Sunset view from the coach house window. Every evening it is different and this one was amazing!

A note on the horizon; the image is straight as can be noted by the trees, but I was dealing with a slope and odd perspective from above, so it looks like it isn't. Perhaps I shouldn't have posted it, but the sunset was too good to resist...:-)))

This past week most of Ontario went through a major ice storm. The temperatures dropped below freezing then hovered in the -1 -2 Celsius range for three days; all the while it rained heavily, causing major chaos on the roads and covering trees and roads in a thick sheet of ice. Branches too weak to withstand the heavy Burdon of the thick ice, snapped some trees even splitting in two, leaving such a mess for people to clean up. Many were without power for days. Where we live in Brampton the damage was not as bad as in the Barrie and northernmost areas of southern Ontario.

On Saturday after much of the ice had melted and the roads had dried, Karen and I went to Heart Lake to take some photos. In stark contrast to the past few days the sun was shining and the trees were glistening with the remaining ice. all around us you could hear the crash and roar of falling ice and snapping branches. Though these photos don’t reveal any of that chaos but portray a peaceful scene of tranquil beauty. seemingly as if the past few days had not even happened at all.

This photo was taken as the sun was melting the ice all around us these two geese were unconcerned or possibly unaware of the tumult of falling ice and breaking branches all around us. They seemed oblivious and quite content to float effortlessly on the still cold water of the lake.

‘Trees in Winter attire’. Went for a stroll after lunch, took a few shots then had to run back - yep, more rain!…..

366 - I’ve decided to do this to force me to pick up a camera other than when we are away on our travels (they will be posted as normal) - I will be interested to see what transpires, they will be varied I’m sure so we’ll see where inspiration takes me over the course of the year, hopefully at the end of it I will be a better photographer. Feel free to critique as you see fit, but please don’t feel obliged, I anticipate they will not be to all tastes. Have a great year and if you also have embarked on a 365 project then good luck in seeing it through, Alan:-)

Churchtown Farm Community Nature Reserve is an important place for both people and wildlife. It has a wide variety of different wildlife habitats, mostly hay meadows with arable fields, woodland, wetland, scrub, rocky shoreline, mudflats and an extensive network of hedgerows.

There is a rich history of quarrying, farming and maritime activities and the site’s two quarries and the headland running around the west and south shores of the reserve are County Geological Sites. From the reserve there are extensive views over the River Lyhner, Antony Passage, Forder Creek, the River Tamar and beyond to Devonport and Plymouth.

The unexpected warm spell has got me eager to see the real thing, but I have to remind myself that I took this only 10 days ago. Real blossoms are a little while off.

Descending From The Six Mountains ...

The best way to take photos is amidst the natural beauty of the great outdoors. so much snow and so little time.

Dancing Trees....

In the last days of December we had a fairly significant snowfall that started in the evening and lasted well into early morning turning the dull grey of winter into a white clean wintry wonderland.

this shot of three fir trees almost obscured by snow are the only things in the photo that have any depth. the line between earth and sky completely obliterated by blowing snow.

The Setting Of The Winter Sun...

Karen and i braved the cold yesterday to get some shots of Heart Lake. Southern Ontario was in the middle of a deep freeze, the wind blew clouds aimlessly across the sky. it was clear and sunny one minute and a blizzard of blinding snow the next.

this shot of the waning sun casting long slender shadows across the snow.

While heading up a steep trail on our snowshoes today, I came across these thin trees that were very tall. Snow was clinging to almost every branch it could find in this forest leaving very little bare bark. To get a sense of scale, there is a woodpecker on the middle bare trunk about a third of the way up from the bottom. Can you find him? Enjoy a Tree-mendous Tuesday!

Beyond The Horizon Line....

Karen and I braved the bitter cold to get some shots of Heart Lake. Southern Ontario was in the middle of a deep freeze, with temperatures nearing -32 Celsius with the wind chill. The wind blew clouds aimlessly across the sky. it was clear and sunny one minute and a blizzard of blinding snow the next.

ここ赤城では、美しい霧氷が12月によく見られるそうです。

より寒い1、2月の方が霧氷を見られると思っていましたが、

雪が木に積もってしまうのだそうです。繊細な霧氷は早い時期に見ることができるものなのですね。

Have a wonderful weekend!

This photo taken of the other side of the lake I think turned out really well. it took on the look of an oil painting, which I absolulty love.
