Peñíscola, frequented by me in the past, obsequiarme wanted to welcome me with its warmth, its light and wonderful colors. The very soft sunset hues, and the dawn of intense and bright colors. A privilege, pure magic!
The lake was partly frozen topped with a light covering of snow in patches. I was drawn to the green of the tree which gives a subtle contrast to the prevailing white. (For those old enough to remember, the title is inspired by a Jethro Tull song ).

Verbier is a ski resort in the Swiss Alps, in the canton of Valais. It is part of the "Four Valleys" ski area, which includes the ski resorts of Verbier, Nendaz, Veysonnaz, La Tzoumaz, and Thyon. Verbier is recognized as one of the premiere "off-piste" resorts worldwide. Many top skiers have settled in the resort in order to take advantage of the steep slopes, varied conditions and vibrant nightlife. Verbier is also a popular holiday destination for celebrities, including Sarah Ferguson, Diana Ross, James Blunt and The Crown Prince Couple of Denmark: Frederik and Mary.
Verbier is located in the Val de Bagnes, in the Valais region of Switzerland. The resort lies on a south orientated terrace at around 1,500 metres facing the Grand Combin massif.
Verbier only has one access road, which starts in the town of Le Châble.
The Grand Combin is a mountain in the western Pennine Alps in Switzerland. With its 4,314 metres (14,154 ft) high summit it is one of the highest peaks in the Alps and the second most prominent of its range.
The Grand Combin is also a large glaciated massif consisting of several summits, among which three are above 4000 metres.
The Alps (French: Alpes; German: Alpen; Italian: Alpi; Romansh: Alps; Slovene: Alpe) is the name for one of the great mountain range systems of Europe, stretching from Austria and Slovenia in the east, through Italy, Switzerland, Liechtenstein and Germany to France in the west. The word "Alps" was taken via French from Latin Alpes (meaning "the Alps"), which may be influenced by the Latin words albus (white) or altus (high) or more likely a Latin rendering of a Celtic or Ligurian original.
The highest mountain in the Alps is Mont Blanc, at 4,808 metres (15,774 ft), on the Italian-French border. All the main peaks of the Alps can be found in the list of mountains of the Alps and list of Alpine peaks by prominence.
The Alps are generally divided into the Western Alps and the Eastern Alps. The division is along the line between Lake Constance and Lake Como, following the Rhine. The Western Alps are higher, but their central chain is shorter and curved; they are located in Italy, France and Switzerland. The Eastern Alps (main ridge system elongated and broad) belong to Austria, Germany, Italy, Liechtenstein, Slovenia and Switzerland.
The Alps are a classic example of what happens when a temperate area at lower altitude gives way to higher elevation terrain. Elevations around the world which have cold climates similar to those found in polar areas have been called alpine. A rise from sea level into the upper regions of the atmosphere causes the temperature to decrease. The effect of mountain chains on prevailing winds is to carry warm air belonging to the lower region into an upper zone, where it expands in volume at the cost of a proportionate loss of heat, often accompanied by the precipitation of moisture in the form of snow or rain.

----------------------
Peñíscola is situated on an isthmus, a rocky peninsula, originally joined to the mainland only by a sandy isthmus, which made it easy to defend, but occasionally flooded and was buried under the sea water. Currently, due to the construction of the harbor and the buildings on the isthmus, this curious fact has gone. On the rock stands the old town, which stands the castle of Papa Luna, Peñíscola dividing the coast into two halves quite different. It has wide beaches both north and south of the peninsula of the castle. The municipality of Peñíscola includes one of the most pristine coastal mountains of the Valencian coast, the Sierra de Irta, which ends in the sea on a rocky coast and some low points, high cliffs, like the Badum. The mountain occupies the southern two-thirds of the term of 81 km ². The northern part is a small floodplain shared with Benicarló and reaches from the sea to the peaks of Puig. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peniscola
Leddy Beach faces southwest and on this day, that meant directly into the wind. This image was taken in the late afternoon as the light was fading. The modeled foreground configuration is a formation of ice and sand.
Engrossed in my camera work, I didn't notice the couple undressing on the beach next to me until I heard their screams and laughter. I looked up to see a young bikini clad woman and her boyfriend in swim shorts drenched, emerging from the water, racing back to their clothes. I was wearing my winter parka & hood, expedition boots and shelled bottoms - and I was cold :)
Another classic winter postcard view on Turku Cathedral and Aura river. I think the man walking in the river makes it bit more interesting.

No séc.

December 2012 had higher temperatures than normally in december, also a lot of more rain unfortunately... On one of the last days, I spotted this gorgeous Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano with a carbonfibre wrap over the roof, mirrors and diffusor in Breda.

Aaahhhh, what an awesome evening. :)
I was at a relative's home most of yesterday into the evening hours. With a sudden stomach ache and throbbing headache, I said my goodbyes and went east towards home and couldn't help but notice this amazing dense fog scattered about the rural roads and in towns I drove through on my way back. My shutter finger was feeling itchy, so I pulled into the driveway and ran in to grab my camera gear feeling confident I was going to return home yet again with luck.
My luck was poor, as rain began to fall once I arrived. Without an umbrella or any camera protection I had to be on my way back as I didn't want to risk my camera getting wet over 2-3 good shots.
Likewise while I was out there in the misty fog I walked out into my car's high-beams with a feeling of happiness rushing through me as each several yards I stepped out into the headlight's beams this ghostly white fog halo became more apparent, with a noticeable white arc, corona/glory at its center, as well as my own body and tripod shadow known as the "broken specter."
Some quick info on fog that every atmospheric optic photographer should know:
- FOG forms any time there is moisture present, especially after it has rained, or due to radiational cooling or the air is saturated (100% humidity)
- in order for a great fog to form we need roughly 95-100% humidity or entirely saturated air combined with no more than a 5 degree difference between DEW POINT (the point at which clouds form when temperature drops to that number/temperature..this causes relative humidity to rise thus causing the air to become saturated) and AIR TEMPERATURE
- above I mentioned "radiational cooling," this is known to occur any time of the year actually when there are clear skies at night; the temperature drops of course at night as no sunlight is warming the surface of the earth and at night when clear skies are present, this war air interacts with the cool surrounding air thus causing humidity to spike and create these very low clouds among the surface known as "fog."
I hope some of this info and my story helps you see why I love atmospheric optics and getting out in the fog once it occurs here in Illinois...it truly is a wonder that Mother Nature can do such beautiful artwork on her own.

We just cut and ate cake, now it's time to sift through the presents, assemble the Angry Birds Hot Wheels Track, flip through the animal encyclopedia and put together the creepy crawlies glow puzzle.
I had hoped that this one would be a fiendishly difficult challenge, and so it proved! This is from our Fergus O'Connor Collection, and all that we had on it was Post and telegraph office: exterior view in an unidentified, rural location. I asked if we could improve on this?
Yes, we could! See the comments below for dogged pursuit of an elusive location - definitely Adrigole in West Cork. More tentative was derangedlemur's suggestion that the gentleman in the photo above was Jeremiah Cronin, 28, teacher and husband of Hannah Cronin, 31, Post Mistress, but that too proved to be the case!
All of us here at the National Library would like to thank BearaBoy for going above and beyond the call on this one. He tracked down Peg O'Sullivan, then aged 96, who was a goldmine of Adrigole memories. She knew Jeremiah because he taught the boys in her school, and he was married to Nan Cronin, the postmistress at Adrigole. Peg herself worked in the “new” Adrigole post office from 1934. Our thanks, and very best regards to Peg of Peg's Shop in Adrigole (1916-2016) a mighty woman with a formidable memory!

-----------------------------------------------
I think one of the best things of making part of a foreign land or travelling is that , each one of us see a different story of the same place.
Whenever I think of Istanbul, I associate it to its magic, giant bridges that unite Asia with Europa, the modern with the antique, the modern one with the traditional one; then of the magic Bosphourous: its strong winds, good fish...and don't know why- its fishermen..Before telling on other stories, i'll tell you a bit of fisherman tales of Istanbul....Men,women and children...people of all ages.
------------------------------------------------
ps: The main pic is the Ortakoy district of Istanbul, a serious of pics taken during and right after the rain mixed with snow. Pitty that the next day it snowed the whole day and i could've got pics with snow..

what is a life, when no time to stop to see a sunset?
what is a life, when not a minute to talk to a friend?
what is a life, when no time to reflect the meaning of it?
Getting a full moonrise over Yosemite Valley had been on my bucket list but had eluded me for some time. My original plan for the day was to shoot the full moon rising over the Painted Ladies with the San Francisco skyline during blue hour. However, the forecasted clearing storm in Yosemite was too promising to pass up.
While shooting sunset at Tunnel View, I was so engulfed watching the epic conditions unfold I nearly forgot about the moonrise. Once the sunset show was over, all the photographers began chattering about the impending full moon rise.
Somehow, no one seemed to know where or when exactly the moonrise was to occur. Figuring that we had already driven 4 hours to Yosemite, Alan, Aaron, and I decided to wait it out. Twilight began kicking in and all of a sudden, the moon appeared on the horizon north of Cloud’s Rest. At that moment, the entire crowd of photographers flocked southward at the Tunnel View overlook.
Initially I focused on shooting the moon using my tele lens in hopes of getting a giant moon framed with Half Dome. However, the moon’s position had too much spread from Half Dome and the wider angle shot seemed more optimal. For my last shot, I threw on my 24-70 lens for a midrange shot with hopes of a light star from the moon. I really did not expect much out of the shot but was pleasantly surprised with the result. It was an evening worthy to remember: an epic sunset followed by a full moon rise over Yosemite Valley.

San Trovaso is a popular district.
There are still one of the last squeri of Venice, a repair shop gondolas and other boats of the Venetian lagoon.
In the 17th century, descended from their original Alps, probably Cadore, the craftsmen have built their homes and workshop, and at home.
Right in Venice, so we find this amazing set of "alpine chalets."
The squero San Trovaso is one of the most active currently.

My father took this photo with my Brownie camera, his was lost in the war when his plane crash landed. Came across this photo whilst looking for the previous upload. Taken over 50 years ago before Wainwright had published all his books but we managed to find our way without him! I know we had walked along that valley before making the ascent, no car in those days and buses don't start early enough. All our climbs were done like that, one often walked a good 5-10 miles just to get started. Not only that but other things were different too: multi-coloured jumper knitted by my mother, trousers sewn by my father, red hiking socks knitted by my grannie, maps were cloth-backed and lasted longer, compass came from an old RAF plane. Ebygum, but I can still drag myself up there, just can't remember where it was.............
GLENORCHY - QUEENSTOWN - NEW ZEALAND
After three days of miserable rain we had a relatively clear morning, so I headed out at 4am for Glenorchy to shoot the pier, the temperature dropped last night so we had a nice dusting of snow throughout the region, I had the pier to myself all morning and finally settled on the classic composition.
I hope everyone is having a nice start to the year.
This one is taken this afternoon at the Skangass gas terminal in Tananger. Nice place to be walking the dog.
Another panorama taken from the top of Cerro Seguro. This is a 28 photo composite.
As always, the large version is better.

Luchtsingel is a 350 meter span pedestrian bridge, which will re-connect Rotterdam Central District with the Hofbogen. The area surrounding Hofplein used to be place full of livelihood, when now it’s dominated by cars and lack of public domain. Luchtsingel is the first step in bringing back urban qualities adding small-scale interventions to the urban fabric.
Luchtsingel is a fully crowd funded project: anyone can contribute. Through web- and digital applications citizens will be given full opportunity of private development: small-scale, non-bureaucratic, low-budget. More information.
"Cheers to a new year and another chance for us to get it right."

On December 1st, Kinnaird Head (Scottish Gaelic: An Ceann Àrd, meaning "high headland") celebrated its 225th birthday. Kinnaird Castle was built in 1570 by Sir Alexander Fraser, 8th laird of Philorth. A powerful lantern was added to the top floor in 1787, when it became the Northern Lighthouse Board's first lighthouse, and a light-keeper was hired. The lighthouse has been modified over the years by the Stevenson family of engineers and was replaced by a modern lighthouse in 1991. It is now home to the Scottish Lighthouse Museum.

Wishing everyone a great hogmanay and a Happy New Year !
The Torrey Pines State Reserve has a multitude of trails. This particular hike was a reconnaissance mission to find Broken Hill and the rare Torrey Pines. I did find it ... and I will be back for some future sunset shoots. I continued on the trail that led down to the beach. I was planning on returning back via the beach but when I rounded the corner on this trail, I was greeted by high tide! So back the way I came! Should've fired up that Tides Timetable App!
Has everyone solidified their New Year's Eve plans? We are still plotting!

Gold Leader: "Deployment 4 is all accounted for and ready for departure. Who's ready to get off this living hell?"
Thresh: “I’m ready to light some more of those blue boys up. My baby just can't wait too either!"
*loading of magazine*
Sarah: "Don't get too trigger happy. You'll shoot yourself trying to get out of here alive..."
Thorne: "Copied, Gold Leader, I'm sending you the coordinates for the extraction point as of now... Be there in under 2 hours on the clock now and you should be able to avoid any unnecessary distractions.
Gold Leader: "Just received the coordinates. We’ll be there this time. And there will be no casualties, unlike last time. Alright boys, pack up."
Tancred: "Charges are set and secure. Our traces should be mostly covered up."
Thorne: "I'm picking up heat signatures south eastbound, so light the damn thing up"
Sarah: "Sni-"
*sniper rounds*
Vern: "Man down! We're gonna need a medic!"
Gold Leader: “Pull her inside and patch her up. Do anything you can to stop the bleeding."
"Thorne, call in the medics. We’re going to have a belated arrival… again."
Thorne: "I'm on it."

The New Palace and the jubilee column (erected between 1841 and 1846) by night viewed through the bandstand from the opposite side of Schlossplatz, the central square in Stuttgart, Germany.
The New Palace (German: "das Neue Schloss", which may also be translated as New Castle) is a building which stands on the south edge of Schlossplatz. The castle is built in late Baroque style.
From 1746 to 1797 and from 1805 to 1807, it served as a residence of the kings of Württemberg. (At other times, the Ludwigsburg Palace, a few miles to the north was the favoured residence of the royal family). The palace stands adjacent to the Old Castle.
The castle was almost completely destroyed by Allied bombing during the Second World War and was reconstructed between 1958 and 1964. During this time most of the inside of the castle was also restored and the building was used by the Baden-Württemberg State Parliament. Today it is used by the State Ministries of Finance and Education. Public tours of the building are only permitted by special arrangement.(Wikipedia)
The former German President (1984 - 1994), Richard von Weizsäcker was born in the New Castle on April 15, 1920.

Have you noticed that the number of photos from the CN tower at night has significantly dropped? Ever wondered why? It's because of the tower's own lights.
The LEDs that run the height of the tower are a great touch and a marvel to look at from the outside. However, to a photographer from the inside, its the worst possible scenario... Glare Galore.
This photograph was taken literally seconds before the LEDs came on, after that, it was a lost cause. I love this photo though, it's easily one of my favourites. Taken from the "skypod" of the CN Tower, Enjoy!
I wish you all on Flickr a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!
