For this waterfall renovation in Weddington, NC, we moved many of the original stones and used them in other places around the falls. All of the big stones were removed from the stream area and replaced with much smaller rock. Now the client can actually see the water as it flows.
We also dug out & created many plant pockets which were filled with good organic planting mix.

In the garden at work. A very hurried snap as I was shift leading and had a million things to do. I love this though, especially in the summer when the water is running down it and we're sitting in the garden with the children, in the shade of the tree with windchimes hanging from it's branches.

About a year ago I came across a document explaining the idea behind this sculpture and unfortunately I cannot fine the document in question and I cannot fully remember in detail the content. The globe is the earth and it is treated like a football be men [males] ... it is abused.
The spelling of the name appears to vary - Cliona, Cliodhna or Cliodna - but it would appear that the correct spelling is Cliodhna.
Cliodhna Cussen was born and educated in Co. Limerick. She attended third level education in Dublin and Florence and is presently based in Dublin and Kerry. She works as a full-time sculptor using mostly bronze and stone. Cliodhna does graphic work in the Graphic Studio Dublin and she also illustrates and publishes Irish Children's Stories. She has exhibited widely and won a number ofawards for her work, including the Listowel Gold Medal for sculpture and the sculpture prize at the Oireachtas.
My daughter Lucy marvelling at the new (I think it's new, anyway!) sculpture/fountain/waterfeature in the Alpine Garden at Calderstones Park, in Liverpool. I'm reflected in the middle, sitting on the park bench.
Garden is open again on Sunday 5 July from 1 - 5pm. Ample parking in adjacent field off A5206 London Road. Dark tea cake - served with butter - by local WI rated 4 star.
Here's a picture of the pondless pond area, now with more plants. The hostas are from my neighbor, and some I planted directly in the water. I also added another clethra to the left of the boulder, and added more stones to make the boulder look more "embedded" as opposed to just sitting on top of the ground. Clethra attracts hummingbirds and butterflies. The larger mammals like to travel along the edge of the drop (where the trees are), so there's a "corridor" from the right then behind the boulder and to the left along the grass. I'll purposely keep this corridor open so they can easily pass. Many animals drink from the stream, the ones I know about are chipmunk, squirrel, birds, insects. There's young bramble, I think, popping up along the treeline, which I plan to keep most of so the berries will provide more food for animals. Once the berries develop, I'll watch to see who eats it. There's also some marsh marigold which is native to this area, though I'm not sure of any animal benefits. The chipmunk does like to run between the plants, esp the grass in the lower left, and I believe voles were using that area in the winter.
