Croatia is a country in Southeast Europe. It borders Slovenia to the northwest, Hungary to the northeast, Serbia to the east, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Montenegro to the southeast, sharing a maritime border with Italy. Croatia was part of the former Yugoslavia. A population of 4 million, most of whom are Catholics. Zagreb is the capital. Balanced between the Balkans and Central Europe, this country has been passed between rival kingdoms, empires and republics for thousands of years. If there is an advantage to this ongoing disruption, it is in the rich cultural legacy each has left behind. From Venetian palaces, Napoleonic fortresses, Slavic churches, Viennese mansions to socialist sculptures. But most attraction is the coastline with the remarkable clarity of the water and white pebbly beach. Despite being the fastest rising holiday destination in Europe in the past decade, Croatia still doesn't feel overrun by tourists. There are long sandy and winding beaches too, perfect for lazy days. Croatia is a beautiful country to discover many different landscapes. Dubrovnik is according to many one of the most beautiful cities on the Adriatic coast. This city in Croatia is also called the Pearl of the Adriatic. The historic center, or rather the completely walled fortress city of Dubrovnik, is on the list of UNESCO World Heritage. This part is still in a remarkably good condition. A wonderful place to discover on foot, it is a city with a diverse, but also rough past. Remarkably, the Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque churches, as well as the various monasteries, palaces and fountains have been preserved. They all tell their own story from the Middle Ages.
Dubrovnik is a city on the Adriatic Sea in southern Croatia. It is one of the most prominent tourist destinations in the Mediterranean Sea. The history of the city probably dates back to the 7th century. The old, completely walled fortress town from the thirteenth century is located at the foot of the mountain Srđ. From the immense city walls and towers you can look out over the city and the sea. Porporela is pier and breakwater in Dubrovnik’s Old Harbour originally built in the old times to reduce the intensity of waves, reduce erosion and protect boats and ships anchored in Dubrovnik’s harbour. It is very popular Dubrovnik sight to stroll to when walking around the Old Town. Overlooking the Old Town of Dubrovnik. In the distance there is a 16th century wooden "Pirate" Ship a traditional Karaka replica. You can book a sunset cruise from the harbour in Dubrovnik.

De vestingstad uit de dertiende eeuw ligt aan de voet van de berg Srđ. Vanaf de immense stadsmuren en torens kijk je uit over de tad en de zee. Porporela is een pier en golfbreker in de oude haven van Dubrovnik, oorspronkelijk gebouwd in de oudheid om de intensiteit van de golven te verminderen, erosie te verminderen en boten en schepen die in de haven van Dubrovnik voor anker liggen te beschermen. Het is een erg populaire bezienswaardigheid in Dubrovnik om naar toe te wandelen als je door de oude binnenstad loopt. France. Alpes. Savoie. Massif des Bauges. Département de la Haute-Savoie (74). Photo prise lors d'un aller-retour à la Petite Sambuy, au départ de la Station de Seythenex-La Sambuy.
La photo été prise dans la Combe de la Sambuy, en montant au Col de la Sambuy.
Au centre, on peut voir l'Épaule de la Sambuy (2120m) sous son meilleur profil, qui cache presque complètement le sommet de La Sambuy (2198m) mais celui-ci dépasse quand même très légèrement sur sa gauche (cf. mon indication sur la photo).
À droite, on peut voir le Col de la Sambuy (2080m). Une fois que j'avais rejoint le col, il ne me restait plus beaucoup d'efforts à faire pour rejoindre le sommet de la Petite Sambuy (2107m), en partant à l'opposé de la Sambuy et de son épaule.
Cette rando fut la 1ère rando de notre séjour alpin de l'été 2017. J'y suis allé seul car le dénivelé cumulé était trop important pour nos filles (960m). En fait, même moi, je n'avais jamais fait de rando avec un dénivelé aussi important avant ce jour. Bien sûr, j'aurais pu choisir une rando plus accessible à toute la famille mais les conditions météo étaient très incertaines et on essaie toujours de choisir des jours bien ensoleillés et sans risque de pluie et d'orage pour emmener nos filles. D'ailleurs, j'ai très peu vu le soleil jusqu'en milieu de l'après-midi. C'est là que j'ai pu prendre cette photo. Je suis vraiment très content que les nuages aient laissé passer le soleil à ce moment précis ! 🙏😊

Je suis content d'avoir réussi à poster 2 photos ce WE car je n'avais pas réussi à en poster depuis septembre (ça faisait plus de 2 semaines ...). 😊
France. Vosges. Alsace. Haut-Rhin. Photo prise lors d'une rando en boucle, effectuée seul, au départ de Katzenthal, en passant par le Neuberg, le Sommerberg, le Galtz et la croix de Meywihr. Comme le lendemain vers l'Ungersberg, j'ai pu y voir une ribambelle de parcelles de vignes teintées de magnifiques couleurs (jaune, vert et rouge).
Merci à tous les viticulteurs alsaciens de régaler nos yeux à chaque automne par leur travail acharné de toute l'année !!! 🙏😉
En 2019, je n'ai pas fait de rando dans les vignes alsaciennes pendant le magnifique mois d'octobre. Mais à la place j'ai découvert avec bonheur les environs du Hohneck à cette même période. En 2020, je n'ai pas encore pu profiter d'une belle journée ensoleillée depuis le début du mois. Certes, le mois n'est pas terminé mais c'est mal parti ...
Cette photo a été prise depuis la Croix de Meywihr. On y voit au 2ème plan le village de Kientzheim (qui se situe entre ceux de Kaysersberg et de Sigolsheim, juste avant l'entrée de la Vallée de Kaysersberg), devant les Monts de Sigolsheim. Et tout au fond on peut voir les 3 Châteaux de Ribeauvillé ainsi que le Château du Haut-Kœnigsbourg. J'ai également mis 2 petits bonus en légende sur la photo. 😉
Can you see the Little Egret up there in the willow tree ? The banks of the stream are so dense with vegetation I didn't see him (or her) until he flew up from the opposite bank. This is another one taken with my iPhone 11 while out on a morning walk with Marnie very recently.

On the extreme left side of the beach is a third platform, Ahu Niho Pou, without statues and almost covered by the sand. On one of the stone blocks of the façade is a reproduction of a symbol of the Rongo Rongo (talking tablets) script, which, according to tradition, was associated with Anakena.

Mon absence totale de connexion Internet pendant 2 semaines à Quiberon cet été a eu quelques bons côtés, comme celui de me donner du temps pour trier les photos d'anciennes sorties, comme celle-ci dans le Vercors l'été 2018.
France. Alpes. Massif du Vercors. Photo prise lors d'une rando en A/R au cours de laquelle je suis monté seul au de Tête Chevalière (1951m), en partant du village de Chichilianne, en passant par le Pas de l'Essaure et en longeant les magnifiques falaises du Ravin du Ruisseau des Arches.
Cette photo a été prise près du sommet de Tête Chevalière, avec une superbe vue sur 2 des principales vedettes du Vercors, à savoir :
o Sa star incontestée : le Mont Aiguille (2087m),
o Son point culminant : le Grand Veymont (2341m).
Je me réjouissais beaucoup de faire cette rando, en espérant faire plein de beaux clichés du Mont Aiguille sous son profil que je trouve le plus beau. Mais je n'ai pas été très chanceux car le Mont Aiguille a été dans l'ombre en permanence, à part un tout petit bout au soleil de temps en temps, comme sur cette photo. Malgré tout, j'ai quand même pu ramener de beaux clichés avec d'autres sujets qui ont été un peu plus généreusement ensoleillées. J'en publierai peut-être à l'occasion.

El mar de Vigo
La ría de Vigo es el mayor tesoro de la ciudad. Su origen, su motor, su pasado y futuro. De todas las rías gallegas, la nuestra es la que está más al sur de las Rías Baixas y se adentra en la tierra para mezclarse con el agua del río, mientras las laderas del valle costero se elevan formando montañas al borde de la costa, dibujando miles de formas irrepetibles...
Hermosa sin duda y, además, única: la ría de Vigo está protegida por las Islas Cíes, un parque natural en medio del Atlántico y puerta de acceso a la ría de Vigo desde mar abierto.
Éste es nuestro paraíso natural: el mar de Vigo, con sus aguas calmas y una riqueza marina sin igual. En ella, flotan alineadas las tradicionales bateas, en las que se cría el auténtico mejillón de la ría de Vigo, y se dibujan las siluetas de los más grandes trasatlánticos del mundo.
Porque, además de bella, la ría de Vigo es la de mayor calado de Galicia, lo que la ha convertido en uno de los principales puertos de Europa y en capital de la pesca.

Procida is the smallest island of the Gulf of Naples; it is rich in attractions and archaeology. From the ground floor of Napoli Centro train station, you can take the metro to station Pozzuoli then get off and take the ferry at the port of Pozzuoli. The architecture of Procida has a Greek origin. In fact, the history of Procida is concentrated first of all on the medieval village “Terra Murata” and on “Corricella”, the fishing settlement. The island has served as the set for numerous films, such as The “Postman”, and some scenes in “The Talented Mr. Ripley” were shot on Corricella. The landmarks of Procida reflect typical Mediterranean pastel colours. Procida offers simply cooking and at least 10 excellent restaurants with plain cooking based on fresh fish. This simple style never fails, thanks to the 20 local fishing boats. The specialties of the cooking are: stewed rabbit (which goes back to the Borbonen who came on Procida to hunt the wild rabbit) and spaghetti with sea-urchin. Procida has 6 beaches with crystal-clear waters. Spent some relaxing days on this wonderful island. Experience the real Italy, lovely people, great views, great sand and great food.
Procida is an island of sailors and fishermen, Procida simplicity is well summed up by the combination of it's excellent fish, outstanding lemons and pleasant white wine. A working fishing village Corricella with a restaurant dock area. One gorgeous port that looks like time has stood still which only adds to it's charm. Traditional fisherman working hard for little money. In the morning they leave with their private little fishing boats. Each fishermen knows how to throw the giacchio, a special and traditional fishing net. Waiting for fish. At the end of the fishing day they bring the fish home. The local fishermen on the island know all the tricks of the trade and have learned how to use this skill over the years. The fisherman displays his caught fish on the pier. You can immediately buy fresh fish including: Atlantic Herring, Seabream, Pandora, Calamaro, Ombrina and Octopus.

Vanaf de begane grond van treinstation Napoli Centro kunt u de metro naar station Pozzuoli nemen, uitstappen en de veerboot nemen in de haven van Pozzuoli. Je kan gelijk zijn verse vissen kopen waaronder: haring, kustbaardman,
zeebrasem, pijlinktvis, ombervis en inktvis.

[ENG] The citadel of the Alhambra, located on the hill of al-Sabika, in Granada (Spain), is one of the most important architectural complexes of the Middle Ages and the greatest exponent of Islamic art in the West. Its history begins in the ninth century with military purposes, it was gradually expanding and in the thirteenth century, with the arrival of the first Nasrid monarch Mohamed ben Al-Hamar, the construction of the palaces that marked his time of greatest splendor began. In fact, the valley owns eight volcanoes inside, one the reasons Alexander von Humboldt named the region "Avenue of Volcanoes".
When many think of Ecuador, we often think of Galapagos and the equator, but it’s not always the case that Ecuador is thought of in tandem with the majestic Avenue of the Volcanoes that it sits along. That’s right, Ecuador is full-on Volcano Country! But fear not, for this does not by any means detract from how impressively safe the country is to visit! If anything, it adds tremendously to the overall geographic and scenic beauty that’s found throughout. Ecuador is home to 47 volcanoes in total (both active and extinct), with 15 in volcanoes Galapagos and 32 on the mainland.
The small country is the third in number of volcanoes, it only loses to the continent countries, USA and Russia, but it does not lose in altitude, the highest in the world.

With its elevation of 5,023 metres (16,480 ft), Tungurahua just over tops the snow line (about 4,900 metres (16,100 ft)).
Tungurahua's top is snow-covered and did feature a small summit glacier which melted away after the increase of volcanic activity in 1999.

The history of the town has been intimately linked to the highly-active Tungurahua volcano. In October 1999, all 17,000+ residents were forced to evacuate the city for weeks.

In 1999 the Tungurahua volcano was activated and the population of Baños was completely evacuated. Since that year, the Tungurahua remains active presenting major eruptions in 1999, 2000 and 2006.

I climbed this volcano (summit) in two days. One of the days (the last day), from 2 am to 7 am.
A huge sense of physical and mental achievement.

There is something for everyone in Andalusia, from culture to beautiful terraces, sights, long beaches, beautiful inland areas with beautiful reservoirs, mountains and nice villages to visit. Málaga is second-most populous city of Andalusia. Known to many as the capital of the Costa del Sol, Málaga is more than a seaside city. Málaga's history spans about 2,800 years, making it one of the oldest cities in Europe. It was founded about 770 BC by the Phoenicians as Malaka. The archaeological remains and monuments from the Phoenician, Roman, Arabic and Christian eras make the historic center of the city an "open museum", displaying its history of nearly 3,000 years. With powerful walls visible from almost anywhere in the city, Málaga’s Alcazaba is a Moorish fortress palace and valuable monument from the Islamic era. Just down the hill, beyond the outer walls of the Alcazaba is a Roman Theatre the best ancient monument in the city.
Málaga is one of the oldest cities in Spain and hallmarks of its rich past are scattered across Malaga: the cobbled streets of the old quarter, its mountainside Roman Amphitheatre, the Moorish citadels of the Alcazaba and Gilfarbaro. And even once the sight-seeing is done, there’s still a city full of rooftop bars, gleaming boutique stores and nearby beaches to explore. At our first roundabout of Málaga we have such a nice vista all around town. The fountain of the Three Graces in the centre of the roundabout and the Moorish fortress Alcazaba and Jardines de Pedro Luis Alonso on the background. The roundabout constitutes an important axis where the Park promenade, port of Malaga meet the Alcazaba tunnel.

Het mooie Andalusië, het land van de olijven, sinaasappels, zonnebloemen, mooie bergketens en valleien, leuke witte bergdorpen met mooie pleintjes, is een brug tussen twee continenten, Afrika en Europa, en is het punt waar de Atlantische Oceaan en de Middellandse Zee elkaar ontmoeten. Er is voor elk wat wils in Andalusië, van cultuur tot mooie terrasjes, bezienswaardigheden, lange stranden, prachtige binnenlanden met mooie stuwmeren, bergen en leuke dorpen om te bezoeken. Málaga is de tweede meest bevolkte stad van Andalusië. Málaga is bij velen bekend als de hoofdstad van de Costa del Sol en is meer dan een stad aan zee. De geschiedenis van Málaga beslaat ongeveer 2.800 jaar en is daarmee een van de oudste steden van Europa. Het werd gesticht rond 770 voor Christus door de Feniciërs als Malaka. De archeologische overblijfselen en monumenten uit de Fenicische, Romeinse, Arabische en christelijke tijdperken maken van het historische centrum van de stad een "open museum", met een geschiedenis van bijna 3000 jaar. Met dikke muren zichtbaar vanuit bijna overal in de stad, is Alcazaba Alcazaba een Moors vestingpaleis en een waardevol monument uit de islamitische tijd. Net de heuvel af, voorbij de buitenmuren van het Alcazaba, is een Romeins theater het beste oude monument in de stad. Bij de eerste rotonde in Málaga hebben we zo'n mooi uitzicht over de hele stad. De fontein van de drie nimfen in het midden van de rotonde en het Moorse fort Alcazaba op de achtergrond.

At the gates of La Paz, the Valley of the Moon is a sort of desert of rocks sculpted by the elements, with lots of fairy chimneys.
The site is well laid out with trails on which we can discover this geological curiosity.

Aux portes de la Paz, la Vallée de la Lune constitue une sorte de désert de rochers sculpté par les éléments, avec plein de cheminée de fées.

Tonight, we sleep in an Indian community on Lake Titicaca, we are at 3812 m (12507 ft) altitude .
A change of scenery guaranteed !
The comfort was rustic, and there was no heating to overcome the cold of the night at this altitude. But fortunately, big wool blankets locally made kept us warm.

Ce soir , nous dormons dans une communauté indienne au bord du lac Titicaca, on est à 3812 m d'altitude. Un dépaysement garanti !
Le confort était rustique, et il n'y avait pas de chauffage pour pallier au froid vif de la nuit à cette altitude.
Mais heureusement, de grosses couverture en laine faites sur place nous ont tenu bien chaud.

An incredible light bathed Machu Picchu as we went down to the site. It illuminated and enhanced the unbelievable architecture of this outstanding Inca city, like a huge stone vessel on the mountain.

Blast furnaces are used to convert iron ore into pigs iron. An elevator loads the furnace with alternating layers of limestone and a mixture of iron ore and coke. The basic chemistry is the reaction of CO (carbon monoxide) and Fe2O3 (iron oxide) to create Fe (iron) and CO2 (carbon dioxide). Although the process generates large quantities of CO2, there is currently no economically reasonable substitute. Pigs iron is further processed to reduce it's carbon content, producing various grades of steel.
Bethlehem Iron was originally established as the Saucona Iron Company in 1857. In order to increase profitability, Bethlehem Steel Company was formed in 1899 under shared ownership (Bethlehem Iron) . After the sale of the Bethlehem Steel, to Charles M. Schwab, they became one company - Bethlehem Steel.
By the mid-1980's, foreign competition, failure to modernize and rising pension costs resulted in lost profitability - and site closure in 1995.
Currently, the site is a ten-acre campus dedicated to arts and culture know as SteelStacks. Over 1000 concerts and many festivals are held there every year.
