Winglets or Wingtip devices are usually intended to improve the efficiency of fixed-wing aircraft. There are several types of wing tip devices, and although they function in different manners, the intended effect is always to reduce the aircraft's drag by partial recovery of the tip vortex energy. Wingtip devices can also improve aircraft handling characteristics and enhance safety for following aircraft. Such devices increase the effective aspect ratio of a wing without materially increasing the wingspan. An extension of span would lower lift-induced drag, but would increase parasitic drag and would require boosting the strength and weight of the wing. At some point, there is no net benefit from further increased span. There may also be operational considerations that limit the allowable wingspan (e.g., available width at airport gates).
Wingtip devices increase the lift generated at the wingtip (by smoothing the airflow across the upper wing near the tip) and reduce the lift-induced drag caused by wingtip vortices, improving lift-to-drag ratio. This increases fuel efficiency in powered aircraft and increases cross-country speed in gliders, in both cases increasing range. U.S. Air Force studies indicate that a given improvement in fuel efficiency correlates directly with the causal increase in the aircraft's lift-to-drag ratio (Wikipedia).
It was definitely a crisp, cold night in northern Minnesota...parked as you see here for much of the night, occasionally venturing out into the -2F temperatures for shots as the aurora played across the horizon.

The 1898-built Hecla Island Gull Harbour lighthouse basks in the glow of Lady Aurora yet again...the slight red glow visible on the white-painted structure is from the active 1926-built light tower, out of frame to the left.

A beautiful TAROM B737 with winglets flying with F-16 fighters newly received by the Romanian Air Force during the Bucharest International Air Show 2017. I think I know where I wish to sit as a passenger: backseat in the F-16B :)

Shortly before Lady Aurora went bananas this night, the visible aurora coalesced into a bright arc...this was already much better than what we usually see in Wisconsin, but the best was yet to come.

Tip of an airplane's left wing in front of some airport-streets. The plane is a Boeing 737 of Pegasus Airlines at ZĂĽrich Airport.
I reduced brightness and enhanced contrast in post-processing to make it a little more dramatic.
Many modern aircraft have upturned winglets to help with aerodynamic efficiency. As is often the case, nature was there first! A Grey Heron (Ardea cinerea) at Moor Green Lakes.
A very enjoyable night is just underway as aurora dances over Lake Superior...it never got very high in the sky, but stayed active from sunset until sunrise. Light streak right of center is the laker Edwin H. Gott downbound with a load of taconite. This is one of a series of images from the same location, it may look a bit familiar but has not been posted yet.
