Winglet. These devices are to prevent wingtip spill reducing drag and therefore increasing fuel consumption but is it that effective on short haul flight. because Japan Airlines Boeing 747-400 used on domestic routes for example don't have the winglets.

Not many 757s at the legacy United got winglets; this is one of them. All legacy United 757s with winglets were either ETOPS-certified (for Hawaii runs) or on the p.s. service to New York City. Winglets will become more common from now though, now that the merger with Continental is complete and the combined New United invests in its fleet.

Winglet of B737-800 operated by Malaysia Airlines while flying over central Malaysia, making our way to Bangkok as MH780.
I got a window seat for my flight home from SFO, however it was on the right hand side, whereas all the interesting views -- San Francisco, bridges, bay, sunset, etc. -- were on the left. So, I settled for a purple sky and a wing.
Note the winglets. Gone are the smaller little sharkfins. The winglets must be providing better fuel economy vs the sharkfins.

A beautiful sunrise light on the starboard winglet of this American Airlines Boeing 737-800 bond from New York-LaGuardia (LGA) to Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW) airport. American Airlines originally introduced the type in February 1999 in their fleet to phase out its sizeable McDonnell-Douglas MD-80s fleet and now operates as many as 240 -800s. AA decided to retrofit its entire 737-800 fleet with Aviation Partners Boeing’s Blended Winglets in 2006/2007 as part of fuel efficiency measures.

The starboard side winglet on the Boeing 767-300ER for Delta Air Lines. This is approximatly 11 feet tall from tip to bottom. Very impressive to see this considering the 757's winglets were large at first sight too!
