This is my personal "Best Shot of 2020". Taken during a visit at the Olympiastadion Berlin in September which also had been my only real photowalk in 2020. While the image in the first comment might be a little more compelling, because it shows the historical Olympic cauldron of the Olympic Summer Games of 1936 and also the interesting-looking open part of the roof of the Olympic stadium, this image includes the two things that made an already wonderful day special – and one of them also is a symbol for the changes the Corona pandemic has brought to our lives. The image of the Olympic cauldron was taken from the exact opposite position of this photo; while we were at the Olympic cauldron (here you can't see it, but you can see the marathon gate below the tall, slim bell tower), I noticed that all of a sudden a larger group of teenagers and children appeared at the opposite entrance of the stadium. I wondered what was going on, because I couldn't imagine that in those pandemic times there would be any school field trips. And soon it became clear what this was all about, because once the children had taken their places, they started to warm up by singing scales: This was a choir practice :) Of course I tried to find out which choir it was that got the marvellous opportunity to practice in the empty stadium, with enough, safe distance to each other, so I searched for "choir practice at the Olympiastadion" later and learned that this was the youth and children's choir of the Deutsche Oper Berlin (STRG/CTRL+ www.berlin-buehnen.de/en/theatres/deutsche-oper-berlin/). Here you can read more about this unusual collaboration if you like: STRG/CTRL+ olympiastadion.berlin/en/news/children-choir/.
And so the rest of our photowalk was accompanied by beautiful singing which tremendously added to the elated, relaxed, literally free mood of that day :) What a wonderful, unexpected gift which was made even better by that wonderful sunset we saw when we went back into the stadium for a few last shots: This was my personal "Wow moment" of 2020 :)
Dear Flickr, friends, I wish you a Happy and Healthy 2021! Let's hope that, step by step, the "new normal" will eventually be replaced by our old normal, at least a little bit :)

Casting On Calm Water....
From the archives...
The sun was setting over Heart Lake; the surface of the deep was calm and only the slightest ripple troubled the waters surface,
A solitary figure silhouetted in the fading light, disturbs the calm with a cast of his fishing rod. The baited hook breaks the glassy surface sending ripples across the calm

Fall Splendour......
Today Karen and I made our way to the south end of Heart Lake Conservation Area; The fall is a fickle time. some years the leaves changing colours are okay and others they don't change much at all. some years they last for a long time others a sudden storm and strong winds and its all over.
This is probably the last weekend for shooting fall colours in southern Ontario, the colour display is off the charts, so may varied shades of red, yellow and burnt orange.
I took quite a few shots today i will post them over the next few weeks as fall comes to an end and the seasons begin their slow change to winter.

Sunburst......
There are times when a photographer is out taking photos that stand out and are rare and unforgettable. this is one of those images. This was a shot from winter of 2017, it was a minus 20 degree day, a very brisk day for a walk and the snow was coming down very fast ;when suddenly the sky opened up and the sun burst through with a glare and haze that was blinding. I posted a version of this once before but this is a closer tighter image and it still brings back the memory of that icy day in december like it was yesterday.

Spencers On The Waterfront 2 ..
A few years back we took a day trip from Mississauga following the Lake shore all the way through Oakville and into Burlington.
We took this shot of the Spencers On The Waterfront.. that day it was extremely overcast and grey with the occasional hint of blue sky reflecting in the pale blue glass building..

Creditview farms 2..
Last year in early spring we hopped in the car just before dusk and chased a golden sunset across farmers fields and down rural roads... it flitted behind thick dark clouds and blasted through thin wispy ones. till it fell just beyond the horizon out of reach of my camera lens. It was the crowning glory to an outstanding spring day.
As we drove north on Creditview Road the sun started to drop rapidly, we pulled off on the shoulder so I could get a few last shots before the sun disappeared completely. I snapped this shot of the sun descending upon Creditview farms, sending splinters of light in all directions; bathing the field in a golden yellow glow.

we were in the midst of the forest where we happened upon this spot where a tree trunk was almost obscured by yellow and gold leaves, right there in the middle of the trunk was a single red leaf. it really stood out from all the other leaves of yellow orange and gold.

Casting Shadows...
A few weeks ago we made our way to Heart Lake and spend a few hours braving the cold to get some shots.
A brilliant blazing winters sun forced its way through the cloud cover shining like a million flashlights through the branches of my favorite tree.

The Great Awakening....
Out for an early morning stroll to catch the sunrise before the sun burned all the clouds away.
the sky was a mix of yellow, orange, blue and crimson. the trees silhouetted against the rapidly rising sun made this scene extra special.
Within thirty minutes the clouds had all dissipated and a pale blue sky was all that was left of this glorious September sunrise.

Swan Lagoon......
Spent a day exploring the Oakville waterfront; Our first stop was the Bronte Harbour Yacht Club and Bronte Beach Park.
This small alcove along the Oakville shoreline is a mixed walking path and sandy beach lagoon, gently carved out of the edge of Lake Ontario, protected by the outcropping of land at this point a single swan took shelter in the calm waters there and paid me a visit hoping for a handout.

Dark In The Park....
One morning in February I headed out very early, as overnight a light dusting of fresh snow had fallen. there was a white coating of snow on everything.
in the pale glow of the street lights the snow glistened and the playground looked eerily empty and bare.

Lifeless...
From the archives.
In December 2017a brisk winter photo walk with a few friends turned out to be a wonderful but cold day for some amazing photos.
This particular shot of a dead tree in the middle of the snow covered field turned out exceptionally well. I decided to edit it in black and white to add to the mysterious feel of that day.

In early January the skies were turbulent with thick heavy snow clouds, snow began falling in the early morning hours and persisted throughout the day leaving thick white deep snow everywhere.
just before noon Karen and I headed out to our favorite conservation area to get a few shots.

Expanding Upwards...
Monday morning I woke up and looked out the window and noticed a heavy cloud cover and the sun was just starting to break the horizon. i could see the hint of a golden yellow sunrise and hoped i wouldn't miss it.
I made my way down to the park and as I crossed the tracks I looked at the rising sun; the colours were enhanced by the dark cloud filled sky above. I had to snap off a few quick shots to capture what I was seeing. I think this shot does it justice.

A New Day Begins...
from the archives.
The forecast called for early morning thunder showers and inclement weather; Knowing they are the best days for sunrises... I made my way to Burton park and started taking shots of the sunrise.
the yellow and crimson blue hues of the sky only lasted a few minutes then were lost in the thicker cloud cover that suddenly enveloped the rising sun.

Riding The Wind.......
Karen and I took a day trip to Jack Darling park In mid february and it was a warmer day than we have had in a long time. We walked from one end of the park to the other. We travelled along the lakeshore till we got to Burlington. Walking just beyond the pier we spotted this seagull riding the invisible winds, coasting slowly, gliding just above the ice cold water. in the distance, amid the pale blue sky she hung above the frosty lake when a slight updraft carried her far out of sight.
