So today there I was minding my own business shooting 45 Fremont in downtown San Francisco when all of a sudden a Shorenstein Company employee security guard decides to give me the finger in my photographs of the building. Next thing you know I get the typical hassle. Except normally when the guards come out all polite like and all this guy instead comes out middle finger a blazing and telling me that I'm not allowed to photograph the building from the public space.
He goes on to tell me how he doesn't like to have his photograph taken, etc. (hint, if you don't like your photograph taken, probably best not to come swaggering out of a public building middle finger a blazin', remember any old asshole can have a blog these days). And insists on telling me how if I want to photograph the building I'm going to need to get approval from building management. blah, blah, blah.
Well, this guy got off on the wrong foot with me in the first place so I politely inform him that despite his objections that I'm on public property and as such have every right to photograph whatever I want and if he'd like he can feel free to call the police and the three of us can have a conversation. Of course he asks me why I need to be such an asshole and I remind him that he was the one giving me the bird, etc. etc. All I am is a lowly photography hobbyist but that since he was being so nice and all that he could look forward to his photo being on the internet.
He asks me if I *really* want him to call the police. Again, I answer nicely, yes.

Sometime ago I wished that I can capture a traditional candlelight procession in an old town, viewing the ocean of illuminated faithful on top of a balcony of a century old house. The building across mine must be as old, spewing out rustic details of days of the past. The spot had be at the corner so that the candles will be a stream of curving flickring lines. Thanks to rox?, the dream became a reality last Good Friday.
Ruvee, you're the best!

Freshly caught- that was what they were. Sitangkai is in the basin of the Sulu Sea teeming with marine life. Being Muslim, the people of Tawi-Tawi rely on fish for protein. Beef is practically non-existent as the islands in Sitangkai are small. Goats and chicken are also few. But when you have a bounty of the sea right at your doorstep, you would not really miss terra firma meat.

I was on an open traditional temper boat when I took this shot. My subject of course was the sun-bleached cottonii seaweed being dried on the platform of this traditional house on stilts in Sibutu island. (This is an official business trip after all). The picturesque chance just presented itself: boards of attractive paint of teal over clear still waters at 8 early in the morning. The sun was not yet harsh and high so the reflections were long and lazy.

The farming of the seaweed cottonii, Eucheuma striatum, began in the Philippines in the 1960s under the auspices of the University of Hawaii, USAID and Marine Colloids, a US carrageenan firm. However, mariculture started seriously only in 1973 when a cultivar was discovered by a Sitangkai farmer called Tambalang. This variety was later recognized as a totally different species (and genus) and renamed Kappaphycus alvarezii var. tambalang in honor of Mr. Vicente Alvarez, a biologist of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources who became the first Manager of Marine Colloids and Mr. Tambalang, the true pioneers of cottonii cultivation.
Today, the Philippine still leads in the red seaweed farming and carrageenan manufacturing in the world.

One joins the Sinulog for several reasons: obligation, piety, community volunteerism, remuneration. But when you already are in the thick of it all, you soon realize that you are also there to have fun. These guys are seriously enjoying themselves and I applaud them for it.

Today is Valentine day 2006. Instead of roses, I select the love fishes to celebrate this day with Flickr member. This fish,in Japan, is called "Koi" which means Love. It's quite difficult to take photo of fast moving fishes with sunlight in shade. Photo is taken at Chok Chai farm house, Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand.
To take this shot, I inclined more than half body over the pond and my friend just held my hand preventing me falling down to the pond. However, I dropped skylight filter into the water, but got it back later.
Which love fish do you like ?

My first language is Cebuano and I thought my vocabulary of the language is adequate. Was I wrong. Recently, in the Cebu Pool, we discussed the meaning of mabulokon, as in the traditional greeting Mabulokong Bag-ong Tuig for the new year. I argued that the word means meaningful. Later on, I learned mabulokon really means colorful. So to you all, Mabulokong Bag-ong Tuig! (And we have 5 hours more left here in New York- tick tock...)

Ramena beach is popular to both tourists and locals. Situated in just one of the 3 gigantic bays of Diego Suarez, the immaculate white sand coast of Ramena is among the numerous pristine beaches that enveigle the senses of sunlovers. For locals however, public buses are scarce except during Sunday when day beach trips become regular for those who want to partake of a piece of paradise. We took a taxi to this beach on a Sunday and with 20 kilometers of beach to choose, empty stretches are the rule and crowds are non-existent.
For the nearly 3 hours that we were there, I chose to skip taking a dip. I practiced with my Rebel camera as the lighting was perfect and the people could not be any more generous with their smiles- or in the case of this child leaning on her napping mother, her lazy stare.

Of the countless frolicking children competing for my attention, these two are just those whom you could not refuse. They may have little in life but are rich in energy and hope. Pure in spirit and boundless with charm, they appreciate their beach like no other.

Sing with her:
Shiny happy people laughing
Meet me in the crowd
People, people
Throw your love around
Love me, love me
Take it into town
Happy, happy
Put it in the ground
Where the flowers grow
Gold and silver shine
(chorus)
Shiny happy people holding hands
Shiny happy people holding hands
Shiny happy people laughing
Everyone around, love them, love them
Put it in your hands
Take it, take it
There's no time to cry
Happy, happy
Put it in your heart
Where tomorrow shines
Gold and silver shine
(repeat chorus)
Hey, here we go!
Shiny Happy People

It was Children's Day in Brazil. I went to a slum called "Morro do Macaco" ("Monkey's Mount", behind the boy on the photo), with the Hummingbirds leaders from CARF (Children at Risk Foundation), invited by Gregory (its founder).
Inside this slum there is an large orphanage, supported by its own founder, her family and some people from the community. The Hummingbird project was opening his wings there, to share love, knowledge, education, creating new possibilities for those children.

NEGO DO CABELO BOM
Você é meu nego do cabelo bom
Alisa ele não
É você quem dita a moda em Paris
Não sou vaselina
Não vacile não
Não sou vaselina
Não vacile não
Neste dia de mar e nevoeiro
É tão próximo o teu rosto
São os longos horizontes
Os ritmos soltos dos ventos
E aquelas aves
Que desde o princípio das estações
Fizeram ninhos e emigraram
Para que num dia inverso tu as visses
Aquelas aves que tinham
uma memória eterna do teu rosto
E voam sempre dentro do teu sonho
Como se o teu olhar as sustentasse

Meet Inuk, upclose and personal.
Inuk is the Mystic Aquarium's male Beluga whale. He is an amazing creature who shows a great deal of curiosity and intelligence. When the crowds are thin at the Aquarium and there are only a few people in front of the glass he will sometimes stay and watch those people closely. Especially children who are more calm.
Some people ask if whales have ears at the aquarium...here you can see the small opening behind the eye, that's Inuk's ear.
Status: Vulnerable, growing risk; mostly from pollution of native waters but also hunting.
IUCN Redlist: Vulnerable
Cook Inlet Alaska Population: Critically Endangered.
CITES: Appendix 2
Wow! Featured as the #2 most interesting photo for July 4th!
Unfortunately Inuk died on the 20th of February 2010 from kidney failure. He was 28 years old and will be missed.

"Somewhere over the rainbow...way up high
There's a land that I heard of once in a lullaby.
Somewhere over the rainbow...skies are blue
And the dreams that you dare to dream really do come true.
Someday I'll wish upon a star and wake up where the clouds are
far behind me.
Where troubles melt like lemon drops away above the chimney
tops...
That's where you'll find me.
Somewhere over the rainbow... blue birds fly
Birds fly over the rainbow--why then oh, why can't I?
If happy little blue birds fly beyond the rainbow...
Why oh, why can't I?"
"Somewhere over the Rainbow"

"And I see your true colors
Shining through
I see your true colors
So don't be afraid to let them show
Your true colors, true colors
True colors are shining through
I see your true colors
So don't be afraid to let them show
Your true colors
True colors are beautiful,
Like a rainbow..."

"Suppose I were to tell you that the meaning of dreams
is not all that it seems and the ultimate truth is a lie.
Looking at me you see yourself
I am a mirror.Every face is someone else.
Look at me smile and you're the clown. And if I dance you turn around.
Look in my eyes and see your tears until the music disappears.
And the meaning of life is a mystery though we live it from day to day.
But the music of live should be harmony so that anyone here can play."
"I am a mirror"

The Cutty Sark is an historic British Clipper open to the public at Greenwich London. Photo taken with my Samsung phone camera.
Cutty Sark is a British clipper ship. Built on the River Leven, Dumbarton, Scotland in 1869 for the Jock Willis Shipping Line, she was one of the last tea clippers to be built and one of the fastest, at the end of a long period of design development for this type of vessel, which ended as steamships took over their routes. She was named after the short shirt of the fictional witch in Robert Burns's poem Tam o' Shanter, first published in 1791.
After the big improvement in the fuel efficiency of steamships in 1866, the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869 gave them a shorter route to China, so Cutty Sark spent only a few years on the tea trade before turning to the trade in wool from Australia, where she held the record time to Britain for ten years. Continuing improvements in steam technology early in the 1880s meant that steamships also came to dominate the longer sailing route to Australia, and the ship was sold to the Portuguese company Ferreira and Co. in 1895 and renamed Ferreira. She continued as a cargo ship until purchased in 1922 by retired sea captain Wilfred Dowman, who used her as a training ship operating from Falmouth, Cornwall. After his death, Cutty Sark was transferred to the Thames Nautical Training College, Greenhithe, in 1938 where she became an auxiliary cadet training ship alongside HMS Worcester. By 1954, she had ceased to be useful as a cadet ship and was transferred to permanent dry dock at Greenwich, London, for public display.
Cutty Sark is listed by National Historic Ships as part of the National Historic Fleet (the nautical equivalent of a Grade 1 Listed Building). She is one of only three remaining intact composite construction (wooden hull on an iron frame) ships from the nineteenth century, the others being the clipper City of Adelaide, now in Port Adelaide, South Australia, and the warship HMS Gannet in Chatham. The beached skeleton of Ambassador, of 1869 lying near Punta Arenas, Chile is the only other significant remnant of this construction method.
The ship has been damaged by fire twice in recent years, first on 21 May 2007 while undergoing conservation. She was restored and was reopened to the public on 25 April 2012. Funders for the Cutty Sark conservation project include: the Heritage Lottery Fund, the House of Commons Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Committee, Sammy Ofer Foundation, Greenwich Council, Greater London Authority, The Stavros Niarchos Foundation, Berry Brothers & Rudd, Michael Edwards and Alisher Usmanov.
On 19 October 2014 she was damaged in a smaller fire.
Cutty Sark whisky derives its name from the ship. An image of the clipper appears on the label, and the maker formerly sponsored the Cutty Sark Tall Ships Race. The ship also inspired the name of the Saunders Roe Cutty Sark flying boat.
