Dear Mom,

I won't bother you with my usual apologies for the lateness of my letter. And perhaps for once, I can write without going through a defeating motion of trying to explain why I chose to be here. The terrible truth is I have not been responding to many of the letters that other people have sent me since the time I got into an altercation with the son of the Police Chief. There are many uncertainties and a lot of things may no longer be unavoidable. Everything that is happening here is depressing - with maybe an extreme rare case when Pope Francis came to visit the island. He may be our one last hope to redeem this tyrannical country. Viva Il Papa. I have tried to smuggle a note to him through one of his bodyguards though I would not be able to ascertain that it will even reach him. In my letter, I have tried to explain that since the economic atom bomb had exploded years ago, ramifications beyond the ken of any normal man have far expanded. Blah. Blah. Blah. I wonder if my politically loaded monograph will make sense to him. It had to. The Pope grew up in a place where tyranny was the norm. But I can't say for certain that he would even read my letter. Anyways, I can only regard this sort of thing as another chapter in my continuing education of politics and human depravity. I got to go, mom. I can hear the sounds of revving engine from the outside. That has got to be the truck of the same military thugs who roam the streets every week. Hence, it is lights out in a few minutes. So, I'll say goodnight and sign off.

Love,

Wang

Three Pictures of a Copper Beech II

These portraits of plants, have been made for many different reasons but always for the JOY of it. All of my photographs are daytime, made in city parks and gardens and virtually straight out of the camera with the absolute minimum of post processing.

This on going photographic odyssey that I call TERRA INCOGNITA has helped me notice what is always present in my life

Joaquin: I really don't need to work but my father wants me to learn the value of good labor.

Juzno: What does your father do?

Joaquin: He sells Italian Leather.

The great Magnum photographer Elliot Erwitt once said that it is better to shoot an iconic picture rather than a good but boring one. I certainly would not call this image iconic – although in a few years maybe it will – only time will tell. A boring picture? But that is subjective.

I am almost sure that Pete would not like this photo. But that would be his own opinion. In any case, it doesn't matter to me. Because I like it.

I was pleasantly surprised by the result. I thought that the lighting was bad as it was mostly florescent predominantly coming from the top but I think the warm backlighting helped. The classic Nikkor 50mm from my Rose's vintage Nikon FE may have contributed to the wow factor. Despite using a crappy 8 mp Canon Rebel XT, the combination of the lens and the camera as appointed by providence all contributed to this shot.

Addendum:

I used an old Nikkor 50mm lens (truly a great glass on this one - that's why I used it) which was designed for the film SLR. So everything is operated manually including the focus. Without the benefit of the auto focus and split screen I just eyeballed the shot and went for broke. Since this was a stolen shot and the environment was a bit dark, it made shooting more difficult. So yea I wished I had focused on the eyes but focusing on the wrinkles is the next best thing :-)

I also liked the colors on this one. It's not often that I render my portraits in color as I'm partially color blind but I think this one works for me. I did render the image in B&W but this version is my fave.

Through art we can know another's view of the universe. - Marcel Proust, Maxims

People enjoying the Lanzada Beach, Pontevedra, Spain.

This doesn't really have a witty story behind it. But I like the picture. It kind of reminds me of Martin Parr's style - satirically journalistic anthropologistic images of aspects of everyday ordinary life of retrospective social England. Except this was shot at Lanzada Beach, a tourist site in Galicia off a few miles away from Santiago de Compostela. Quite frankly, I find Parr's images quite boring. Does it mean that I find my image equally boring? At this point, I don't really have much of an opinion. Maybe deep inside I think it is because I have procrastinated sharing it. I see the fat lady with too much sunscreen cream on her back, the hot chick beside her - applying some faux cream on her arms, the lazy people in the background - they look like miniature toys. The whole thing looks surreal. That's because I really want it to. What else can it be? Unexceptional for sure. Ordinary. Maybe if I included the topless woman sitting next to a man at the lower left hand corner of the photo. Oh but I have to blur out the topless lady because my art is rated PG. She is there though - I can assure you. In fact, there were some more topless women at the beach so it was a challenge not to include them in my frame.

The Scent of Pepper & Seawater

The Brownie Target Six-16 was introduced in 1946 and was discontinued fifteen years later. It was originally priced at $4. Nowadays, one could get an acceptably functional one between $30 to $80. I say "acceptably functional" because one could never really get a shot that would be comparable even to today's cheapest camera available. I'm not sure where I got mine. I'm sure somebody must have given it to me. I have a few more Brownies, which kind people gave to me and which I also plan to pay tribute to later on. I have not much use for them. The camera uses a film size 616, which is almost impossible to get hold of as Kodak discontinued its manufacture in 1984. Maybe Kodak thought that 1984 would turn the States into the dystopian era similar to George Orwell's 1984 novel.

Although the Brownie is in a different era as Alfred Eisenstaedt's photo of Children at the Puppet Theater (shot in 1963), the nostalgic feel of the photo and of that of the camera go well together in my opinion. I must be post-modern. Because I don't have much regard to historical accuracy when it suits me. Eisenstaedt's photo captures the children's excitement as they watched a puppet show. The Brownie captures the same excitement for amateur photographers who could take pictures without pawning the family heirloom.

I love it that the little girl is leaning towards the camera and looking at Eisenstaedt. Everyone else is engrossed at the puppet show. Come to think of it, the image reminds me of Orwell's 1984 for some reason.

Gerard ten Broek, visual Artist.

Gerard was vandaag weer druk bezig op de zandmotor. Maar ik kwam voor het resultaat waar hij gisteren op de Zandmotor waar hij gisteren druk mee bezig was. Misschien moet ik morgen weer even gaan kijken.

Yea, I know the song has nothing to do with the image but I hear the music in my head whenever I think about it. Maybe it was playing somewhere when I was there. All I remember was getting excited chasing this shoot. So excited that my hands shook as I pressed the shutter release. Damn that long black I just had. With all the jagged light and blurs, I think I just created art.

The iconic photo behind the two cameras was shot by Bill Beall as he chanced upon Officer Maurice Cullinane gently coaxing two-year old Allen Weaver back to the Curb. The photo won a Pulitzer award. And how could it not? Entitled Busted, the photo is a classic street shot. Unsuspecting protagonists caught at the decisive moment by the photographer.

I decided to use Beall's photo as a background for my Mamiya-6 as the camera came out about the same time as when Beall took his photo. Around late 1950s. The Mamiya-6 (note the hyphen) is different from the more famous plastic-bodied Mamiya Six, which came out in the 1990s. The former is a classic folding camera, which has long been forgotten. The latter is still used around. Actually the Mamiya-6 series debuted in the 1940s. My Mamiya-6 is the last version.

It is curious why Mamiya decided to resurrect the model name fifty years later. Perhaps, a period of fifty years is too long for one to remember the classic folding camera. I'm glad I have one. In my fantasy, I dream of having two. Thanks to the magic of Photoshop. Besides, one cannot have too many cameras, right?
