If you are a person who likes to be the center of attention, I have two suggestions when getting photographed: (1) do not pose with a young child, and (2) do not pose with a cute dog. I guarantee that either of these two will blow you off and steal your show. Hence I may be making a big mistake in composing the picture above.

Nina Leen shot this fawn-and-white whippet in 1964. The dog became a superstar in Great Britain. To my eyes, the photo has that classic portrait feel that I thought would be a cool background for my classic Mamiya-6. Initially the vertical photo above was going to be my tribute to the Mamiya-6 but I ended using Bill Beall's Busted as a background photo just because it looked better on screen. www.flickr.com/photos/juznobsrvr/16039560356/

In doing Icons behind the Lens series, I realized that the horizontal or landscape format worked better when displayed on the screen of a computer. My dilemma is that horizontal formats do not work well in books as opposed to vertical or portrait format. I'm still trying to figure out a way for the audience to appreciate looking at photos in both a book form and the web. Sometimes, the square format is the compromising solution. But this would mean cropping the picture since I'm using an SLR with a 2x3 format. I think that would be a waste of pixels.

Shades of Brown in Berlin Blues

Best half a dollar I ever spent today. Yea, today... I'm wondering what it was that got me through. The phone hasn't rung for a long time now. When is she going to call? Forget it. Who am I fooling? It's been a week. No, it's longer than that. I could use another drink.

Just before Russell made his way back to the Cecil Hotel, he double checked his note to make sure he'd crossed his t's and dotted his i's. It was then he'd notice there were no t's or i's in "goodbye cruel world." He replaced the note with a ticket and returned to the Cecil. To this day he sits near the dusty black dial phone and awaits her call.

Folklore?

Think of it. What would your definition be? Jean-François offers an interesting one.

Here’s how I met him.

After the first show I saw at the Mémoire and racines festival, I noted some people I crossed around the grounds were wearing black caps with the word Folklore embroidered in white. I was a bit perplexed – was this some branded souvenir of the festival?

After I had lunch, I brought my tray to the recycling station. There was a young woman stationed behind the bins explaining the procedures. The festival goes a lot long way to be green: virtually everything on my tray went into the compost bin including the plates and cutlery that was made of biodegradable cereal based material. She happened to have one of these caps on her head. I noticed there was a number written above Folklore and asked her what the concept was. She pointed to a table being me and said “Go see Jean-François, the man with the small suitcase. He’ll tell you all about them and can sell you one too.”

Jean-François told me that all he initially wanted to do was find a cool cap. He looked around but could not resolve to buy one simply because he liked the logo or the color if he knew nothing about the brand. He decided to have one made to his liking. Being at once a set caller, a dancer and a visual artist, he thought the word folklore needed a boost more badly than the word art as it is often used in a depreciative way today. I checked in some on-line dictionaries and always found both negative and objective descriptions. This one’s from Merriam-Webster: “An often unsupported notion, story, or saying that is widely circulated”.

His personal description is that Folklore is a name for “The science of the people”. It is not tied to a single culture and is alive and evolving. This conception of the phenomenon is reflected in both is set calling and visual art practices.

When he showed-up with his new headgear at the festival a couple of years ago, he was immediately asked, the same way I did, what the caps stood for. People wanted to wear them once they had heard his explanation. He initially simply sold them at the same cost he had paid for his first one but has since managed to get some quantity discounts. He now sells them in 4 models. Each is individually numbered. He currently has about 800 sold and is well known at the festival as a performer and as the man with the Folklore caps.

I bought one too in appreciation of his efforts to promote folk culture. I then shot his portrait in the middle of the grounds with the tent named “Danse danse” in the background. It houses the workshops and the traditional dance evenings.

I’m sure Jean-François must have spent a lot more time promoting his notion of living heritage over the week-end.

If you can handle a bit of French, go to his caller web site. If you click “documentaire” you’ll hear him explain he wanted to do break dancing when he was young but now would not change place with Céline Dion when he’s on a traditional music stage. calleur.ca/

Folklore?

Pensez-y.

Nuestra Señora de La Paz is the seat of government of Bolivia, as well as the departmental capital of the La Paz Department, nicknamed the city that touches the clouds, is one of the highest cities on earth and home to some of the most beautiful skies i have seen.
