Huge news!!

Some of my New York snow photos along with an interview with me are currently featured in Glamour with information about my New York photography book: NY Through The Lens which accompanies the photos and interview.

What made this interview special is that it was conducted by someone who grew up with me in Queens. Danica Lo is now the Editor at Large Online for Glamour Magazine.

We spent a lot of time together as pre-teens in the 1990s and I have her to thank for introducing me to Morrissey and Siouxsie and the Banshees! It’s wonderful to see how well she is doing in her career. Very happy for her!

The interview covers interesting tidbits about my family's unique history as well as my tips people looking to take their creative passions and make careers out of them. I am lucky enough to be a full-time photographer and it's something I am grateful for every day of my life. It's nice to be able to share some of my tips with everyone :).

Hope you enjoy!

Government Center/Financial District

Boston, MA, USA

View of the Boston Financial District/Government Center skyscrapers from across the Charles River, Memorial Drive near the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge. The low hilly area in front of the skyscrapers -- just at the center towards the left -- is the famous Beacon HIll area. The barren trees running from left to the right is the famous Esplanade. Visible in front of the trees is the Boston Community Boathouse (that is the name, I think).

The Esplanade is a favorite jogging area, playground and for other purposes during the day and at night all year round. During the summer, the Hatch Shell area (hidden by the trees near the Beacon Hill area) is the center of free summer concerts and movie shows. Among the famous residents here is the Boston Pops Orchestra that used to perform quite a number of concerts that culminate with the 4th of July Concert and Fireworks extravaganza. The Charles River at the time would be teeming with yatchs and small boats, while both all sides of the Charles River completed as a "circle" by the Longefellow Bridge and the Harvard Bridge would be teeming with Independence Day revellers, estimated usually to number about half a million.

Once, the Beacon Hill was really a hill. However, its top was lopped off at some point to fill up the banks of the Charles River which used to be more than a mile wide (about 1.6miles, if I am not mistaken) in the area shown here. Most of the landfill however came from another part of Massachusetts (I forgot what place it was already). The result of this landfill reclamation would be the current Memorial Drive area as well as the land now occupied partly by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) campus in the Cambridge side and the Esplanade, Storrow Drive and the Backbay area.

Just after the skyscrapers shown here is the Boston Harbor, so that the (water) area shown here was once the "back of the bay" so that the land fill area retained its current name, the Backbay -- shown at night in WinterNight 2007: Boston CityScape.

N.B.

Except for the use of "unsharp image" and the automated resizing and "screen image optimization" to reduce the diskspace usage, no further image manipulation was done.

It's been a sunny day that Sunday, I was quite surprised to see fog appearing at night. So, I took a walk through the neighbourhood hoping for at least a few good photos. I got properly cold and properly tired, I hope it was worth! Early February 2018.

From Wikipedia, "light painting, painting with light, light drawing, or light art performance photography are terms that describe photographic techniques of moving a light source while taking a long exposure photograph."

I've had the idea for this shot bouncing around in my head for a long time. Ever since I got my hands on an RGB LED light, I've wanted to play with it in relation to the old, broken streetlight that sits in my grandparents backyard. After waking up at 3am, a bolt of sleep-deprived inspiration struck, and I finally got to making the photo actually happen.

Now that I've done it I'm already thinking about trying it again. Don't get me wrong, I'm happy with the result, but between the below-freezing temperature, and having to both manage taking the photo and doing the light painting myself, I feel like under better conditions I could get a better image.

The famous black church of Búðir illuminated by the ethereal dance of the northern lights. A magical night in the Icelandic countryside, where silence and light met under a sky full of stars.

62 images later, and I have this vibrant HDR image. The "original" HDR image itself was already pretty good, but it needed just an extra little something. Next thing I know, I have this artistic rendering.

from a balcony on gran vía, the heart of madrid comes to life in the cool winter night, bathed in festive lights. the historic white facades stand illuminated, with every architectural detail glowing against the night sky. far in the distance, sol beckons, with christmas lights and stars decorating the streets below. the contrast of warmth from the windows and the cool glow of the city’s lights creates a perfect balance, capturing the essence of a madrileño winter night. the view feels intimate yet expansive, a city both vibrant and calm, wrapped in the magic of the season.

I got stuck in traffic on my way here and missed the sunset. But the sky was so dramatic! Madrid, Spain Jan-2020

From "IntroducingMadrid.com":

"This ancient Egyptian temple is from the second century B.C. and was donated to Spain by the Egyptian state for helping save the Abu Simbel temple, as well as other monuments and archaeological sites, from being buried under the construction of the Aswan High Dam.

The Debod Temple was dismantled and transported to Spain, but it took two years to rebuild, since there were no reliable blueprints of the structure and some of the stones got lost during the shipment and had to be replaced. Finally, Debod was opened to the public on 20 July 1972."

Winter night view from the cliffs of Short Off Mountain, the southern terminus of Linville Gorge. An experimental image that I made because I wanted to test the amount of light on the landscape from the waxing crescent moon (still less than half full). The ratio of light from the city lights versus the moonlight was too high...hoping for some clear skies and ice when the moon is more full.

The tones are a bit warm in this image but the temperature was a chilly 20° F and the wind was blowing about 15 mph with gusts.

In case you noticed in the exif, I forgot to switch to my 17-40 lens before leaving the house and only had my 24-85. ...bummer
