Shortly before Lady Aurora went bananas this night, the visible aurora coalesced into a bright arc...this was already much better than what we usually see in Wisconsin, but the best was yet to come.

Tip of an airplane's left wing in front of some airport-streets. The plane is a Boeing 737 of Pegasus Airlines at Zürich Airport.
I reduced brightness and enhanced contrast in post-processing to make it a little more dramatic.
Many modern aircraft have upturned winglets to help with aerodynamic efficiency. As is often the case, nature was there first! A Grey Heron (Ardea cinerea) at Moor Green Lakes.
A very enjoyable night is just underway as aurora dances over Lake Superior...it never got very high in the sky, but stayed active from sunset until sunrise. Light streak right of center is the laker Edwin H. Gott downbound with a load of taconite. This is one of a series of images from the same location, it may look a bit familiar but has not been posted yet.

Honolulu shuttle arriving 34L. These are the only few B767's fitted with winglets in the whole of JAL and couple in ANA fleet that do far destinations in the pacific.

D-ABIA at the holding point for Riem’s runway 07. Note the "Official Airline München 1972" Olympic sticker.
53 years later, in 2025, this airframe was still active as AVIONS-1001 with the South Sudan Air Force and is reportedly the oldest active Boeing 727 in the world (source: skystef.be).
Note: D-ABIA (2) was Boeing 737-530 c/n 24815/1933 flying for Lufthansa between December 1990 and December 2014 (preserved with Lufthansa Technik Training at Hamburg).

Delivered to Lufthansa as D-ABIA on 31 March 1967. To ATASCO as OO-TJN then reregistered as 4X-AGJ in 1979. To Transjet as OO-ATJ in 1980 then to Jet East as N727JE in 1984. To DHL Worldwide Courier in 1987. Reregistered as N701DH in 1990. To Cosmos Air Cargo as HK-4407 in 2006, Air Linkers LLC as N727NA in 2014, Lyca Cargo as TY-FSJ in 2015, Air Charter Unit as 5Y-CIG in 2018 and Waypoint Airways as EY-724 by 2020. Damaged when it ran off the runway landing at Kigali in 2020.
According to scramble.nl, the airframe went on to Kavatsi Airline Logistic as 9S-AKL in April 2023 and then to the South Sudan Air Force as AVIONS-1001 in 2024.
