There is a rapture on the lonely shore,

There is society, where none intrudes,

Tonight, we sleep in an Indian community on Lake Titicaca, we are at 3812 m (12507 ft) altitude .

The comfort was rustic, and there was no heating to overcome the cold of the night at this altitude. But fortunately, big wool blankets locally made kept us warm.

I think it's about time that I start to post some of the photos I took way back in July '18 at the Tierpark Berlin during a very nice photowalk with Sabine.R and marionrosengarten.

The gibbon has been voted "Zootier des Jahres 2019" (zoo animal of the year 2019) in Germany. Unknown to most of us, gibbons, who are hominids / family Hylobatidae (I didn't know that), are the most threatened species of smaller apes in the world. Especially significant habitat loss, excessive trade with gibbons as extravagant "articles of food" or "medicine" pose huge problems to the "singing climbers", plus the fact that baby gibbons are often sold as pets (after their mothers have been killed). The species protection campaign "Zootier des Jahres" supports two important gibbon protection programmes, one in Laos ("Project Anoulak"), and one in Vietnam.

For more info on gibbons, please check the Tierpark website (English):

www.tierpark-berlin.de/en/animals/details/white-handed-gi...

And Wikipedia:

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gibbon

Light conditions on that day weren't good, it was a cloudy day with very diffuse and scattered "light", so the three of us struggled to get sharp and crisp captures, and this, while "OK sharp", though not sharp all over, was also rather grainy, especially the background, which is why I applied a soft glow effect to it, but masked the gibbon and his climbing frame out for better details.

Happy (Sliders) Sunday, Everyone, and have a relaxed new week ahead :-)

Crazy Tuesday: #NEW

Laowa C-Dreamer 7.5 F/2 | Photowalk with Sabine.R

Not taken this week, but I didn't get around to go out on a photowalk (ghastly weather, grey days, too) with my brand NEW ultra wide-angle lens, the Laowa C-Dreamer 7,5mm F/2. However, this one was taken with that new lens, so I hope it qualifies; I promise that I will take the capture in the week after a new theme will be announced the next time I participate :-)

Now for the title: You might wonder why I chose "Topless" as a title. Well, if you take a look at my capture of the Berliner Fernsehturm (Berlin TV Tower) taken from the platform of the Park Inn Hotel (please see first comment), and you take a closer look at the TV Tower's base in that capture, you will get an idea what this building is - yes, right: it's the TV Tower's base building complex which is used as an exhibition center ("Body Worlds", "Little BIG City"), it also houses restaurants and shops; the building on the right is the city hall of Berlin, known as Rotes Rathaus (Red City Hall). But where is the TV Tower? I seriously debated with myself whether I could actually dare to remove it from the capture or not. In the end I decided to upload the retouched version, as it gives the building a lighter, aerier look, almost that of a spaceship that has just landed. With the TV Tower (which you would normally see on the left upper corner behind the base building) it looked like a building on a stick from this point of view, and you wouldn't have seen much of the tower anyway. Please forgive my little Photoshop shenanigan :-) After all, photos don't lie, do they ;-) ?

And because two are always better than one, I would like to wish you all a very Happy 2019 once again, and a relaxed first week of January as well :-)

Oben ohne

From the 8th century BC. the settlements of the surrounding hills united and the city of Rome was founded. Trajan's Forum was the last built and also largest of the five imperial and public squares of Rome. In 112 it was opened to celebrate the conquest of Dacia. The forum was financed with the war booty. However, the complex was only completed in the year 143. The square, which had the classic rectangular shape, was entered by walking under a triumphal arch. On both sides of the square there were colonnades, at the rear it was closed by the Basilica Ulpia. In front of the basilica there was an impressive equestrian statue of the emperor, while behind the basilica the Column of Trajan rose. The column is 38 meters high and can be seen from afar, but you can only admire the beautiful decorations up close. The beautiful monument is made of marble from Carrara and decorated with a frieze that represents the victory of Trajan on the rebellious Dacia. The Forum of Trajan is near the center of Rome. The nearest metro station is the station at the Colosseum at a five minute walk.

We visit Rome on a hot summersday and temperatures soar to over 40ºC. Photo of the Forum of Trajan. The Forum is one of the imperial forums in Rome. According to many, this forum was the most impressive of all. We took it slow amid region’s most intense heatwave.

From the 8th century BC. the settlements of the surrounding hills united and the city of Rome was founded. The Forum Romanum also known as Foro Romano, is a plaza surrounded by the ruins of several important ancient government buildings at the center of the city of Rome. The Arch of Septimius Severus at the Roman Forum is a white marble triumphal arch dedicated in AD 203 to the Parthian victories. The Arch is about 23 metres in height. The Arch stands close to the foot of the Capitoline Hill. A flight of steps originally led to the central opening. Over the centuries, the ground level on the forum had risen considerably. The lower part of the Arch of Septimius Severus was under the ground, so that the bow seemed to be much lower. In the Middle Ages, the arch was partially built into a nearby church and a fortress. Because of this, the arch never broke down what has happened with many other ancient monuments. In the 18th century the large excavations on the Forum started and the arch was restored to its former state. It is now one of the most remarkable Roman structures left over at the Forum.

The Arch of Septimius Severus, erected in AD 203, stands in Rome. The triple triumphal arch was one of the most richly decorated of its type and even today, although badly damaged, it stands in the Forum Romanum as a lasting and imposing monument to Roman vanity. The Temple of Saturn on the right side was an ancient Roman temple to the god Saturn. Its ruins stand at the foot of the Capitoline Hill and is traditionally dated to 497 BC. We visit Rome on a hot summersday and temperatures soar to over 40ºC. We took it slow amid region’s most intense heatwave.

In order to get many of the valley shots with minimal foreground in the way, I had to stand inside bushes like the one in the foreground of this image. I decided it was a good idea to take a picture of the actual hiking trail itself to remember what the hiking conditions were like to get these amazing views (even though you can get nearly equivalent views from the roadway itself - HA!). Also, for those who have never been to Yosemite, it is impossible to impress the scale of these mountains. El Capitan, the prominent perpendicular cliff to the left-center of the image, is over 2.5 miles away from the camera, and the camera is not zoomed at all. Just to give myself some perspective, I picked a point near Harvard University on Google Maps that was 2.5 miles away from the Prudential Center (as the bird flies), and street view'd the Pru over the Charles River. You could see it, but it was a tiny speck in the distance. Here's the link if you're interested: goo.gl/maps/AyBd7Dp6FQ12 . Here is the equivalent distance street view (assuming same zoom on the street view camera) from 2.5 miles from El Capitan (and much further from the other features like Half Dome): goo.gl/maps/Pdqwjyzopun
