An important thing to remember is that even though pixel sizes keep getting smaller and smaller, the technology is advancing, so the smaller pixels are more efficient at collecting light. For instance, the Sony A7rII is back-illuminated which allows more photons to hit the sensor. Semiconductor technology is always advancing, so the brilliant engineers are always improving the signal/noise ratio. Far higher pixel counts, as well as better dynamic ranger, are thus not only possible, but the future!
Yes I have a Ph.D. in physics! I worked on phototranistors and photodiodes as well as an artificial retina for the blind. :)

View your artistic mission into photography as an epic odyssey of heroic poetry! Take it from Homer in Homer's Odyssey: "Tell me, O muse, of that ingenious hero who travelled far and wide after he had sacked the famous town of Troy. Many cities did he visit, and many were the nations with whose manners and customs he was acquainted; moreover he suffered much by sea while trying to save his own life and bring his men safely home; but do what he might he could not save his men, for they perished through their own sheer folly in eating the cattle of the Sun-god Hyperion; so the god prevented them from ever reaching home. Tell me, too, about all these things, O daughter of Jove, from whatsoever source you may know them. " --Samuel Butler Translation of Homer's Odyssey

John Muir: "When I reached the [Yosemite] valley, all the rocks seemed talkative, and more lovable than ever. They are dear friends, and have warm blood gushing through their granite flesh; and I love them with a love intensified by long and close companionship. … I … bathed in the bright river, sauntered over the meadows, conversed with the domes, and played with the pines."
"Between every two pine trees there is a door leading to a new way of life."--John Muir
"I would advise sitting from morning till night under some willow bush on the river bank where there is a wide view. This will be "doing the valley" far more effectively than riding along trails in constant motion from point to point. The entire valley is made up of "points of interest." --John Muir on Yosemite!

Had a great time waking up at 5 AM every day to shoot tunnel view and then driving around down in the valley to Half Dome, Bridalviel Falls, Cook's Meadow and the glorious Cook's Meadow elm tree, Sentinel Bridge, Valley View, Swinging Bridge, and more! Yosemite winters are made for black and whites, and Ansel Adam's ghost haunts the brilliant landscape scenery!
The most epic "Ansel Adams" view is tunnel view where one can see El Capitan, Bridalviel Falls, and Half Dome over magnificent trees, snow, rising fogs, and breaking mists. Enjoy!
Been busy traveling and shooting landscapes and working on my books The Golden Hero's Odyssey about the golden rectangle and divine proportion I use in a lot of my compositions! Also working on my physics book on Dynamic Dimensions Theory! The equation dx4/dt=ic is on a lot of the 45surf swimsuit and shirts and all! :)

Will be busy printing and framing in nice large, matted formats and frames and museum glass! Five of these photos will be printed on 40" x 60" floating wall mounted metal sheets! I think I know which--will share photos of the photos hanging on the walls!
And I am mounting some on plexiglass/acryllic--front mounting them! Some I am printing on lossy fuji-crystal archival paper too, and then front mounting 40"x60" versions to plexiglass--will send photos!
The secret to HDR photography is that you want people to say, "Woe dude--that's unreal!" And not, "Dude--that's not real!" "Unreal" is the word they use when they're trying to figure out the photo--what makes it cool--is it a photo? Is it painted? How'd it come to be--how'd you bend the light that way? "That's not real," is what they say if you have the saturation/HDR/ etc. turned up too high. :)

Dr. Elliot McGucken's Fine Art Landscape & Nature Photography for Los Angeles Gallery Show !

Tonight, we went on a road trip to nearby Red Hill. After wandering around looking for the right vantage point, we set up the tripod and camera on the path behind the cafe. From here, we could look out to the southwest over Woden Valley. It was stunningly beautiful. It was also shocking how much ambient light and haze emanated from the valley. It completely flooded the bottom third of this photograph with murky light. Above this layer, the Milky Way stretched diagonally across the sky, the bright Galactic Center and the dark Great Rift being the most dramatic elements.
In the lower left is the Southern Cross in the Crux constellation. Moving along the Milky Way, we see the Pointers in the constellation of Centaurus. Above this, towards the top left, is Triangulum Austrinus. The stars of the Scorpius and Sagittarius constellations dominate the upper middle and right middle portions of the photograph. The star Antares and the planet Saturn are the brightest objects below the Milky Way on the right.
Overall, I had mixed emotions. It was a beautiful scene, but the levels of light pollution were disturbing.

Woke to find that the night sky was clear of clouds. This was opportunity that I had been waiting for - i.e., a chance to take some night sky photographs using the 30mm fisheye lens for my Hasselblad 501CM camera. This lens is the widest C-mount lens, and should be a reasonable lens for photographing in the night sky.
It was immediately obvious that the width of the view meant that the Milky Way stood out more clearly from the background as a ribbon with a high concentration of stars and an elevated brightness.
The curves of the lines in our apartment building were the most obvious sign of the fisheye geometry. I find this departure from rectilinear geometry quite attractive, and refreshing.
The scene contained a number of notable structure - e.g., ...
- The Milky Way.
- The Large Magellanic Cloud (LMG) - The small, bright region just above the top of the apartment building near the right hand edge of the image.
- The "Southern Pointers" - Alpha and Beta Centauri (a.k.a. Hadar).
- The Southern Cross (Crux)
- The Coalsack Dark Nebula.
- The Jewel Box open star cluster.
- The globular cluster Omega Centauri (NGC 5139, Caldwell C80).
- The diffuse nebula "Eta Carinae" (NGC 3372, Caldwell C92)
Overall, you couldn't have wiped the smile off my face in relation to my recent acquisition - i.e., the 30mm f/3.5 fisheye lens for my Hasselblad 501CM camera body.
----------
The following is a reasonably detailed statement of the post-processing that I carried out. I have included this information "for the record" and to make it easier when I need to process similar raw image captures ("photographs") in the future.
The challenges included ...
- High levels of ambient (background) light that swamps the contrast and masks the more subtle night sky features.
- The brightness of the building facade which places constraints on the changes to the maximum exposure and the enhancement of the "highlights". ***
- The "murky" brown color of the sky which made it necessary to manage a change to the "temperature" (i.e., White Balance).
[*** This aspect could be side-stepped through the use of layering and blending, but I had decided to largely stick to processing without the use of these features.]
With the above in mind, the post-processing that I carried out in Lightroom ...
- Modified the Temperature (4200K).
- Increased the Exposure and Contrast (Exposure 1.45, Contrast 100).
- Broadened the mid-tones by reducing the Highlights and Whites (-100, -100) whilst increasing the Shadows and Black (+81, +100).
- Increased the Clarity (+100) whilst decreasing the Saturation (-50).
- Applied more subtle adjustments to the Tone curve (Highlights 0, Lights -95, Darks 34, Shadows -35).
- Permitted a strong reduction in the saturation of Purple colors (Red -50, Purple -100, Magenta -50) to remove the purple mantle that surrounded the brighter stars.
- Retained the default Sharpening.
- Applied a moderate amount of Luminance noise reduction (Luminance noise reduction 35, Detail 50, Contrast 0).
- Applied Color noise reduction (Color noise reduction 75, Detail 0, Smoothness 100).
- Used the maximum amount of Dehaze filtering (100).
- Utilized several Graduated and Radial filters to apply local adjustments to the Exposure, Saturation, and Clarity / Dehaze.

Enjoy!
