigy they appear to have made of Anti-Treaty republican Rory O'Connor. The date, based on this effigy and other clues, is suggested as sometime within the first week of July 1922 - during the Civil War's 'Battle of Dublin'. Probably within a day or so (or even just a few hours or minutes) of Hogan's image of the evacuation of a nearby hotel.....

Photographer: W. D. Hogan

Collection: Hogan Wilson Collection

Date: Catalogue range c.1922. Likely first week of July 1922

The Perseids are a prolific meteor shower associated with the comet Swift–Tuttle. The meteors are called the Perseids because the point from which they appear to hail (called the radiant) lies in the constellation Perseus.

The stream of debris is called the Perseid cloud and stretches along the orbit of the comet Swift–Tuttle. The cloud consists of particles ejected by the comet as it travels on its 133-year orbit. Most of the particles have been part of the cloud for around a thousand years. However, there is also a relatively young filament of dust in the stream that was pulled off the comet in 1865, which can give an early mini-peak the day before the maximum shower. The dimensions of the cloud in the vicinity of the Earth are estimated to be approximately 0.1 astronomical units (AU) across and 0.8 AU along the latter’s orbit, spread out by annual interactions with the Earth’s gravity.

Some Catholics refer to the Perseids as the "tears of Saint Lawrence", suspended in the sky but returning to earth once a year on August 10, the canonical date of that saint's martyrdom in 258 AD. The saint is said to have been burned alive on a gridiron, and this tradition is almost certainly the origin of the Mediterranean folk legend that the shooting stars are the sparks of that fire and that during the night of August 9–10 its cooled embers appear in the ground under plants, and which are known as the "coal of Saint Lawrence". The transition in favor of the Catholic saint and his feast day on August 10 and away from pagan gods and their festivals, known as Christianization, was facilitated by the phonetic assonance of the Latin name Laurentius with Larentia.

——————

The lilac-breasted roller (Coracias caudatus) is an African member of the roller family of birds. It is widely distributed in sub-Saharan Africa and the southern Arabian Peninsula, preferring open woodland and savanna; it is largely absent from treeless places. Usually found alone or in pairs, it perches conspicuously at the tops of trees, poles or other high vantage points from where it can spot insects, lizards, scorpions, snails, small birds and rodents moving about at ground level.

Nesting takes place in a natural hole in a tree where a clutch of 2–4 eggs is laid, and incubated by both parents, who are extremely aggressive in defence of their nest, taking on raptors and other birds. During the breeding season the male will rise to great heights, descending in swoops and dives, while uttering harsh, discordant cries. The sexes are alike in coloration. Juveniles do not have the long tail feathers that adults do.

This species is unofficially considered the national bird of Kenya.

Discover Switzerland Part III

It was not an easy climb to this little jewel of the Swiss Alps, but it compensated us in the form of this magnificent view that we were allowed to enjoy there. What could be better than experiencing and enjoying the uniqueness of creation together on a sunny summer's morning? The serenity and peaceful atmosphere in this place filled our hearts with new strength and joy. This summer day was an unforgettable experience for us in the beauty of our beloved homeland.

I would like to express my gratitude to all my friends here for the nice and sweet words for my little work of love. It means having so many friends with whom I can share my joy in photography around the world. What a pleasure, what a gift, what a blessing. I wish you all a lot of joy and happiness out there in the world and beautiful nature that gives us so much.

Only when you love every thing will the mystery of God reveal itself in the things.

It is sweet to be absorbed in the great silence and to become one with nature.

Every being in nature, in man, in love must wait, be patient, until his time comes to bloom.
